Workout Warriors Feb 14th - 20th

I do believe I beat MJ to starting the thread today! Where are you MJ???

This morning I did Disk 4 AND I did all the drop set push-ups on my toes!!!! I swear Cathe uses more versions of the word intense in this workout than any other! And she's just bouncing around being all excited and perky while I'm groaning and grunting.

Actually above freezing when I got up at 6 a.m. today! It's been several months since that happened. Maybe back in early December.

Have a good week everyone!

Janis??? I never asked you to what degree I'm supposed to avoid sugar? Certainly a lot of things are obvious, but what about things like bread, buns... I made a loaf of bread yesterday and left out the sugar, but it got me to thinking about it. Saturday morning I was reaching for the maple syrup to put on my Cream of Wheat and opted for adding some cinnamon instead. Yesterday I made cookies for the guys and kept having to stop myself from licking my fingers when done.

Thoughts?

Mary- I was saddened to hear about Simon's report. Please know that my prayers are with you. If there is anything that I can do, please do not hesititate to let me know.

Kimberly- I really do like Supreme 90. It is well worth the $19.99. I sent you a PM.

Cathy- you are doing great with your no sugar pledge. Keep up the good work.

It is 50 degrees here today and I am loving it. We are supposed to have sixty degrees by the end of the week. Spring here we come!

Workout this morning- Drill Max

Happy Valentine's Day!

I had my 40 story stair climb on Saturday morning. I finished in 6 min 56 sec, which was about 20ish seconds behind the fastest female and I was in the top 25. Not a HUGE deal, since a good many of the climbers were wearing firefighter gear. But I think there were a couple hundred people there, so I'm pretty pleased. My lungs were on fire when I got to the top and I found myself wishing I'd worn my Heart Rate monitor so I'd finally have a really good idea of what my max HR is. I don't push myself to that level when I'm running and now I'm thinking I may need to step up my game.

My BF is a very competitive person and is pushing me to start being more competitive in how I look at running races. He wants me to win my age group. LOL - we'll see. I've got a 9k coming up in a few weeks, so we'll see how I do.

Yesterday was a fairly warm day and I took advantage of it for my longer run. 7 miles and I got hit with flying road slush a few times by passing SUVs. It felt good to be back outside, though. I just can't get myself really psyched for an hour run on the treadmill, no matter how hard I try.

Doing my 2nd week of Meso 2 week 1 today. Chest/Shoulders & Tri. I actually ended up blowing off Back & Biceps last week, so I'm thinking maybe I'll do that instead.

Hey Guys

Regina You asked last week what was everyone's favourite w/o, then didn't say what yours was?? I can't really decide. I just like stepping - even when I'm puffing and I hate it - I still love it. So I think I will have to say Rhythmic Step is my fave, as it was my first ever one and introduction my to Cathe.

Someone was talking about Patrick G - Not Yr Momma's Step - (was that you too Regina, not sure??) I flicked back to remind me who it was, but never managed to clock it in my haste, anyway I previewed that over @ YouTube. Looks cool. Might think about that one. I've also been looking @ Turbo Jam as that's on Amazon UK. I've only just bought STS, but someone offered me a gift so was wondering if I might have one of these or just stick with Cathe. Any opinions on Turbo Jam would be welcome.

Anyway - hi to everyone. I did my STS wk 1, which I really enjoyed and am really looking forward to continuing. Eveything's just a bit out of whack at the moment as my routine's not on schedule. Should be back to normal in a week or two.

Donna I was checking the check-in (!!!) waiting to hear how you did on the stair climb, but I was a week ahead, and then I saw that it wasn't when I thought it was, but this w/e. Anyway well done with that, sounded a bit more competitive than I was expecting. Love the bird song APP post - delayed LOL for that one.

Gu0.cci's ont he keyboard - whoo there fella - not helpful.

Cathy / Donna I really like deadlifts. I look forward to them, when I read your comments made me think I might want to up the weights a bit there. Bit of lazyitus me thinks.

Janis Hope you had a good trip - might want to tell us what you got up to??

(((HUGS))) everyone.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

We are having QUORN for tea. Seemed like a good idea, now it's cooked it tastes a bit mushy (that's the polite version) YUMMY. Mind you I got taken out for Indian on Saturday - so a bit of low fat might fit in quite well right about now. Got to fit into my TuTu on Saturday night and that won't be a pretty sight. :p

Happy Valentines Day Warriors!

This is my mathematical equation to explain the last few days: Excessive Driving + Age + PMS = Fatigue Induced Time Warp.

