Will Spinning Hurt My Feet?

I've been thinking about getting a spinning bike because my feet have been giving me problems since January. First it was the heel and now it is the ball of the foot. Yes, I've been to a doctor. I LOVE high impact but I don't think my feet can take it any more. I NEED to sweat buckets...that's what makes me feel great. I know spinning is a great workout but I don't want to buy a bike if it will further aggrevate my feet. I am not able to join a gym at this time.

Any words of wisdom?

So sorry to hear about your feet!! That really can put a damper on your fitness activities...but all is not lost...you can still work out hard and sweat a ton.

I've been a Spinning Instructor for several years now and have yet to hear one client tell me it caused their feet to hurt...yes to their private areas hurting for the first few sessions if proper alignment wasn't in order but not the feet.

Many gyms have specials this time of year so you can give it a try before investing in a Spin Bike... you can see your reaction and interest for yourself. Google gyms in your area to see what is out there...many gyms have 30 days for $20.11 which is well worth the investment! If all is well, you may also want to invest in Spin shoes but that will be the end of the expense!!

Happy Spinning...it is awesome!!!

I agree with Gillian, spinning won't hurt your feet. Right now my foot is hurting from a crash on my bike, and spinning is the only thing that makes it feel okay. Although, I don't have a spin bike, my road bike is on a trainer and I clip in with my road shoes. That was my only problem, my right foot (the one I hurt) was swollen and it was hard to get into my shoe. You should go to MotionTraxx.com they have some amazing free downloads for spinning, or use CardioCoach.com love that stuff!

I struggled with running due to bursitis and a bone spur on my heel. Spinning was the only cardio I could do for a while. I would strongly recommend biking shoes with clips though. You will get a better workout and the stiffness of the shoe will help your foot. Before I got my shoes, the spin bike would hurt my arches if I wore regular gym shoes.

I am going to be the dissenting opinion here. I also am a Spinning instructor and I have injuries to the balls of both of my feet. Spinning makes my feet nuts. In fact I have had to give up all spinning since my injuries this summer. I have tried it both with spinning shoes and in a fit of desperation with tennis shoes with my heels on the pedals. I think that gillianorr had some great advice to try a temporary gym membership or find a spin class to see if your feet can handle the spinning.

Good luck.

I agree with NRG Woman that spinning could hurt your feet. You should definitely try some classes before investing in a spin bike to see. I do fine with spinning shoes, but my feet hurt if I wear regular tennis shoes. Especially if you are spending any amount of time out of the saddle. The extra support I get with spinning shoes works for me though.

Thank you all very much Ladies. It looks like I've got some thinking to do. I wish I could go to a gym to try it out but I can't do it at this time in my life.

Thanks again for your words!

You didn't say what, if any, diagnosis your feet have been given, but I have plantars fasciitis and my MD advised against spinning, saying that it could aggravate my feet.

Just to second what Elaine said, my DH had PF and spinning kills his feet. Good luck finding something you can do.
