Can someone explain twitter to me?

Okay, I am probably the only person on the planet who doesn't get it. What is the purpose of twitter? I thought it was just a cute little way for us to see what Cathe is up to, but the past couple of days there are additional posts, that don't seem to follow any logical pattern. Who are these people and why should I care what they are doing (which to me seems totally unrelated to anything Cathe/Forum/etc.)

Can you please explain to me what I am missing?

Thanks a bunch.

If I weren't so indifferent to the world of Twitter that I hardly know how to spell it, let alone participate in it, I'd be lost too. A LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTLE too much chatter going on the world, IMHO.

(p.s. I also don't do Facespace or Mybook or Lincolned-In or whatever the H is going on in the blogosphere these day) (s)

Same for me . I enjoyed seeing what Cathe was up to.....but now there are additional posts, that I was assuming were to Cathe....but I have no idea who they are or what they are talking about .....? It's very confusing .

I asked my teenaged daughter who understands most of all that stuff and she isn't sure either !!! So I don't feel quite as bad anymore.:D

At least we're not alone.......................;)

I just read an article in our local newspaper that prominent people (celebrities, politicians) actually hire "Twitter Ghostwriters", rather than spend their every waking moment doing the actual "tweeting". (I can't believe that verb has been "repurposed" in this way!) Makes ya wonder . . .

Twitter Settings

I am far from an expert, but I can help with this! I signed up but have not started posting yet. I noticed that Cathe added people to her list of friends this weekend and started responding instead of simply posting updates about herself. When you see @ in front of a name, that is Cathe’s response to a Twitter member. You only see what that person wrote originally if you are a follower of that person. If you only want to see what Cathe is writing about herself and do not want to read her responses to anyone else, go to:

http://twitter.com/account/notifications

change @ replies to show me no @ replies

Your account will go back to the way it was last week before Cathe started responding to people. You will only see her personal updates and not her conversations with other Twitter members. I hope this helps!

Blessings,
Heather B.

I just signed up for Twitter, and I actually like it better than Facebook. People are constantly talking - you can do a search on practically anything, like what you're watching or what workout you're doing or what you had for lunch, etc. and find a bunch of people talking about it. I was searching on all sorts of topics last night :) Cathe said good morning to me today, I thought that was so cool! There's also a food diary add-on, TweetWhatYouEat.

I'm clueless and am considering remaining so. I'm sure it's fun, but with 3 email accounts, this forum, a yahoo groups list serve, and that dreaded Facebook my friends lured me to, I do NOT want one more thing to follow. :p

I have a hard enough time keeping up [mostly lurking] in the forums. I think I'd have to add another 3 hours on per day to post a lot & keep up with everything in the forums. So,.....I wonder how anyone can participate on various forums, be on facebook, twitter, myspace and whatever else is out there, and have time to take care of their families and work at their full-time or part-time job!:confused:Oh, yeah, and workout, too!:D

I think there are not enough hours in a day to do all that(and learn what all that is all about)!! Hmmm, or maybe I am just not organized and fast enough to do all that! I can't keep up with y'all!

Hilarious

From Urban Dictionary:

FACEBOOK-EMON:
The term used for the collection of people, on your Facebook friends list, that you don’t actually talk to or know in real life. Related to popular tv program and game pokeamon, where the aim is to collect as many diffrent Pocket Monsters as possible.

This thread reminded me of that definition :) I used to wonder if I was just too slow too keep up with all the social networking jazz but, no offense intended, for me it would just be over-stimulation. With fb, reg email, various forum memberships, work, working out and the rest of life to consider I agree it's hard to participate in everything.

I'm glad I'm not alone. I have a Twitter account, but really don't know how to use it, or what it's for. :D

I must admit, I was wondering the same thing!!!!

How does anyone get anything done??? I have 2 little boys, so between school, dinner, cleaning, driving etc etc etc etc. There is NO way I could ever keep up. I actually got yelled at on Facebook because I wasn't responding!!! But I never go there so I didn't even know until 3 weeks later!!

I am happy here with my Cathe friends and I just can't imagine spending that much time on different places!!!

actually i like twitter for that reason. i quick little blurb(you can only type so many characters in your message)to say whats up and move on. my step dad keeps bugging me about facebook but i don't need ONE more social site that i never go to LOL. i already have a fitness blog i have a hard time keeping up everyday i rarely ever use myspace b/c my profile is private(so i don't get hassled) and that is mostly to keep in touch with my cousins many whom are overseas or out of the state. i have the message boards but i scan through messages to only things that may be of interest so i am lucky to be on the puter 20-30 min at a time.

i follow my local news so when i go on twitter i will get a direct link to a story of course when cathe has something to say, i twitter with other friends whom are busy just like myself. we share some links over there etc without having to write long messages.

On the point @ keeping up w/social networking, etc. ...... many folks are using Blackberry and iPhone mobile devices that have Facebook, Twitter & MySpace apps. With these apps, it's easy to keep up even when you're on the go. ;)
