Another Kick Max Review

Cathlete
Kick Max is gaining more and more respect from me each time I pull it out, in fact I used to skip the "Leg Conditioning" and add more KPC combos.

However, yesterday I did Kick Max in full (even though I've had it since Jan.), burned 727 calories and felt completely different as if my body had worked out in a new way. I think part of the problem with forum members like myself is that we had a prejudice in favor of KPC which IMHO is more of a cardio-kickbox vs. classic boxing-kickbox.

I have also gotten in the habit of mish moshing it...taking the bootcamp blast out, or using the warm up in combo with KPC etc...

Does any body know what shoes Cathe and crew wear? Are they shoes specific for kickbox?

I simply dream of Cathe's future Boxing series. I'd love to try another advanced kickbox DVD but I don't want to cheat on our girl!LOL

hi, just out of curiosity, how do you know you burned 727 calories? i've seen other posts mention their calorie burn. how do you guys calculate this? fitday?

thanks.. and thanks for the review. i love KPC and am interested in kick max as well

I just reassessed this workout a few days ago and it is NOW in my weekly rotation. And the leg conditioning drills are worth it alone. I burn around 700 cal doing this workout also. I have a Polar Heart Monitor which calculates how much I burn each workout. Now, I don't know how I have worked out without it!!!;-)

i like kickmax better than KPC! i just did it this morning.... i try to do it once a week!

-------------
cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

I also like Kick Max better than KPC. I've been doing it weekly along with Low Max which is my favorite step workout right now. I love the leg conditioning drills at the end of Kick Max. I think I only burn a little over 500 calories with the workout, but I can't make it through the blast section yet. I'm sure my calories burned will bump up once I can get through that section without stopping.

I got Kickmax with the rest of the HCs when they first came out. I did it once and hated it. I could not bring myself to try it again untill about a month ago. I pulled it out and gave it another chance. I loved it! I am so happy that I gave it another chance. :)

How do you guys keep your heartrate up in the nonblast sections? I'm no cardio queen, but I have a very hard time getting my heartrate where I like it to be during these segments (based on perceived exertion). In my current rotation, I'm doing the cardio conditioning premix of KPC followed by the leg conditioning drills in KM. I'd like to use KM as produced, but can't figure out how to make it more effective for use on my cardio days. Any ideas?

According to my heart rate monitor, my heart rate stays around 130-135 for the nonblast section, even the leg sculpting segment. This is low, but according to everything I've read this is actually in my fat burning zone, so I'm fine with it.

Same here Kelley,
I stay in my fat burning zone until we reach the blasts. Which is fine with me also because I'm burning more calories. I guess it depends on your goals with Kick Max. If you are looking for increased aerobic endurance and ability then you may want to create a program that just includes the blasts and more of the combos from KPC. But if you are really looking to just burn calories with cardio and slight sculpting then combos from Kick Max do just fine.

Just be careful with the idea of a fat burning zone. It's really a myth. Okay, so technically in a certain zone you burn a higher percentage of fat per calorie than you do at higher intensity, but you always burn fat no matter how high of intensity you work. Think about it this way - as a walk vs a run. Walking, for most people, is in your fat burning zone. You walk for 1/2 an hour, you burn about 130 calories. Say 60% of those calories are fat, you burn 78 fat calories. If you run for half an hour you burn around 360 calories. Let go really severe (I know it's not this low, but I don't know the actual number) and say 30% of those calories are fat - you still burn 108 fat calories, which is more than the 78 of walking.

I'm not saying that you need to kill yourself with each workout, but when I hear people mention the fat burning zone, it's like nails across a chalkboard to me.

Hey Christine...

I just breezed in and have to agree with you 100%...even the nails across the blackboard!

When I opened this thread with the statement that I burned 727 calories- that was during the entire 70 minute workout. I am always burning calories at varying heart rates, and unlike a few, I never obsess about keeping my HR at a certain level. I focus at fine tuning form and working harder.

I am just lucky(?) that I am short and overweight at this point as I tend to burn a little higher kcal than if I were leaner!

Your post confirms what I've been saying since Kick Max came out. I was shocked when people found this one easy. I have been a kickboxer since I was a kid and I couldn't understand why people thought this DVD was a breeze. Like I have said lots of times, you get what you put into it. I give 100% every time I do this workout and I get a lot from it. I love KPC and Cardio Kicks too, but they're all different. I can't compare them because they all have different formats. Cathe's kickboxing workouts are my favorites.

I just did this one for the first time today. I enjoyed it. It was very different from Cathe's other KB work outs. The kicking and punching combos were fun and the more intricate ones were challenging as far as the choreo goes. The blasts were SUPER INTENSE and the leg drills were incredibly EVIL }( but super as well! I also liked it because with 3 such distinct sections to it, it would be very easy to pick and choose sections to do alone when short on time or in addition to another work out to mix it up!

I give it 2 thumbs up!:)

Soosan ~ Have you tried doing the blasts first and then go back to the combo's? That's what I did yesterday or you can choose the Bootcamp version under premixes, but there's only three punching/kicking combo's that way. I like doing the blasts first then I feel my heart rate stays elevated throughout the workout.

X ~ I'm glad I gave it another chance too. I was partial to KPC which I still love, but have been reaching for KM more and more.

Can't wait for the new DVD with the bag! My dh purchased a bag some time ago.

I always feel that my upper body gets a great workout when I do KM....my lats are always sore the next day - Come to think of it - I might just do this one tonight :)

Did kickmax for the first time in awhile last night(to many workouts not enough time). It kicked my butt I did as I always do the high intensity drills first-followed by 2-4 of the combos and last the leg drills.my legs were so shaking by the time I was done.I think this one is harder than kpc and has a fun factor for me where kpc sometimes I dread to do.I kept my heart rate above 75% thru the whole workout I added mm abs and called it a day.I hope drill max has the leg drills like km.They are killer.

Did this one again last night - loved it even more :) THe drills really grow on ya and if you really focus on the punches - its a terrific upper body workout!

The leg drills are great - just when you are ready to quit, Cathe calls out the final numbers!!!
