Bringing up Boys--Dr. James Dobson

Sabrina,

I have this book, but have not finished it. I started it when I was pregnant with my son over 3 years ago. After he was born, I didn't have time to read, so it is still waiting for me to pick it back up again. Someday soon, I will actually finish it.

What I did read of it was very good. I like James Dobson and have recently read "Dare to Discipline." It gave me a lot of insight that helped me with some issues that I was havign with my 3 yr old.

Please understand that Dr. Dobson is a Christian conservative and this influences much of what he recommends. If this conflicts with your political or religious views, you may not like his advice.

I haven't read the book, but I do like Dr. James Dobson a lot. I used to listen to his radio show everyday when it was on (in may area). I have a son, I should probably get this book too.

I haven't read that book but just wanted to suggest a really good book that I read when my children were small. "How To Talk So Kids Will Listen, How To Listen So Kids Will Talk." I can't remember the author. I thought it was a great book and helped me a lot.

I have 3 sons also and have the book and did start it. But I found it hard to read and hard to keep my attention. So I never finished it. Honestly though the man only has 1 son, so I question his ability to tell "me" anything I don't already know from raising 3 and just listening to others in general. I wasn't all that impressed with what I did read. Sorry can't be of more help.

How old are your sons? Mine are 12, 10 and 8.

Annette--My boys are 10,8 and 3.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I will have to see if I can find that book Joanne thanks.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I helped me understand how boys are wired and why my son is different from my daughter. I definately reccomend this book! It offers alot of insight!

I really like it. I loaned it to a friend with 2 boys and she read it, returned it and said she was going to buy it because it is the type of book she would need to keep to make reference to from time to time. You could get it out of the library and then buy it if you like it.

I like "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen,..." too. The authors are Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Another good one is "Setting Limits" by Robert J. Mac Kenzie, Ed.D.

I'm not a big fan of Dobson's politics.

Michael Gurian's books are very good too! For younger boys, try The Good Son. He's written several, targeted to different ages and issues, but I don't recall their titles. A search under author would pull them up. It'd be worth your time IMHO!

Haven't read Dobson but Gurian knows his stuff. I've been a Scout leader for 10 years now and Gurian has great advice.

TONS of good information, and my only regret is that this book didn't come out sooner. It is great! I still enjoyed the book, and benefited from it even though I got it when my boys were a bit older.
