17 YEARS OF SOBRIETY!

A-Jock, your continued focus on being a better person (giving up the alcohol) not only benefits yourself...but all those around you. I'm sending you a huge {{{{HUG}}}} for taking responsibility for yourself, your health and ultimately your happiness.

CONGRATULATION'S INDEED!!!!!

AJ~

Each July 20th I read this post and cheer for you! I have come to look for it.

True fitness in mind and body is, has, and always will be in your life, my life and the lives of many of the friends here.

We have much to be thankful for and proud of. And I am thankful for the chance to share this with the people on this forum.

Congratulations on your continued sobriety!

Congratulations on 17 years! Wow! I think it's terrific that you still celebrate this accomplishment each year. It's really a sort of "birth" day for you, in many ways. Or maybe you could call it your rebirthday. I have a couple of those myself, but none as incredible as yours.

I really like what you said about bringing in enthusiasm along with a sense of duty. The truth of that is still ringing in my head right now--the importance of it.

Congrats and thanks for being you, A-Jock!

I've always loved your posts A-jock. As I'm reading this one I find it inspirational. Everybody has their own hurdles to overcome in life. Sometimes I think that my life is harder than anyone else's and I just want to give up to depression and stop dealing with stress. I read this and I just think that with only one change you can transform your life from sad/stressful/mediocre to wonderful. You made your decision 17 years ago and you made a commitment. I bet there were times than you thought you couldn't do it. But time goes on so quickly and now you can look back and talk about your past proudly to others. Congratulations and thank you for your post.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to you A-JOCK! My dad is a recovering alcoholic with less than a year under his belt, and you are an amazing inspiration.

Aquajock, Congratulations to you! Just wanted to ask one question since you have become Ms. Buff, did you start exercising before or after you declared sobriety? Basically, when and how did you transform into your rock solid self? Just curious!

Hi, Emy! Ohhhhhh, meaningful exercise came several years after that first morning that I woke up and said, "I can't do this today." After some sporadic off-and-ons at a local YWCA, swimming mostly, I began simply walking around some local lakes in the afternoons after work, then cycled through various aerobic machines (Nordic Track, stationery bike), then discovered Kathy Smith videos, then discovered the joys of aqua aerobics (enjoying it so much I became an instructor), then discovering the joys of Cathe in the fall of 2000. I wrote about this at some length in the Success Story forum "The Last One Picked For The Team".

Consistent exercise didn't begin for me until about 5 years after my last drink. How I wish I'd known then what I know now about the mental health benefits of a physically healthy lifestyle. Ah well. Live and learn, yes?

Thanks for your good thoughts!

A-Jock
