Canadians, still waiting for Xtrain/Calendars?

Hi Mishel - I think that whether you pay duty or not, is completely random. When parcels come into the country, there aren't enough staff to examine every parcel so they look at some percentage of them, and if duty hasn't already been paid, it's charged. If they don't happen to select your parcel, you don't pay.

I didn't have to pay duty on my calendar this year, but I did last year.

And I got a notice to pick up a parcel at the post office ... hoping it is my XTrain! There wasn't any duty amount listed on the notice, but I figure I must have to pay, otherwise they would have just left the parcel at the door.

P.S. Thank you CeciFifi! That is nice that you got yours so quickly. I hope that in a few hours I have mine as well. :)

Well, the good news is ... I got my XTrain today! Yeahhhhh!!!!

The bad news is the duty. $41.75!! That stinks! I am not sure if this figured into the calculation, but the description on the sticker from Cathe's team said the contents were "merchandise" and Canada Customs in all their wisdom interpreted this as "Clothing, women's".

Shouldn't there be no duty because it's made in the USA (with the free trade agreement)???:confused: I've always wondered about that.

The charges do seem to be random.

I was charged 5% GST which is not exempt an exemption under the NA free trade act. I can't remember what the outside of the box said. The box wasn't opened. Maybe to charge they should have to open the box to verify what is in it???
What value was identified on the customs form that they got $40 assessment? Did they charge HST instead?

Forget what I posted above. Even though the customs form says GST they must have charged me HST to charge me $ 15 plus $ 10 handling.

The approximate numbers were Duty $16, $13 HST and $13 Handling. They didn't open my box either ... I would have been much more comfortable if they had, and had based the charges on the actual product! Wish I knew what "handling" was - right now I am pretty sure it involves 10 minutes preparing a form and stashing the box in their warehouse for 4 weeks. Robbery, I tell ya!
