Anyone here over 40?

Hi - I'm new to this board. I started working with Cathe videos a few months ago and I love the results I'm seeing! I do have some challenges to overcome. I would like to reduce my body fat percentage and I keep working at it, but I wonder if I'll be able to reach my goal. I'm 44 years old and peri-menopausal. I'm fighting the belly fat tooth and nail. Cathe's workouts have been a huge help but I'm still not where I want to be.

Anyone have any tips?

Thanks,
Julia

I'm 47, and was 45 when I joined WW, started using Cathe, and lost 60 pounds. To be fair, I've worked out off and on for years, but never consistently for this long until I found Cathe! YES, you CAN reach your goals!! Just make sure they're realistic and attainable.

Hi Julia,

Welcome to the Cathe House! Yes, I'm over 40. I decline to mention my age again, I had to do it a week ago on another thread & I'm still reeling! LOL

Seriously, these are what have helped me: clean eating, at least 90% of the time. Low sodium, no gum. No sodas. High fiber & lots of water.

Working out, the only thing which has REALLY helped is running. I'm reluctant to say that because I hate running, but it's true. I will say that intense cardio, such as Interval Max 1 & 2 helps some too.

I'm sure there will be others with their perspective on this. Love your name!

Ruth:)
Edited to say, I'm only talking about the belly fat thing here.

Does being almost 40 count? (I'll be 40 next July). I believe that you can reach your goals, but not through exercise alone. Eating well (as often as possible) is a big key. For me, if I eat very clean for a few days, I completely lose my "belly bulge". Now, if only clean eating would help reduce those pesky tricep-area "bat wings" (as one of our favorite posters refered to them)!

Good Luck,
Shelbygirl

I'm 43. Am addicted to Cathe cardio intensity. Always buy all her offerings on the first day of presale, and steal many of her weight lifts for my own routine. Eat like a horse - but a semi-clean horse. Have entered perimenopause myself, and hard core exercise is going to pull me through it.

Welcome to the FortySomething Cathe Squad!

Sure am, just turned 45 yesterday been doing cathe workouts a yr and a half........... Rhonda:7

Okay, now I'm really depressed. I've hijacked a thread I don't belong on. ~sigh~

IS THERE NO FIFTYSOMETHING CATHE SQUAD! Anyone???;(

No gum?:( Why no gum? I quit smoking last January and now have a serious sugar free gum habit, but I didn't think it was doing any harm. Can you elaborate? Thanks, Julia

Hi Julia,

I don't imagine it makes any big difference in the long run...it doesn't really affect the fat. I was told that chewing gum causes you to swallow a lot of air which makes your belly look more puffy. I love gum, but stopped it & it did make SOME difference, but now I have at least a piece or two in a week.

Also, I was told that chewing sugar free gum may help the teeth, but they body perceives it as simply another kind of sugar & reacts accordingly. I don't know if that's true or not.

I don't think the whole gum thing makes enough difference to worry about it.

Forgot to mention though...no (or very limited) alcohol. ~sigh~:+

Ruth:)

Edited to say...CONGRATULATIONS on quitting smoking!!!!! I did it myself, so I know what you had to go through. Compared to that, what's a little gum?

I suspect that's true about the sugar reaction. I don't know about the rest. I do think that my body reacts to sugar alcohols just as if I was eating real sugar, so I strictly limit SF candy. I probably need to at least cut back on the gum. Thanks again. Julia

I'll be 45 in 2 mos. and I still can't believe I turned 40! I work out more and more consistently than I did in my 30s and feel better because of it. :)

Just turned 40 this year, about a month after Cathe did. I can't tell you how motivating it is to see someone our age looking as awesome as Cathe does! Definitely takes the sting out of getting older--at least a little! ;-)

Seriously, working out with Cathe has gotten me in the best shape of my life, and I started working out as a teenager. Running's great for pure fat loss, too, but Cathe's just the best for your all-around fitness. I even find running much easier than I used to thanks to workouts like IMax2 and KP&C. For some reason those kick my cardiovascular butt, and make everything else seem easy in comparison!

Welcome--you're going to love getting fitter and stronger with Cathe!

-Marie :)

I am 40 and a half, and I have found through a low carb diet and Cathe that the stomach pooch is losing its battle with me. Even if you don't choose to stay on a low carb way of eating, just doing it for 2 weeks will reduce your stomach tremendously. I have been doing Cathe for almost 3 years now I do believe. You can do this!!:D

I am 45  Have been working out with Cathe for about 10 years! Oh my! How time flies! Can't imagine what I would feel like if I had not discovered working out with her!

Hi, Julia!
I'm 47, and find I NEED to work out and eat well to stave off that middle-aged belly fat. If you started just "a few months ago," give it more time and focus on the good results you've been seeing to keep your motivation up. Getting where you want to be is an on-going process (sometimes it feels like the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland: you have to run as fast as you can to stay in one place, and even faster to get anywhere!), but just be consistant, and watch what you eat (I could eat a lot of things in my 20's that I couldn't get away with these days!).

I already eat low carb, but with lots of fruits and veggies. I lost over 50 lbs. and have kept it off for about a year. I do believe in low carb eating.

So true Kathryn. I was still eating like I was 20 when I turned 43 and realized that I had gained 50 lbs.! I'm one of those people who never worked out or dieted and was never overweight. I admit I was a couch potato - didn't even enjoy gym class in high school! Now I realize all the benefits of exercise - so much more than just weight loss. Wish I had started sooner:(

I am 52. I have been working out for 20+ years. Exercise and diet are the key. Smaller more frequent meals are key for me. I always had a tendency to sit down with a box of cereal and carton of milk and eat half the box. It worked alright when I was young, but now I can't do that. Eating fairly clean is important. Also sugar alcohols are known for causeing bloating. I try to avoid them but do use splenda.
