Wish me luck, people

In about 15 minutes, DH and I are going to be leaving to go to a production of that uber-Broadway classic "Oklahoma!" . . . performed by a local middle school class and starring the 13-year-daughter of some friends of ours.

Think of it: The Bald One, after three particularly brutal weeks at work, sitting for a very . . . long . . . time . . . watching a gaggle of oily, squeaky, shapeless first-teens mangle marginal songs and an even more questionable libretto.

Come to think of it, don't wish me luck - pray for me. Break out the beads, hit your knees and pray that the A-Jock makes it out alive.

See, this is karma for all the piano recitals my parents had to endure when I was a kid.

TIA -

A-Jock

Ugh, A-Jock...I feel your pain. As one who has sat through many grade school and middle school drama production's....I'd sooner have my fingernails pulled off then have to endure the pain of watching yet another dismal performance. And I will have to...just like you.

Ugh.

I feel your pain too! I sat through my DD having a MINOR role in the products of Babes in Arms - which is LONG too! That was a middle school production, too. Why don't they make them nice and short - easier on the kids and the parents!

I'll break out the Rosary, and say chants and all! Dare I say it? Oh I have to - HAVE FUN!!!

(for me the payback was concerts - I was in the band since 4th grade - now DD is in choir which is good, but the middle school band makes me shudder)

I have been subjected to 3 hour long dance recitals for my neices a couple of times...I know how awful it can be...I also had to drive 2 hours there and 2 hours home since they live in upstate ny! NOT FUN! :p

Christine, one of my kids is in middle school chorus and it isn't that the kids sound so bad...it is the music selection that the teacher comes up with. A 45 minute concert seems to go on and on and on and on and on and....you feel like you've been there your entire life by the time it's over. And then you have to pretend to have enjoyed it when your dd asks you..."So, was it a good concert, Mom"?

Arrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!

Oh my. I hate musicals...I always want them to stop that incessant singing. I shot one up to the big guy for you. Now go, and just know that we are here for you when it's over.

Michele

Fortunately, the music selection is decent actually in our school. Her teacher is fabulous. My problem is that I have perfect pitch - okay relative pitch - it's not natural, it's learned (I'm a musician myself - saxophone), and anything off key is like nails on a chalk board to me. The choir is okay - the band is beginner band - so they are pretty off key...

Bless you my dear. Maybe you can place yourself in some meditative state during the performance......ommmmmmmmmm

I am soooo happy the local theatre production of the Wizard of Oz my DSs are in is NOT a muscial.

AJock, you have my complete sympathy. I was recently incarcerated...er, in attendance...at my niece's middle school (& exactly what does "middle school" mean??) talent show. Every child participated. Let me re-state that. EVERY CHILD PARTICIPATED.
I'm still in recovery.
I shall most certainly light a candle for you & place it on my step.

A-jock,

I didn't know you played the piano. I wanted to take piano lessons so bad when I was a kid! You have to play a song at our next get together!

Hi Shelley,
I'm working my way back into the world slowly but (I hope) surely. Seeing the lime cat made me smile.
How are you???

Say it isn't so!!
NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Having no children of my own, not long ago I had the pleasure of sitting thru a 3 hour middle school christmas program. We heard the concert band, the orchestra (think of the sound of dying cats), untold numbers of singing groups, the flutaphone group, the xylophone group, some kind of drum group, etc, etc. I think the whole school performed - twice. Having spent all of my youth in just about every musical group there is, I called up my mother after the concert and thanked her. She never missed any of my performances growing up and it must have been torture for her to sit thru (especially in those early years). Us kids at the time thought we sounded great. After the concert Mom would always gush (um, lie) about how good she thought we were too. Then she got to go home and listen to my sister and I practice our music lessons. Thinking back on it, Mom was a saint.

RE: WITH YOUR PRAYERS, I SURVIVED

Just got back. On our hands and knees. We had to drive an elderly couple related to our friends to and from the performance.

Mercifully, this rendition of "Ucklahoma" was beyond abridged - I think they cut out every third word and every other song to bring the running time down to about 1:05. Still, it was painful and poignant. Were we EVER that young?

Jo-Jo, my piano-playing days are long behind me. The first movement of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" stayed in my fingers for years after I stopped taking lessons (I almost mistyped that as "lesions") but that one has evapped as well.

Thanks for all your sym/empathy, people. I thought I was in Childless Curmudgeon Mode. Now I know it's a universal thing.

A-Jock
