A fan who's a guy

Hello Cathe..
I thought you might like to hear from a man who's become a big fan of yours thanks to Fit TV.
I'm 46 years old, married, a father of (soon-to-be) two...and while I usually run for my cardio, I started using fitness videos about seven years ago when Taebo was the big craze. I enjoy kickboxing and like the fact I can workout when it's cold/rainy outside, and can save money on a gym membership.
Because of watching you on Fit TV, I now own Kickmax, Kick Punch and Crunch, Coremax and Bootcamp/Muscle Endurance. They are incredible workouts all, so thanks for that.
Here's my problem: I'm not much on dancey, heavily-choreographed step videos (two left feet, don't ya know) even though you and your team look like you're getting a heckuva workout. So can you recommend any other DVDs for us guys who just want some good, advanced cardio/circuit weight training so we can chase our toddlers around the house and not go "oy!" everytime we bend down to pick them up?
Also (and this may be an old topic on this board) I realize it's mostly women who buy these workouts and post on these forums...How about something from the husbands/dads/boyfriends?
Cathe, congrats on your success, good luck on your rehab and thanks for making a personal connection with your fans. They appreciate it more than you know.
Take care,
Capcity24

I am not Cathe (I wish! ;-) ) but I wanted to say welcome to the world of Cathe and her workouts! I was in a similar situation as you are (was HEAVILY into Tae Bo and also ran a lot). Then...lo and behold, I discovered Cathe's workouts 9 months ago (Boot Camp/Muscle Endurance was my first) and now, that's all I want to do. Everything else seems too easy now. When I do Tae Bo, I barely break a sweat until I am about 40 minutes into it. Cathe's workouts are the best I have found in my 33 years on earth.

Regarding your question of what else Cathe recommends, I would also be interested in hearing this. As much as I *WISH* I loved step, I just don't. In fact, I loathe and despise it. But I force myself to do it because it does get my heart rate up and I know it's good to get a good mix of workout regimens. But at the end of the day, I am still a kickbox and circuit training girl. That's what I enjoy most and what I want more of. I have heard Mindy Mylrea's "Cardio Strike Zone Plus Bootcamp" is good. I haven't tried it. Hopefully Cathe and some others can add some suggestions. Until then, enjoy your workouts and good luck with the new babies!

Hello Capcity24,

WELCOME TO CATHE!!!!

I think you would LOVE Cathe's High Step Training Advanced & High Step Challenge.

Another Not-Cathe weighing in here -

You may want to consider getting the Circuit Max / Cardio Kicks DVD, primarily for the Cardio Kicks routine. It's billed as an aerobic workout flavored by kickboxing, and that's fairly accurate. There is a 15-minute power drills section after the floor cardio, replete with some heavy-duty power kicks, other lower body cardio/leg-training drills, and upper body drills. Just love it. The Circuit Max routine is very high quality but does involve choreography.

Also consider getting Kick Max from her latest Hard Core series. It too is kickbox oriented, and there is a 15-minute Blast Challenge consisting of 10 short, sharp intensity blasts with minimal recovery.

Also consider getting the Rhythmic Step / Interval Max / Maximum Intensity Cardio 3-workout DVD, primarily for the Interval Max workout. Although this is a step-based interval workout, the choreography is very, very basic and the interval blasts (10; some on the step and some on the floor) will challenge you forever and blow the ceiling off your aerobic capacity, not to mention your leg power.

Also consider getting the I-Max 3 workout from the Hard Core Series, primarily for the Blast-Only premix (about 24 minutes long; pure nosebleed cardio and leg challenge).

HTH -

Welcome Capcity 24 !
I am one of the few men on the board.I was the only male participant on the Cathe 2005 road trip.I have been following Cathe for years.I know you are probably intimidated by Step workouts & so was I when I started. I have now mastered them all.Once you get it it's really fun & less impact on the knees than running which previously was my main source of cardio.Recommendations for Cardio without the choreography-that is a difficult one since you have Bootcamp. You could always substute your own cardio between the weight sections for example in Circuit Max you could do the jumping jacks or running on the spot during the step sections & join in on the weight secions. If you have room I would get a jump rope & do this as well for the cardio intervals - you are really just rasing the heart rate so whatever does the trick. You could do this with the High step cicuit workouts Step Jump & Pump etc..
Take Care

Yay capcity24! We love newbies lol. I'm not much into stepping either. KPC is my fave, and I have yet to try Kickmax. I 2nd A-Jock's recommendation for that one, especially if you like KPC.

