Anyone Else Looking For Work?

Have you tried your local gas station/ convenience stores? It may not be what you're looking for, but at least it may get your foot in the door. You could also work as a nurse's assistant, but you'd have to be willing to take the nights and weekends, hours that noone really wants to work. Also waitressing, it probably wouldn't pay much, but you'd probably make some good tips. It is tough. It took me a long time and I was about to just throw in the towel when I finally got called for an interview and now am working a part time job. At least it is some sort of an income. I'm lucky that my husband had a reliable job, even though we still live pay check to pay check as many do. Best of luck!

I don't know how you feel about pushing alcohol but when I got a large paycut, I needed a PT job to make up for the difference. I'm a "consumer educator:" basically I go to liquor stores and give out free samples & info about the distributor's products. Attire is business casual, so you're not wearing anything skanky, it's decent pay (my agency pays $25/hr), and you get to make your own schedule pretty much. Weekends are a given but the latest you'd work is until the stores close if you got a late shift. I know a lot of states have this sort of job, and it's not bad for now!

Vee, you are so sweet. I'd really love to be a one-on-one trainer but it costs money and takes time to get certified. I have neither right now. But that would be my ultimate dream if I could do whatever I wanted. But you peaked my interest now, so I may look into it a bit further. Only thing is - where I live there really isn't much interest in fitness. Sad but true. But you never know unless you try, right?

Debbie, your talent and interest in helping and inspiring others in fitness shines through even over a web forum. If you pursue your dream, unless your area truly has people who are uncharacteristically disinclined to fitness, I place my bets that you will do great. You have such great rotation ideas that I'd love to see you in a magazine with a regular column with pictures featuring yourself for exercise routines. I'd subscribe to that magazine for sure.

FitnessFreak, I agree with Vee: you would be an excellent trainer!!! You could still look for work and train on the side. You never know, your area could be an untapped market for fitness! It never hurts to try :)

Thanks Melissa!
I will put some thoughts in this. I guess you're right, if I can get my name out there maybe I could succeed with it. What I'd really love to do is make workout videos. I have so many ideas on differenty types of strategies and such. I just don't have the money to produce it. That takes some major bucks. But I think it would be awesome if I could put out some weight training workout videos.

Vee, I had a fitness column in the newpaper I worked for (small town paper) but our H&F advertisers slowly dropped off the face of the earth. It was fun to do. I'd love to write for Oxygen! Thanks for your confidence in me, you make me smile! :)

Debbie, Did you get a reply from the email you sent? Keep us posted! I totally agree Vee that you would make an excellent Personal Trainer :)

BTW I got a call today for an interview tomorrow. I would appreciate all the good vibes you gals could send me :) This is with a good company.

Oh and I forget who said to try gas stations etc. I have put in applications there but never hear back. I even do follow up calls. I feel like I am begging for an 8 dollar an hour job!

I haven't read anyone's reply but wanted to respond to your post. I truly understand how you feel. I'm currently a temp and they are thankfully keeping me on a week by week basis with no end in site for my work (but was laid off for the summer). But I am still looking for a permanent job and there really are none to be found in my area and I am not willing or able to move.

To give you an idea of what it's like out here, a few months back, the company I temp at held a job fair for about 10-15 jobs they had opening up. The job fair lasted 2 days and over 700 people showed up on the first day alone.

I wish you the best of luck with your job search. Depending on your field, you might want to look into a temp agency. I have a scientific degree and was able to find work through Kelly Scientific. Even if it's not permanent work, some of the jobs are temp to hire, some are permanent jobs right off the bat. They will help you gain even more experience and perhaps increase your networking capabilities.

Well, I got an email this morning from the place I interviewed at last Monday:

"We appreciate the time you took in meeting with us, but we are pursuing other candidates for that job position..."

WHATEVER!!!

Good luck Hoho!! My fingers are crossed for you!

Jill, if this interview doesn't work out today I will go apply at some temp agencies. I am glad you are having a good experience with them. It is a good idea as a way to network. I hope you get something permanent soon too.

Debbie- that sucks you didn't get the job. Their loss IMO! Thanks got the good luck wishes. I will keep you updated.

I think the temp agency is a good idea. I know the company my dh works for only hires through temp agencies. Now with not wanting to lay off permanent workers they are only using temps for short term increase in business. If things get better they will hire permanent workers from those that have come through agency. By trying people out through temp agency they can tell if they fit in with company before they hire them.

Debbie,

You can still start a fitness business w/o being certified as a personal trainer. For one thing, you can charge to create personalized rotations for people. (I need one right now to correct muscle imbalance in my rt & left shoulder). Seriously, create a simple website for yourself, post the link in your Cathe signature or on your personal page, set up a paypal account and you are in business girl! Put in disclaimers out the wazoo (like every fitness video has) and GO. You can put in links to youtube videos of you working out to show form pointers. The fact that you're a writer is even better. Stumptous, Skwigg, etc write well so that builds the trust level w/ consumers.

Look at John Stone's website. His credibility comes from what he did himself. Likewise, your own body transformation & all you've posted here over the years show that you know your stuff. Someone doing what you've done on your own is seriously impressive! If you want to get certified down the road, fine, but that needn't stop you now. It's okay to be self-taught. I bet most fitness pros start that way. Cathe started teaching when she was 16. Yeah, she went to college later and has certification now, but not when she started.

Don't underestimate yourself and what you can offer. I'll gladly be your first paying customer. :)

I agree with Jonahnah! Debbie, you have this in the bag!

I work After School Care two days a week and nap room one day a week to supplement my private school teaching job. I will be looking for summer employment in hopes that I can keep doing what I love and make it. I also need to crack down and budget like a mad woman which means careful thought into what workouts I buy. It took a while for it to sink in that my lifestyle must change to some degree to keep up or better word...down with my smaller income.
