Big Dog Suggestions?

i was going to suggest a dane!:eek::p:p

we have our second and think they are the best breed ever!
but if youve had one you know that:D
youre right on the whippy tail....one downside to a gd, for sure! i cant tell you how many times one of our dds has gotten smacked in the face!:eek:

a mastiff was our 2nd choice....oh, those faces!!!!!:D

good luck w/ your decision

Of course, I was going to go there too. Since it's already been done I will only BEG you to adopt and not purchase. There are so many in shelters and rescues now and it's going to get worse as summer gets closer. Check Petfinder - shelters and rescues get puppies too. Also, big black dogs are always the absolute last to get adopted.

hey jeanine! love your pic!
thats so sad abt big black dogs!
both annie & mufasa are all black w/ some white on the chest. yes, i suppose they look pretty intimidating....but thats the point!;):D

Cynthia, I didn't mean to ignore you. Yes, they will drool but it is usually after eating, drinking and vigorous exercise. They don't sit around and drool all day long. ;) I like my big guys to drink outside because they do like to sling after they drink. Keeping a towel near indoor water is a great idea. :D

My pup is the sweetest dog though. He is probably 90-100 lbs at 6 months. I haven't weighed him in the last few weeks. He's much more laid back than my first mastiff was at this age.

That would be Thor, he was the first foster I fell hard for. He is now reunited with my Dane girl, Xena, at the bridge. I tell you, the long tails are nothing, it's the short life span that kills me.

i can second that for danes! oh my word, do they make an awful mess!!!!

he's very sweet!
annie only made it to 4 and had to be put down:(
mufasa is 2 and very much a puppy still. clumsy goofball!:D

Have you checked Petfinder.com? You can search shelters in your area for dogs by size, breed, age, etc and see a little picture and a bio for each available pet. Maybe you could find a "couture" dog whose personality and size are just right!

Oops!

Sorry, didn't see that someone already suggested this! Anyway, it's a great site and there are probably thousands of dogs in your area who would love to be your doggie. It's great that you're looking for a larger dog, too, since they so rarely make it out of shelters!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the direction to Petfinder.com!!!! I had located the Mastiff rescue shelter in the town next door, but by going to Petfinder I am amazed at just how many dogs there are out there that need a home. Now I'm REALLY excited :)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions :)

So I'm taking my kids to Michigan to visit my family in July. It's been 10 years since I've been to Michigan (which means my youngest son has never been since he's getting ready to turn 10), so I'm really excited.

When we get back from Michigan we are going to get a puppy. The boys have been wanting a dog, and so have I for quite some time now. We are moving into a rental house and the landlady, who is absolutely fabulous, told me we could get a dog, any size dog if I paid a rather high deposit -- which I gladly did because out of the many places my boys and I looked at to rent, many said we could have a dog with a $200 deposit, but it had to be less than 25 lbs.

I have nothing against 25 pound dogs, but I grew up with Great Danes and my husband and I had a Rottweiler before we had kids, so I'm a big dog kind of girl.

I am leaning very heavily toward a male Mastiff, but I'm wondering what other dogs you think I might consider. My requirements are that they be big, great with children and big loves with a loud bark ;) Short hair, long hair, doesn't really matter to me. I'm not going to get a Great Dane because one thing I don't want is a big long whippy tail :) And no Rotts because it would be impossible for me to replace in my heart our first Rott who passed away.

But anything else I am open to consider ;)

Thanks!

Travis

I have had big dogs, too! Ones with good dispositions and love of children:

Golden Retriever
Labrador Retriever (I had 2 of these and they were wonderful, easy to train, and very anxious to please!)

I love your idea of a Mastiff! I think they are beautiful and great dogs with great character!

Thanks!

I was under the impression they drooled all day (like the dog in Turner &Hooch with shoe string slobber hanging).
Maybe we should see a full grown mastiff in person. ;)Oh my, that may send my husband over the top! We both think they are beautiful dogs:)

I wanted to add this....
A brother and sister mastiff in rescue.

I wish I had room to add these 2 to our home! OMG, they are so beautiful!
