WW points question- keeping it off

Hello everyone!

My question -

On Nov, 22 I will be having my reconstruction surgery. It involves not only my chest, but the removal of fat from my belly, so I'll be feeling it at 'both ends', so to speak - hee-hee. It's called a DIEP flap reconstruction. The plan is six weeks off, but probably more like eight. That means no Cathe and no riding my horse.

I've been doing WW points and exercising like a fiend trying to get off weight that I gained during treatment. I have gotten off 27 pounds.

How do I keep this weight off while I recuperate? I hope to be able to at least do some walking, so I won't be completely inactive.

Should I lower my points? I eat 25 each day right now. If I stayed at 25, would the weight stay off, even without exercising?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I can't answer your question; just wanted to say that I hope you have a quick and easy recovery. Congratulations on the 27 lb. weight loss. You are an inspiration!

Hi Susan,

Whatever your weight-loss mode "base points" per day is (not counting your weekly 35 points allowance) would be the points you eat and still lose weight, even without activity points to add in. I can't recall the points requirements for all the weight ranges, but I do know that for 150 pounds and less, it's 20 points a day + your weekly 35 that you can use however you want.

Hope this helps!!

Jennifer,

That does help, thanks!

I'm at 159# right now. I eat 25 points per day and Friday is an "anything" day.

I don't count activity points because I don't know how. I'm not even an official WW member - a friend just gave me a points book and points calculator about 5 years ago and I've been working with that.

I know a few things have changed since then, but I haven't kept up.

Thanks for you reply!

Susan-
Thoughts are with you ! Any surgery is demanding on the body. I would focus on base points CLEAN EATING during recovery. The most important factor is that clean eating will help your body heal most effeciently...second factor is the weight. If you find you are hungry while on base points adding in additional clean foods will not hurst you (focus veggies/fruits)... Please just make sure you keep your focus on giving your body the proper nutrients to heal and that will take care of potential wt gain.
Again. Hugs & prayers coming your way.

Thanks, Traci! That is good common sense advice that I will be sure to keep in mind when I'm craving the chocolate - heehee!

Best!

Just want to add....that if your WW points finder scale is 5 years old keep in mind that a few years ago they changed it in that the fiber grams only goes up to "4 or more" so it actually changes the point value on high-fiber foods. I remember putting in beans, for instance, and coming up with zero....no more! If you have the old sliding scale, I think it can still be used....just don't pass 4 gms. of fiber and you'll be ok.

Hope that helps!!!!!!

ETA - There's a WW check-in on the other forum here. You might be interested. They have a wealth of information for what they do!

Susan,

This site belongs to a wonderful lady who is a WWer and an avid exerciser. Her name is Leigh. You may want to check out her site regarding the surgery as it sounds so very much like the reconstruction she had in July and you may be able to gain some insight from her blog.

Here is the site.

Go to the "New Challenges" page.

I wish you the best with you surgery.

Kirsten -

That is a super website! How inspirational!

She got a TRAM flap reconstruction, and I'm having a DIEP flap. Very similar, but the difference is that the DIEP flap is considered a "free flap" reconstruction. In the DIEP flap, my belly flab will be completely removed and reattached to my chest via microsurgery (can you say tummy tuck?).

In a TRAM flap, the belly flap is removed, along with a piece of abdominal muscle (to provide blood supply to the skin flap) and tunneled under the skin and slipped through a hole made in the chest (where the breast used to be).

This method would not work for me, as the function of the abs is compromised. i ride my horse nearly every day, and anyone who's been on a horse will tell you, you can't stay on without your core engaged!

The DIEP flap improves on the TRAM because the flap is completely free and the blood supply is connected through blood vessel in the flap, which is why microsurgery is needed. The abs are left intact, and IMHO, pictures I've seen show very natural looking results.

Thanks again!
