Working out after work?

How do you do it? When I come home from work I'm just tired and hungry and the last thing I want to do is workout. How do you get yourself to workout after work?

I look at it as my way of relieving any stress from the day. I sometimes would love to have my workout over, but I have found that when I do workout in the morning (which is VERY, VERY rare), I sorta miss my workout after work.

I don't have kids though, so my time after work is just that, mine:) I find that if I have something to eat about an hour and a half before I get off, I'm full of energy and obviously, not hungry. Plus, I read all day long about everyone else's tremendous workouts here and that also gives me an extra push.

I know, I'd love to always get my workouts done before work, but having downstairs neighbors, sometimes it's way too early to be doing Cathe and not be evicted. So, my best advice is to make sure that you drink plenty of water all day, and that you have a snack BEFORE you leave work. Something around 200 calories, a mix of quality carb and protein. Think veggies and tofu, soy, chicken, etc. Or fruit and yogurt. Oatmeal made with milk and a few walnuts and berries thrown in.
Kashi makes a new make in the microwave hot grain/oatmeal cereal, comes in individual packets (vanilla and cinnamon are the two flavors). They each have 150 calories, 2g of fat, 26 carbs, 5 grams of fiber only 7 grams of sugar, and 8 grams of protein. Make w/ 1 half cup of soymilk or reg. milk (it calls for more liquid, but it's too soupy for me that way). Yummy, hot, quick. I like the Honey and Cinnamon better than the Vanilla. This way, you've had the snack, it's started to digest so your stomach is not too full and you are getting the energy from the food.
Hope this helps,
Mattea

I forgot to add, then you just MAKE yourself do it until it is a habit. Start with your favorite workouts, or ones that you perceive as being "easier." This will help get you into it

Same way as if it were morning...once I get going, I'm into my workout. I just don't let myself really sit down and relax if I have the procastination feeling :)

I agree...do the fun workouts, where the fun workout clothes, whatever it takes to add the fun factor.

I always work out after work too. Usually, I start dinner, do some errands - like laundry, housework, then go workout. It becomes routine. When the workout is done, I'm starving, and dinner is waiting and ready to go. I do get home about 4 though and we eat around 6:30 - 7pm. If I arrived home later this would probably be a difficult time to workout.

I have no energy in the morning and 5:45 is early enough for me. I'm definitely a night person and don't usually hit the sack until midnight.

I guess it becomes part of what you do.... On weekends I'll workout before my shower which is usually late morning. I just need to relax and drink coffee when I first wake up. I really don't feel "up" until after my shower.

I can't imagine working out in the morning. I have zero energy or concentration. At night I make dinner and then workout a couple hours after that. But I also stay up late so it works for me!!:)

Hi.

I no longer need to do this as I am a SAHM now but for 3 years I worked out after work! I never did it RIGHT after work as I was always too hungry for that. If I could have come home, changed and gotten right into my work out it probably would have been easier but I needed to eat supper and then wait about an hour before my work out. It was hard at times because after working all day, cooking dinner, etc., lots of times I just wanted to flop down in front of the computer, the tv, or in bed but I forced myself to move and after the first 5-10 minutes I was fine.

I have been a SAHM for 6 months now so I have been working out during the day (around noon time) most of the time. There are occasional times though when I just can't fit it in and I wait until after dinner and now that I am not in that habit anymore it can be SUPER tough to find the motivation but still, I just make it happen.

Don't think about it....JUST DO IT!:)

That's the only advice I can give!;)

I start work early, 6:30 on my regular schedule, 3:30 when I'm working overtime, so a morning w/o is pretty much out for me. When I get off work at 3, since I work at home, I go right into my workout. It is easier for me though since my kids are grown now and living on their own and DH works out of town during the week, so it's just me. Still I feel I have more energy in the afternoons to put towards my workout. I have worked out in the mornings though, it's okay but I prefer the p.m.

I usually don't work out after work - I do it in the early AM as a rule - but if I DO work out afte work, I have to do it as soon as I hit the door or it's too easy to not do it at all. I have better success working out in the morning because less things get in the way.

Just Do It! :)

I do the same as everyone else- I eat a small snack at work (usually a yogurt with kashi crunch mixed in) and then when i get home, I let the dogs out, read the mail, and get to work. Some days it is REALLLLY hard, but you try. Don't get hard on yourself if you miss a day here or there. :) - Tina

I find it harder to do this time of year because it's already dark when I come home! But, to get into the mood, I immediately change into my workout clothes, maybe have a snack while I watch a 30-minute show on TV (don't get hooked into an hour show or, even worse, a 2-hour movie, because by that time, the motivation may be killed). Then I set up my area (step, weights, whatever I'm going to be using while the DVD I'm going to work out to plays in the background.

ANother option is to have some kind of meal replacement bar in your car and eat it on the way home so you aren't "starving."

Also, since I'm a p.m. showerer, I might as well get sweaty before I shower to make it worth my while!

On my good days, I come straight home, check e-mail and phone messages, have a small snack if needed, and change into my workout clothes quickly so I can get started. I do sometimes wait until later in the evening and lately have been working out later than I ususally do. I am on winter break for a couple of weeks so I will be able to workout at my convenience for a while. I am learning that I can take an unscheduled rest day when I'm just too tired and I don't let that turn into several days. The unscheduled rest day seems to help me with the rest of my workouts that same week. When I know I will be getting home late or have an unusually busy schedule I have gotten up very early to fit my workouts in...but that is rare and difficult since my body is now used to p.m. workouts.

I also think aobut how great I feel after a workout and a nice, hot shower.
Good luck to ya!