Hi Capcity! How fun to hear from you. So glad to hear that my workouts are being enjoyed by our male audience as well...and better yet that they are keeping you challenged.

Since you already have Kickmax and Kick, Punch and Crunch, I also recommend Cardio Kicks DVD since this is a high low kickbox inspired workout (and has a couple of guys joining in the "fun" too). It is not overly choreographed (only a little bit in the beginning) and then has some nice drills at the end. You WILL sweat! Btw, this was actually my first attempt at kickboxing so you may want to carry over my form pointers and technique from my other workouts ;-). Circuit Max is also on this DVD and from what you describe above, I think it may be too choreographed for you. But give it a look and you might be able to put in some generic cardio moves while we do the step or hi/lo portions.

Another workout I think you'll enjoy is High Step Challenged Advanced. It is a cardio circuit workout that contains cycles that are a bit longer than those of Boot Camp.

Finally I think you will enjoy 2 of the 3 workouts on the Rhythmic Step DVD. While Rhythmic Step is too choreographed based on what you prefer, the other two make up for it.

Interval Max....high intensity, easy to follow step and floor intervals that will make you sweat.

Maximum Intensity Cardio (approx. 30 minutes of hi/lo and 30 minutes of step)....A little choreographed in some spots but basically a get down to business workout after the first 12 minutes.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Welcome Capicty 24 and hello Chris! Just an idea. I too, wasn't too interested in the step when I first started working out years ago, I don't know, it was a little intimidating to me and once the instructor started turning over the step I'd get dizzy:+ So, just a suggestion...do the workout without the step. That's what I done at first then like you Chris, I eventually tried it and I love it! Seems to pass time away quickly now wanting to see what new and fun moves Cathe comes up with. Keep up the good work guys!!! :)

My thanks to Cathe and all the others who responded to my question about guy-friendly cardio/circuit workouts...I think High Step Challenged Advanced may be my next purchase, if I can work up the energy to point-and-click after another killer Bootcamp workout..
I am still a little amazed, frankly, at the apparent scarcity of men who take advantage of what I think are some of the most challenging workouts on the market today (Kickmax, KPC, Bootcamp.) Either that, or they are just not posting on this board as often as the female fans of Cathe.
Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I wonder why most of the fitness DVDs - and the resulting infomercials - on the market seem to target women. Taebo and Bowflex aside, I think there's a pile of cash to be made by marketing an "average-guy-friendly" kickbox/cardio/circuit training workout.
And maybe Cathe's just the woman to do it ;>)

Again, my thanks and good luck to all (especially you Cathe, with your recovery!)

I agree with you Capacity24, that there are a lot of men out there "hungry" for some athletic, high intensity workout DVDs. My ex-boyfriend was a nay-sayer until I got him hooked on Boot Camp/Muscle Endurance. Now, he bows to Cathe's image on the screen saying "I am not worthy!" It's probably all about awareness, so yeah, some marketing attempts could go a long way.

Hi there Capcity24! Welcome to the wonderful world of Cathe workouts.

I'm surprised to see there were no mentions (unless I missed them) of Imax 2 and Imax 3 - both killer workouts. I like interval training because the cardio section is shorter and a good start for a 2-left-footed newbie.

The cardio sections are simple, short and sweet and gear you up for some really tough blasts. Then you get a short, but much needed active recovery.

Intervals are also good if you're plateau-ing. I sometimes take 1 week off and then return with Interval Max, Imax 2 or 3. Kicks my butt every time, so it's a good addition to the other kickboxing workouts you may own.

Since hopping on the Cathe bandwagon, I've sold all my other dvds (including ALL my Taebo workouts) on ebay...

good luck!!
Becky

Capcity24, thank you for starting this thread! My brother-in-law loves Cathe's strength workouts. He's simply amazed at the poundage she uses in Maximum Intensity Strength. He currently is only doing the weighted workouts because, like you, he has two left feet! I think based on the feedback I'm reading on this thread I just may have to get him a copy of Bootcamp! }(

Enjoy Cathe's workouts. They will bring men and women to the next level of fitness. :7