This morning I did C2 5k week 4, day 1- I walked 10, ran 3, walked 1.5 ran 5, repeat the walk/run for a total of 32 minutes. Then STS disc 16 (M2 W2) S C & T. I opened the program with 15 pushups on my toes. My dear fitness friend has issued a mutual pushup challenge…the idea is to add 1 each day, so tomorrow I’ll open my rehab day with 16 pushups. I might go for a walk later with Rowan and my DS13, but it is raining raining raining right now, we’ll see how bad it is in a few hours and hopefully go out later in the day.

Mary – Oh my, I am so very sorry. Please do let us know what we can do to best support you. When will you be able to see Simon again? Soon, I hope.

Cathy – Thanks for thinking of my hip and the long hours of sitting and driving. It wasn’t too bad this time…yay! improvements are occurring. (Do you remember when I could barely get out of the car after a drive!) Sugar. Well, I think maple syrups, molasses, and honey in moderation and in small amounts are probably ok, and sugar in prepared goods like bread is fine. What I am abstaining from is sugar, brown sugar & succanat in baked goods like cookies , cake, and candy….and chocolate. I have been eating dried figs. *Snap* (that’s the sound of my cracking whip!) Lol :D Tell me,honestly, don't you already feel better and notice a difference in your energy level? (hormones notwithstanding) Has the number on the scale budged?

Kim – I need a cat sentry in the pantry! I wasn’t doing anything terribly exciting – shucks. On Thursday I had a hair appointment in the larger city near my house- it is about 1.5 hr down a curvy mountain road. On Friday I drove into the Sacramento area (2.5 hr drive) to see Rowan’s breeder and take him to her groomer. While he was getting his long puppy locks cut down (boo hoo) the breeder and I went shopping and out to lunch. (bloat-er-if-ic Chinese – I swear, just add water and you could sink me to the ocean floor.) I bought a fabulous deep, rich brown leather coat and some pants. I tried for jeans, but I guess jeans aren’t cut for normal people anymore. Quorn – yeah – I’ll pass, seems to much like penance. :p

Regina – Ah – enjoy the warmer weather. I love Drill Max, such a fun one that also seems to go really fast.

Donna – Wow! Impressive! Great time on your climb. So cool that others were wearing firefighting gear, I love that! Was that part of a challenge, or were they cross-fit guys? I can relate to the long run on the treadmill thing – hence the euphemism dreadmill, I can’t seem to run more than 6 or 7 miles on the tm then I have to move it outside. How many races have you run? Does Coach Jenny recommend tempo runs, fartlek runs, race pace runs etc... what do your typical weekly runs look like?

MJ – Yes, only heterosexual treats, thank you.:D How are you? How is work? Did you re-start STS? Which week are you on with C2 5k? Were you able to play tennis this weekend?

Kimberly – When I looked at Cathe’s February rotation and her notes – “you should be in peak condition” I laughed out loud. (although, she wrote it “peek”, which made me laugh more.) It does look like a butt kicker…yes, I agree, best not to do with STS. :) How is your Atkins plan going?

It's noon here and time to do something productive...like empty the dishwasher and the cat boxes. Would be cool if I could empty one into the other, but I think my husband would FREAK! We'd be eating on paper plates for the rest of our lives.

Have a great one Warriors.
:D

Janis: The Feb. rotation is fun and challenging. Brutal on the legs. I'm struggling with my eating plan. I felt I was always depriving myself anyway, and now I am depriving myself of "healthy" foods I love, such as oatmeal, yogurt and fruit. I think I'm going to do a couple more days, and then slowly phase in my favorite other foods. I wish I was motivated enough to do it for 6 months, I would be very curious to see how my Dr. tests would read. Cholesterol, etc... I am very tired today too, so that always makes food decisions harder for me.

Thank goodness today is my rest day!

Sounds like a lot of us like step workouts. Kind of surprising because from what I understand, step work-outs are going down in popularity. They are still my favorite though.

Midgetdogg: I understand your BF's competitiveness. I like to win too! But if it's not what you want, don't let it take the fun out of races. Winning is great, but so is the personal feeling of accomplishment. You're a winner already.

Regina: I ordered Supreme90 from Mary at totalfitness. Can't beat 20.00

Hello Warriors,

I was a mia last week. Reading hotel reviews for a weekend getaway to Atlantic City. This weekend we went to AC, Philip golfed and I went and browsed the shops.

Regina does the favorite workout have to be a Cathe workout? My favorite workout tends to change with my moods. Right now it is Zumba live class. I'm now taking it 2 times a week. My other favorites is Physique 57 express and Booty Barre. My fav Cathe workout is LIC.

Mary, I will keep you and Simon in my prayers.

