To those of you who recommended The Kettlebell Way DVD, THANK YOU!! Holy moly, what a fantastic workout! I don't think I can ever go back to doing the Iron Core Way DVDs ever again!

Now I see what all the kettlebell fuss is all about ;).

I can't wait till they have Vol 2 available. I'll be first in line with my credit card :).

I haven't followed the discussion about this DVD, does it work the core only or is it a full body workout. What size kettlebell is reccommeded?
Thanks,

sarah

Hi Sarah,

It's full body, and they recommend that you select a weight that's challenging for you. I'm using a 10lb because I'm new to kettlebells and am still learning how to handle them properly/safely, but Beth (the female instructor) is using a 12lb and Anthony (male instructor) is using something pretty heavy (he doesn't say what weight, but you can just tell from the way he handles it that it's heavy ;)).

Aren't KB's great?
What I like best is that, even though you are working hard for those 2-minute periods, the rests between sets make it doable, and you (or at least *I*) don't realize how hard you're really working until some DOMS sets in the next day!

"The Kettlebell Way" is basically a remake of "Providence." If they do a vol. 2, it might be a remake of "Newport," so why wait? Get Newport! ("Firepower," the third in Anthony's series, uses 2 KB of the same size, which is why I wouldn't recommend it).

Ooh, good tip, Kathryn, thanks! :)

(Although I'm hoping Vol 2 will be released at a lower price, so I may be tempted to wait for it to be released ;)).

And I know exactly what you mean about not knowing how hard you're working till you feel the DOMS. Actually, I felt how hard I was working DURING LOL! And I've got DOMS now. Oh boy.

I couldn't believe how it got my heart rate going. I thought I was going to do cardi snippets during the 1 minute breaks, but boy I needed all of the 1 minute breaks to catch my breath and get ready for the next round.

Lovin' it!!

More KB Questions

OK, so now I'm thinking again about getting some kettlebells, esp. since it sounds like it'll still be awhile until we get STS. (I've been trying to resist their lure!;-))

Can I piggyback onto this thread to ask some more questions? When you use KB workouts, do you just do KB workouts for the entire week, or do you integrate a more traditional weight-training video in there, too? For instance, would you use just KB workouts three times a week, combined with two or three days of cardio?

Also, do most of you do KB workouts for a period of a few weeks at a time (as you would any other weight rotation) before moving back to "regular" weight workouts?

TIA!
:)

IMO, you can do KB workouts anywhere from 1-3 or 4 days a week, depending on what you prefer (and how addictive they get!). You could also do what Pavel Tsatsouline (the KB "big cheese" who introduced the modern KB to the USE) recommends, and do a little KB every day, practicing ('greasing the groove') rather than actually doing a full workout (at leaast at first). You could also do some KB before or after, or in the midst of a regular weigt workout.

I think KB training works best if you keep doing it in some way, maybe mixing up the ways I mentioned above. So you might start by doing KB 2x/week, along with an upper/lower body split on two other days. Then ('cuz you have fallen in love with KB!), you decided to do just KB workouts for your weight work (though they also work cardio and flexibility) for 2-3 weeks. Then after that, you transition into more traditional weight work but (because you LOVE swings, like I do!) you decide to do swings 2 days a week, before or after (or in a break during--like between lower body and upper body work) a regular weight workout.

The usual recommendations for starting Kettlebell trainees is 18# for women (or 26# for 'strong women') (Beth goes pretty light, and I think if she went heavier, her butt would look better...just sayin'!). I started with 15#, and it was just fine (too heavy for some moves, like Turkish Get-ups, but pretty much any weight would be for that move at first, IMO!)

This workout, as most KB training, is a full-body workout that incorporates strengh, cardiovascular work and stretching all in one, as well as being a heck of a core workout. (It's especially great for the butt--swings and all moves based on them--like cleans--engage the entire posterior chain---IF done correctly, which can be a problem with getting a 'too-light' KB: one can tend to lift the KB with the arms during the swings rather than powering with the legs and glutes).

RE: More KB Questions

Thanks, Kathryn!

Linda, I'm joining you in the *really* tempted group!

I may have to stop by Target today to pick one up . . . .}(

RE: More KB Questions

Is there a good place to buy the DVD and also to purchase KB to get a good price?

RE: More KB Questions

OK - you are intriguing me - BIG TIME!!! I'll have to check out those workouts now. :D I LOVE new workouts!!!!! LOL

Marcia.

Target and Dick's Sporting Goods carry GoFit Kettlebells, so there would be no shipping charges (which can be hefty for KB's: one exception is www.performbetter.com , which has good shipping costs, and last year had a good sale about this same time, with something like 20%--or maybe more---off KB's).

The nice thing about buying them in person is you can check out how rough the handles are. They can really vary from one KB to the next, even in the same brand (I luckily got a smooth-handled 15# from GoFit online, but then went to the store to buy more, and found some had really nasty rough spots on that could tear up hands big time). They also carry the Sarah Lurie DVD's. I haven't seen other KB DVD's in any stores, just online.

Dragon Door (which is the company Pavel is associated with) sells a lot on Ebay (KB's, DVD's, books, kits with KB's and DVD's or books), and if you're lucky, you might get a very good price (just check total price, including shipping charges).

Anthony Dilugio's site ( www.artofstrength.com ) has the lowest (only?) price on the "Kettlebell Way" workout right now: $39.95, which is $10 off what it is going to be---and I don't know how long the intro price will last).

RE: More KB Questions

Okay, you guys got me. I just bought the DVD. I'm kinda bored with my workouts right now, so I can't wait to try this out!

Kathryn, do you think 15# is the way to start?

Thanks, guys!

Kelly

RE: More KB Questions

>Kathryn, do you think 15# is the way to start?

It worked for me (but I went up quickly in weight for swings--you can make the lighter weights 'last longer' by doing 1-armed swings once 2-armed ones get too light--and I couldn't possibly use it for TGU's at first). (And it didn't hurt that the GoFit 15# KB is a pretty red color that attracted me! I 'had to' go to another brand once to acquire KB's in the size range where the GoFit ones are green or yellow!)
;)

RE: More KB Questions

Y'all are strong!!! :)

I started with the 10lb weight and am still using that--I think going up in weight right now would do some serious strain on my sensitive shoulders right now (I can feel a bit of a stretch already on some exercises, but nothing uncomfortable or painful).
