Can someone explain twitter to me?

That makes sense. I can see something like iPhone making it way easier. (I originally typed "the IPhone" ~ I don't know why, but that sounded really funny to me. Like something my 82 y/o dad would say. I'm getting old!!! :D )

I agree about the overstimulation though! FB has become a bit of the pain in the butt for me. I love how so many of my friends check in there and constantly type updates regarding what they're doing (laundry, watching TV, blowing their nose) or how they're feeling (happy, ticked at the boss, frustrated because they can't figure out FB). I barely have time to respond to messages. And yet here I am on Cathe.com, with laundry and schoolwork waiting for me.

I must admit, I have reconnected with some great people. :)

Understanding Twitter

A good explanation of Twitter can be found by watching the video located on their home page - http://www.twitter.com
Just click the 'Watch a Video' link located at the top right.

Most people find Twitter very useful when they incorporate third-party software to help them manage the information. For instance, lets say I'm writing an email or surfing Shop Cathe ;) . Instead of stopping what I'm doing to see what Cathe (or my friends) are up to, a tiny notification just popped up on my screen updating me on their status. I can instantly interact with them If I want or just continue with what I'm doing. Cathe saw this as an opportunity to quickly connect with people in a more relaxed/personal way.

Many people don't always have the time to log into Facebook, check their email, or open all the Blogs they watch. Twitter lets users get the 'quick snapshot' from those people/websites/companies they choose to follow without all the hassle or interruption.

Also, as stated by another member, many people take advantage of mobile software that is compatible with Twitter. Now they can update or get friend updates on the go.

Okay, I am probably the only person on the planet who doesn't get it. What is the purpose of twitter?
I don't get it either, at least the way some people use it (the "this is what I'm doing now!" kinds of posts, that I don't see the interest in, unless you are a stalker of the person ).

It just seems like another instance of "'talking' a lot, but not saying anything" that has become rampant since cell phones came into widespread use.

Now, Jane Fonda has some interesting Twitter posts (links to videos on her latest play, etc). And not just "I'm going out to eat now: feel like having a bagel!"

There are a lot of tedious posts to Twitter, but you don't have to "follow" those people (subscribe to their feeds). The beauty of twitter is you can follow only the people that you find interesting.

I use it primarily for work (http://twitter.com/hcdelp) so you can see that I post interesting articles in my industry, respond to people who have questions about our product/industry and sometimes just chat with people.

I also subscribe to the feeds of kettlebell/fitness experts and find really great info.

It is a bit confusing at first, but once you use it for a few days, you'll get the hang of it (like clicking "in reply to" to figure out what the beginning of a conversation was).

You can also choose to just subscribe to/follow others and not post at all yourself if you like.

Thanks for all the replies (including SNM), but I think my life is too complicated already -- what with a cell phone that automatically takes pictures of the inside of my purse, 4 remote controls to watch one tv, a coffee maker with an automatic timer that can't seem to know that I really mean a.m. when I set it for p.m. and now I'm supposed to twitter. Yikes:confused:

I admire all of you who are of this century.

Thanks again,
Debbie Russo
