Now I remember......

Now I remember why I was a lurker only and went away from the boards for so long. Just too much hostility, anger, and plain old fashioned meanness on the boards lately. Flame away, but I try to avoid the obvious *antagonistic/political/religious* threads, but darned if the apparently *innocent* ones aren't tricking me now. And on top of it all, now we have spam attacks!

Thanks to all of you who have helped me with my fitness questions and health issues. I really appreciate your kind words and encouragement.
I'm heading back to lurkdom and my check-in thread. I choose to live a drama free life and this is no longer feeling like a *safe* place to be.

Good luck to all of you in your fitness and life journeys! :)
Becky

Hi Becky! Just to let you know, there is actually a way to block obnoxious posts - I just found out from another thread this morning. You just need to go to "User CP", "Settings & Options", "Edit Block List". You can then block certain user's posts. ;) It does help clean up the board a bit. :)

Thanks for the heads-up Liann! It'll come in handy. Lately there have been more posts I would rather block than read. It seems like people have forgotten that this is a "fitness" forum.

I believe that under the open discussion forum, it says "talk about anything you like in this forum". Is "anything" suddenly synonymous with "fitness"?

No, that's not what I meant at all. It just seems like fitness has taken a back seat to politics and religion lately. It wouldn't be so bad if the discussions could remain civil but so many have turned into nasty, name-calling, I don't agree with you so you have no right to post, type threads. Just my opinion.

It would be nice if they had two open discussion forums - one Open Fitness Discussion and one Open Discussion - non-fitness.

If I'm one of the one's who's made it unpleasant for you to visit here (I AM very keyed-up about this election, I admit) I sincerely apologize and vow to cut-out the left-leaning (not too far left) political slant right now. By now, we all know where we stand and can always PM each other so there really isn't any reason to get ugly, turning the political into the personal, HERE. I hate that so many people whom I respect have stopped posting here at all because of the hostility. I think a lot of us are just so worried that we're losing touch with our innate humanity. True, no excuse. I'm done with politics on the boards. I'll keep it PM. I truly am sorry.

Maybe if we just highlight certain thread titles as *Political* or something like that. That way those who don't want to get involved can just pass it over.

I like the more controversial topics mainly because they make me think, and sadly I cannot have these same conversations offline ~ people are either too afraid or get too upset.

We can keep it civil if we try. If not, there's the "Ignore" feature. :)

SSW - There's no problem with expressing your opinions. I don't think I've ever seen you post anything that you should apologize for.

The last straw for me today were the really nasty personal attacks taking place. I just couldn't keep my "mouth" shut to some of that.

Sorry, Becky...I really don't blame you for feeling the way you do.

Not really but if people are looking for a fight, which some obviously are, there are more appropriate forums to duke it out on, such as slashdot.org and the like.

Yah - kind of sad huh? That's the reason I find myself to be more of a lurker lately too. I hear you Becky. Even when I tried to post something a bit light hearted, seems it quickly got knocked away by the very heated ones that seem to have grown in number. Robin - thanks for the peeps thread. Shelley - thanks for the question thread. Carry on all.

What Lorrie said.

ITA, Becky and Lorrie and others, I've also been avoiding the obviously political or controversial threads, but even some of the others have been full of unpleasantness.

While I wouldn't dream of telling people what to post, perhaps we should all think a bit before hitting that "submit reply" button.

The disappointing part is that the political or "issues" threads can be a lot of fun, and really lively. I think a lot of us enjoy that and can be respectful while disagreeing. Some folks can't do that though. Sigh.

Ditto!

I've been on this forum since 1999 (although you wouldn't know it by my post count:eek:). I've seen a lot of people come and go as well as an increasing number of flame wars. I just choose to ignore those posts rather than fuel the flames. I'm not going to let anyone push me away from here...there are just too many wonderful people I've met and enjoy "talking" to. Heck...I'm even one of Robin's peeps now;) How great is that!

We're just going through a bit of a rough patch right now guys. No worries. People are really stressed out and there's a lot to talk about and a lot on people's minds. Unfortunately most of these things aren't related to fitness, :( and when it's all people can think about, it's hard to shut off that anxiety and thought process when you log onto the Cathe forum.

Everyone hang in there. We'll be ok. Cathe.com has had some rough times before but we've made it through. I like to think of this site and the forum as a bit of an escape from reality where I can chat about my (slightly ridiculous) adoration of Cathe, her workouts, and fitness in general. Maybe we should all try and think of Cathe dot Com as our little "escape" for a while. Everyone's stressing about the economy, money, war, politics, etc. every other moment of our lives. We should try and make this place our "refuge" from all that negativity and stress.

Just a thought. I'm not ready to give up on this site yet. I love Cathe (and many of you!) far too much. :)

The advice, support, and friendship this site has granted me FAR, and I do mean FAR outweighs the rough patches, I simply pick and choose which topics to read, and have finally gotten the hang of the fine art of thinking before I post anything stupid...(I think....;))
