Zumba?

Zumba seems to be very popular, although I've never tried it and not sure if it's my thing. I don't typically like heavily choreographed or dancy step DVD's, for instance and prefer more athletic moves. I did see an infomerical and everyone was really sweating though. Any diehard Cathe fans out there who have done Zumba and can fill me in and compare to Cathe (if there is any comparison, that is.) Maybe it's just one of those exercise fads that will come and go.

I love Zumba. Just like anything else you get out of it what you put into it. I HATE dancing, but I love Zumba. For me it's fun. I'd much rather do a Zumba class than a step class. I'm not coordinated enough for step! Lol. Maybe try it and see if you like it

Yeah, I'm not a member of a gym, so it would mean buying a DVD. So, figured I'd do a little research before investing.

I love Zumba class but not not the DVD's. For me part of the experience is playing off of everyones energy at class. They may have classes available at other places other than a gym where you don't have pay membership fees. I live in a small town and it is held at our local grange. The previous poster said you get out of it what you put in, this is very true. Also it's about the instructor. I have taken from about 8 different instructors. Some are so bad, that if that is what Zumba was I would never go. Luckily my local instuctors are perfect. Its dancey, but repetitive, so it's not hard to pick up on choreography wise.

Never done Zumba so I can't help you there but a coworker did mention she liked it. I've seen some groups on meetup.com or a local exercise directory website that have some zumba sessions and sometimes for free.

Not a Zumba fan here. I think it is sensationalized. All that hip-swiveling-gyrating just looks well, silly to me. Please don't hate me because I am not a Zumba fan, you Zumba lovers. This is only my perspective and if you like it, well, that's your perogative, just as it is mine to dislike it.

Also, I once had a friend who loved Zumba. She was a diva-type and over-weight and all I saw was it was not helping her. Then, the final nail in the coffin for me ever trying Zumba was her and her husband's hateful treatment of my husband and I for no reason. They just decided they did not like us and then were diabolically and painfully treacherous. Now, whenever I see Zumba I think of them and cringe.

I just think that there are so many other things that are far more effective for me: Hiit, Step, Weights, Running and Cycling. Also, I prefer more "Athletic" type forms of exercised as opposed to choreographed dancing.

These are my Zumba thoughts.

I'm not a big fan either (and I say that even though I've taken a workshop with the inventor of Zumba, Beto Perez). I have taken probably 15-20 classes and have really tried to like it. It is OK for the first 15 minutes or so but then I get bored. To be fair, it is an excellent workout when taught by a good instructor - but it's just not my thing. I find myself sweating away but still counting the minutes until the class is over. I like my cardio to have a bit more "brain challenge" to it, and I get that from Cathe's step DVDs!

I know I'm in the minority with this opinion. Most of my friends who've tried it, love it.

I started with the DVDs, then went to live classes because I liked it so much. Check to see if your library has any of the DVDs, that way you can try it out before spending money on it.

I use my Zumba DVDs in rotation with Cathe for a change of pace. There is much hip action in Zumba, and the dancing is not crazy difficult. Try a free class or rent the DVD at the library if you don't want to pay. The live class is the best one for me, and you will sweat.

Thanks so much for all the feedback and the varying opinions! I tend to think it's not going to be my thing, but it wouldn't hurt to check out a DVD at the library just for the heck of it.

If you can try a class. You can find one close by and you pay $5 as you go or 40 for the month here in SWF. The class is much more fun and energetic than home with a DVD.

Check out some of the you tube videos you will see how easy it is to do, then check out a class......Zumba!

Zumba is a fun class to take at the gym....if your instructor is upbeat and there to give you the best workout. But, I did have to have the DVD's.....and hated them. I sold them on ebay within a week of receiving them. Just not the same as taking a class. I would also say, they are alot of zumba instructors that are extremely overweight. It is a "fun" class to take but I would not rely upon it to become or to stay physically fit!!! Just my opinion. :D