Kim I was asking about the Patrick G workout. I love his personality but he is a tricky one to learn. The first combo on this workout has me stumped.

Donna way to go on the running of the stairs. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Janis what's up with your hip? Did you injure it at some point? I broke my pelvis when I was 19 and it bothers me sometimes, but not too much.

I also used to enjoy step workouts as my cardio more than anything else, but not moving my furniture around, so I don't do them anymore. Cathe has some very fun routines.

I didn't get my STS weight work in last night. I have my best friend from childhood coming to visit me tomorrow and really needed to finish shampooing the rugs. The dogs do a real number on them. But now that I won't die of embarrassment when she walks in, I'm ready to pump tonight!

Janis Coach Jenny does recommend a lot of different methods for training, but for the half marathon, it's a pretty basic training program. One long run a week at 60% - 70% max HR, building your distance by 1 mile a week. Then during the week, you alternate your runs between 65% - 75% max HR and 60%-75%. The first few weeks you're only doing 30 minute runs during the week, then you bump it to 40 minutes - except the day before your long run. That is always just 30 minutes. This week I was up to 7 mile long run, Rest yesterday, 50 minutes today at 65-75%, tomorrow and Friday will be 40 minutes and Saturday is 30 minutes. Friday's run is a 65% - 75% for 40, then after the 5 minute cool-down, there are 4 speed intervals. All out for 30 seconds, with 1 minute walk break between.

I don't exactly follow the plan, since I'm doing an 8k on March 5 and want to have a faster speed, so I'm sort of throwing some 80 - 85% work in once a week. That's where Coach Sean comes in handy. I'm getting the training plan from "Marathoning for Mortals".

Anyway, they posted the results from our climb online. I was 41 out of 185 and the 5th fastest female. I'm pleased.

Hi Everyone

Rehab day - bike 25 minutes, heating pad, isolation exercises and Alisa Wyatt Intermediate Pilates. And 16 push ups.

Donna - my hip. I am rehabing from iliopsoas tendinitis aka hip flexor strain. I also have snapping hip syndrome and low back scoliosis...the combo of the two contributed to my injury. Long story - the injury developed when I started doing kettlebell. I noticed something immediately after my first workout, but ignored it. I continued my aggressive workout schedule - long hill runs and doubling up workouts, then I began a kettlebell intensive. When I re-read my notes from my workout calendar you can see a progression of aches and pains. One day in mid June I was running on the treadmill and experienced a sudden intensely sharp pain in my glute that seared straight through to my inner thigh; I felt like I had been shot with an arrow and it was lodged in my groin. As a matter of fact I turned around to see if my son was standing behind me with his bow. I could barely walk back to the house. I was in a lot of pain. After a few days of hobbling around, barely able to walk, I called the Orthopedic surgeons office for an appt, they couldn't get me in for 3 weeks, but suggested bed-rest. I stayed off of it, mostly in bed, sitting hurt, standing hurt, bearing weight hurt, even crossing one leg over the other at the ankle - while in bed - hurt. I used crutches until I could see the doctor. He was certain I had a stress fracture. I was certain I had a stress fracture. X-rays revealed nothing, he sent me for a bone scan, it showed a lot of inflammation and activity below the groin in the thigh area, but no stress fracture. Doctor offered an MRI, but we both knew whatever the MRI revealed the treatment was the same - time, rest, ibuprofen, rehab, and a slow return to activity. He tried to convince me to take up road cycling. The physical therapist helped a lot, the exercises and instructions on muscular bodily balance and form have been invaluable. When she saw the action of kettlebell swings, the semi-squat thrust forward movement, she said "uh, you're not doing that ever again." She doesn't think I should run hills ever again either, flat terrain only. She also said my injury was 47 years in the making as the tendons in my right hip have not been able to build enough strength to support the muscles in my knees and quad, which explains why despite all my efforts the muscles there were always loose and flabby. She also said that the combination of kettlebell swings and hill running created the perfect storm. There is a possibility that something was torn - as my return is taking longer than any of us thought, but again, treatment is the same - time.

Congrats on 5th fastest female and 41/185 woo-hoo, you rock! I have marathoning for mortals...but remind me...does she work in set-backs...or whatever they are called where every 4 weeks you run a week of shorter runs?

Kimberly - Is your cholesterol high? It is harder to make healthy food choices when you are tired and depleted...I instinctively look for quick fuel. Let us know what you think of Supreme90. I've read Regina's review...just nice to hear others feedback too. $20 is a great deal!

Jenn - Hi! I am happy you popped in to say hello. Window shopping in Atlantic City is a fabulous way to spend the weekend, did you and hubby have a good time?

