Your Favorite Island Getaway???

Since this is such a varied group of active people, I thought this would be the best place for this question. DH and I are trying to decide if we want to go back to Mexico for the 4th year in a row on our next vacation, or if we should be looking at another destination (Bahamas, Barbados, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, etc.). Hawaii is more than we want to spend (although I LOVE it there)- sorry Amy! Mexico is very reasonable and beautiful - we go about an hour south of Cancun. We enjoy being active, so warm water is a must. We'd like somewhere that has good kiteboarding and snorkeling. Although I'm certified to dive, that's not so much of a priority for us - especially since I haven't been diving in 13 years!!! Nice beaches don't hurt either. :) We're not much into night life, as we like to have fun during the day and do nothing at night so we can be up bright and early for the next day.

Hey Susan....:)...I have to say...years ago Kauai (sp) was my ultimate favorite island....maybe the Mai Tais helped...:)...

I'll have to agree with you there Carole! I wish it wasn't so expensive. Were you a runner then? I loved running really early in the mornings. Both times I went to Hawaii I came home with orange running shoes from the soil. :)

I didn't run there....too bad....:)..I was 18...but fell in love with the island and hope to go back soon...:)

Wahoo!!!!! HAWAII!!!!!!

I know you didn't want to hear it, Susan, but HAWAII IS THE BEST!!!! :p }(

I've also never been anyplace else, so Hawaii is all I can offer. :p :+

The Dominican Republic, if you classify that as an island. I loved it there and want to go back again someday. Pickle

I've been to Bermuda a few times (years ago though) and it was absolutely GORGEOUS! You would have to go in the warmer months though because they actually have seasons...thier winter sees lows in the 60's...how in the world could anyone deal!?!;)

I know this isn't an island (and neither is Mexico ;) :p ), but I am so in love with Costa Rica. There are absolutely breathtaking rain forests with amazing hiking trails, and you have an ocean on both sides of you and you can snorkel and dive (not sure about kiteboarding, though, sorry). We stayed in San Jose, the capitol, and nothing was too far away. There is a volcano, Mt. Irazu, and - ah!- I just loved it! I can't say enough about it!

DH and I love ST John, USVI, but it's not for everyone. There are no casinos and the shopping is limited. But if you want uncrowded beaches with superb snorkeling right off the beach, this is the place to go. 2/3 of the island is National Park and there are multiple beaches to choose from. You can swim, snorkel, dive, kayak, sail hike etc, etc. One drawback, however, is that it is expensive. Good luck with choosing. It's a nice choice to have to make.

I am partial to St. Thomas because I grew up there, but if I had to choose I would love to go to Hawaii. If you decide on St. Thomas let me know. I can tell you where and where not to stay.

I've never been but have always wanted to go to St. Lucia (they call it the Hawaii of the Atlantic :)). I've also heard that Aruba has some of the best windsurfing.

Mexico is great isn't it? I'm going in a month, I can't wait!!

Have fun planning your vacation!

Susan, I would have to say Hawaii!! I like St. Thomas and Barbados, but I love Hawaii. What about Aruba or St. Lucia? Those are beautiful too.

Now you have me daydreaming. :p My favorite island of all time is Santorini. I LOVE the Greek Isles....

I've only ever been to Tobago, but I loved it. It's the island in Robinson Crusoe. It is very small and still very "untouched" although the last time I was there was 1997. They have developed some, but are trying to prevent it from becoming a destination strip mall. It's in the southern hemisphere, but from Pigeon Point beach, on a clear day, you can see Venezuela on the horizon!! They have several eco-resorts (one called Footprints - up in the rain forest). If you're looking for simple, beautiful and inexpensive, I highly recommend Tobago. There is actually a reference to it in this month's Shape magazine.

I love St. Lucia. Great hiking there and good snorkeling. Fly into Castries if you stay in the northern part of the Island.

St. John has wonderful snorkeling; no hiking there...

BTW, Hawaii is on sale right now. You may want to check this out. I love Maui! :)
