Body Composition Scan

Has anyone had a DXA, or DEXA, Body Composition Scan done?

If so, did you feel the results were accurate, and was the information provided by the technician relevant to your fitness goals?

I am considering having a scan done by this company:

Have any NorCal Cathletes used this company, or heard anything about them?

I've had a DEXA scan as a baseliine for checking for osteopenir/osteoporosis, but at the time, I never thought of getting the other results (like fat composition) and was never provided with the info.

My scan was totally paid for by my insurance (which pays for preventive and diagnostic tests). Could you get your doctor to sign off on a baseline body composition scan, and then ask to the get other results as well?

Just a thought!

Wow! I checked out the site! Only $49? Really? If I had known I could get accurate body composition testing done that cheap, I would have done last year when I started my journey!

I hope this works out for you!

A dear friend of mine had these done regularly during her prep to get a competition level body... she was pleased with them, and they were accurate with the body fat composition measurements.

Janis, I LOVE your new avatar! I want to see a larger version!

:D okey dokey artichokey.

Hey! Don't you think a body composition scan is a GREAT idea! I can find out, accurately, how much lean body mass and fat I really have! And what kind of lies the scale has been telling me, and I can confirm or refute the accuracy of the stupid calipers.

Tricia is right, it's ONLY $49. My co-pay is $30 anyway, I figure I'll go right to the source. (Hi Tricia! :))

Excellent! Yes, this helps very much, just what I wanted/needed to hear. Thanks.

Yeah, baby! But if they tell you the calipers are right and you actually are as lean as they say you are, then what will you do, hmmmmm??????

I'll keep lifting, keep running, keep doing Shock Cardio and Insanity, and quit bitching about the goddamn scale!

I feel inspired to change my avatar too!

Pretty - love the black, metal, green....

Is it me, or do they look like artsy Chinese take-out food containers? or an Architectural installation of some kind? or???

Maybe I need a magnifying glass!

LOL- it's a photo I took of the underside of a bridge between Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York. Here are some other photos I took then: http://www.thecathenation.com/forum/album.php?albumid=642

Hi Janis!

I thought that was you! How have you been? You look fantastic BTW!

I will be hunting me down someplace around here to have one of those scans done as well! My scale jumps between 35% to 25% BF. I have no idea what mine really is! I know it's still pretty high, but I doubt it can be anywhere near 35%!!!

Hello Morningstar!

Guess I need a new Avatar as well It'll take me a while, though! I have to really find something I like or that's truly me!

Hi Tricia,

Thanks :):)

I have been really busy, but very well. Life is good. :D

I'll let you know how it goes with the DXA scan.

You could use the photo from in front of Chateau Montelena for a new Avatar, the one that highlights that luscious halter top more. :D

Congrats on your weight loss! I noticed your ticker.:)

Thanks Janis!

Hard work really does pay off!

Thanks for the idea for a new avatar! I hadn't thought of that one! I do love the setting! It's so beautiful on their vineyard!

Wow, now I'm intrigued--this is pretty close to where I am, and for that price, I may just take advantage! It costs me that much with my HMO to get a body fat percentage test done, and that wasn't isn't super accurate...

I had my appointment yesterday. The location is right off 1-80, southwest of Whipple and El Camino Real. If you go, and are coming from 280 - I'd exit at Edgewood or Farm Hill Rd. (I went to Woodside  and had to double back. 280 is so much less congested than 1-80, prettier drive too.)

The scan, itself, took very little time. I was instructed to not wear any wire or metal of any kind, so I wore a sports bra - no clasps, eye-hooks, adjustment bars, under wires etc.. and I wore a pair of yoga pants. No jewelry.

It is the same sort of DEXA scan you would receive for a bone density test, but since I did not have a doctors order for the scan, the technician only gave me the printed report for body composition, however I do have a "BMC" (bone mineral content) figure in grams that tells me what my bones weigh.

The report breaks down each limb, trunk, android (stomach, abdomen), gynoid (pelvic, glute), then gives a total, which is an average of all parts and pieces.

The report also gave me lean body mass. Finally - there is a separate percentage given for fat that is more than essential fat - it is inaccessible fat that is paramount for life, i.e. the fat found in bone marrow.

I am glad I had the scan done, despite the long drive, this information gives me a road map, guidance, really, of where I should go and what I should put my attention on.

And that is: eating clean, making food choices that will fuel my workouts and that will feed my muscles for repair and recovery. Plus an occasional treat to keep life interesting and make meals fun. My goals are shifting away from a figure to achieve on the scale and towards keeping my muscle and strength gains, and living a long, strong, flexible, agile and athletic life.

One other thing - the calipers - the pinch tests were pretty darn accurate. I was surprised at how accurate they are. But the calipers alone didn't tell me what I needed to hear - which was IGNORE the scale and go by measurements, how clothes fit, how I feel, and keeping an eye on over all health. The scale is an excellent feedback tool - but I was becoming a slave to it and needed more comprehensive information.

The DEXA scan was only $49. Pretty cheap for focus, direction, feedback, and affirmation.

:D