How did everyone celebrate Valentines Day? My first date with my dh was around valentines day, so it is sort of an anniversary. He made me a sweet card that said, "I kissed Janis 25 years ago" ...it made me cry, he also gave me an armload of roses. Beautiful. :):)

Rowan and I are off to figure out how to exercise him in this rainy windy weather.

Ciao
:D

Good Afternoon Everyone!

Kim- My favorite workout is - Imax2. I like Patrick's workouts. His step routines are complex so I usually just try to learn one combo at a time. I add the combo that I am trying to learn onto the end of another workout. Once I have the combos down, then I do the entire routine. I have a few Turbo Jam workouts and I like them but I prefer Turbo Fire. My favorite Turbo Fires are the HIIT workouts and Fire 45.

Donna - where is your 8k race on 3/5/10? I grew up in the house with 5 brothers and everyone was very competitive. Now that I have given up professional power lifiting and retired from the Army, I pretty much compete against myself.

Kimberly- Let me know when you do any of the Supreme 90 workouts and if you like them.

Jenn - some of your favorite workouts are also among mine. Did you get Vol 2 of Physique 57? I am still trying to decide whether to get it or not. I took some of the classes at the Physique 57 studio and enjoyed them. I also enjoy Zumba live classes

Workout this am- Piloxing- I like this workout. It is fun. It is a little pilates, kickboxing, dance and ballet. It is not overly taxing aerobically but it is different and fun. MY DH saw me doing it this morning and said 'what kind of workout is that?" He thought that it was a pole dance, strip tease workout.

Have a Great Day!

Hi all! This morning I did 30/30 and Core Max 3. We've started letting the cats that come inside, go downstairs and one in particular is loving the chance to go where the dog doesn't. However, she is way less than helpful when you are working out. She especially likes to lay on my mat and attack the remote. And she's the type of cat that when she gets all excited, she gets overly excited and when you try and move her she comes at you with teeth and claws extended. Generally, she's a very sweet cat, but not at that time.

Janis - I figured that's what I was aiming for, but wanted to make sure. I do make a lot of our food from basic ingredients, but there are cereals, breads, etc. that I buy.

Regina - Piloxing certainly sounds interesting! Tell your husband you need a pole before you can start pole dancing. :p

Donna - that's wonderful that you were the 5th fastest female! How cool. Is that an annual thing, so you can do it every year? I'd like to do something like that. My knee LOVES going up stairs, hates going down.

Jenn - glad you had a fun weekend away!

Kimberly - I have to wonder if step is really losing popularity because there are so many more options now? I know that for the longest time I did only step, but now I try to cross train more with MMA and Hiit workouts, too.

Kim - feel free to do my dead lifts for me. :p

Hi Warriors,

Today I did KCM strength premix and then went to Zumba class.

Regina, No I don't have volume 2.

Are any of you signing up for the roadtrips?

Jenn, I would LOVE to be able to go on one of the road trips, but they don't even begin to fit in the budget. :(

This morning was Disk 5 Back and Triceps. I did all the weights it said, but boy was I sure maxed out already on barbell rows. And does anyone else find that underhand rows are way easier for them than overhand? It just seems like a much more natural position.

Janis regards to your question about the scale and energy. I've been hindered by not sleeping well since I started. Scale wasn't budging so I stopped looking. I think a combo of not sleeping well and I was struggling to get my water in every day. Last two days have been better for both, so I'll check the scale again in a few days.

We're going sledding this afternoon. We've been above freezing for the last few days, and some ground is showing, so we'll see how the hill is today. The snow was blowing all around so some areas are noticeably deeper than others. It's also going to be upper 40's, so I'm sure they'll be wanting to dress lighter, but since they'll also be falling off sleds, need to be insulated against the wet. I foresee disagreements occurring. ;)

Hey ladies -

Another night of bad sleep last night. I had my daughter sleeping with me on Monday night and she's HORRIBLE! Kept jamming her knees in my back or draping her legs over me. I was washing her sheets, so I let her sleep in my room. Ugh. Last night it was my boyfriend's night and he wasn't much better. Snoring, knee in my back, stole my pillow too! I need more coffee!

I managed to get Meso 2 Week 1 Chest etc. in last night, and did an easy 40 minute run this morning. Glad I've got piano tonight and no weights, because I'm beat.

Janis yes, Coach Jenny does back off on the distance every few weeks, but once you start going up a mile each Long Run, your back-off week is still a mile longer than the last back-off week. I've got a 4 mile scheduled for Sunday. Not really sure how I want to handle the last 2 weeks of February since I have that 8K on March 5 here in Buffalo.

Sledding sounds fun, Cathy! I haven't been in years because I hate the cold. I let my ex take my daughter, since he insists he's broke and it's free. Hope you have a great time.

Enjoy your day, everyone!

Donna - do you usually workout in the morning?

Cathy - lack of adequate sleep can hinder the scale from moving. I love sledding but have not done so in quite a while.

Jenn- I want to go on the Florida roadtrip but DH thinks that I would spend too much time exercising and not have time for him.

I normally workout in the morning before work but today I did not feel like getting up earlier so I will do my workout this evening. I enjoy my day so much more when I know that my workout is done! I normally do not like to miss my workout time.

Regina: I think your DH is right about the road trip. My husband came with on the Houston road trip, but he came as a full participant. Between the work-outs, the meals, and the visiting, it was pretty much all Cathe all the time. No complaints here! It was unbelievably fun visiting with everyone. It was great being surrounded by people all interested in fitness.

Jenn38: I would love to go to New Jersey, but I am holding out in hopes she comes to Chicago. That would be so much closer for me. We drove to the Houston road trip. THAT was a road trip!

Janis: My cholesterol is higher than it should be. I believe it comes from bad genetics. I certainly exercise enough, and I feel I've been a reasonably healthy eater for 20 some years. More sleep is definitely something we are working on. Just not enough hours in the day. Nothing special for Valetines Day. My husband is not into holidays. I told him way back when we first met that he could skip all occasions, but that meant he had to spoil me everyday!

Midgetdogg: I used to have to move furniture to work out. In the house we are in now, I am lucky enough to have a finished basement all to myself!

Today I had 2 workouts on my schedule. Lower Body Blast this morning. Then after work, we took the dogs for a walk then I did 4DS Kickbox, including legs.

Kimberly

This morning I did Intensity and I so wanted to just toss in the towel after the step segment, but I knew that the rest was easier so I stuck it out. And every time I do it, I'm still surprised at how hard that first section is, and I shouldn't be any longer! I followed that up with Butts & Guts Stability Ball Abs.

Kimberly that's very cool that you and your husband went on the road trip together! Chicago would be closest to me to, but short of winning the lotto, which is hard when you don't play the lotto, I'll be passing on that, too.

Donna, I still sleep with the boys if Derek isn't feeling well, but it's definitely not restful. My youngest tends to move all over and sleep in really odd places on the bed. He takes after my sister and I seem to recall refusing to sleep with her after a certain age, because she'd just end up across the pillows!

Sledding yesterday was different. The guy who is in charge said he was probably going to close it at the end of the day. The small hill for little kids was still ok, but the big hill was only usable on the south side and apparently there was a large puddle of water on the other side at the bottom. They only wore sweatshirts to begin with and soon ditched those for T-shirts. And of course the temptation to walk in the icy water was just too much and they did that, which meant that for Derek the water was over his boots, so his feet got doused with ice water. He stuck it out, but by the end he was really cold and admitted that walking in the water had been a bad idea. I'd like to think that the next time such a situation comes up he'll remember what happened, but it's pretty doubtful. This afternoon we're off to the planetarium.

Cathy- How was your trip to the Planetarium? My DH and one of my brothers are really into astronomy. DH and my brother both have a large telescope on the deck. We often go to the Hayden Planetarium and I love their dome shows. The first time that I did Cathe's 'Intensity," I disliked it because it is full of moves that she has used in many of her other workouts, but it has grown on me some since then.

Kimberly- I am trying to convince DH to go on the road trip with me. He did STS, P90X and Supreme 90 with me, so I think that he may enjoy the road trip. He does not want to be the only male there. How many men were on the road trip in Houston? My husband is not into the holiday either but I must say that so many days are special days with him. He is always full of surprises! Even though we have been married many years, things are still exciting!

workout this am- Tracie Long-- Break Through and Trudie Styler- Yoga Express
workout last night- STS- Total Body

Have a great day!

Your husband should definitely sign up with you. I believe there were only 3 fully participating men at the Houston road trip, all of them were husbands. None of them seemed to mind that they were such a minority. Kind of gave them a celebrity status.

We decided to go only 6 weeks before the event. My husband is an avid exerciser, but not to videos. I gave him a bunch of my Cathes, and he practiced. He did choose to focus on the kickbox and bootcamp ones. He did not feel he could fully learn the step videos. He did participate in the step classes, but sometimes had to just do his own thing. It worked out good though because of the 6 classes, only 1/2 hour of two of them included step. (I wish there had been more, as that's my favorite).

My husband had a great time, and is just as excited as me to go again!!

Kimberly
