Will I lose muscle mass?

Cathe,
I have been doing rotations for heavy strength training since around June of this year doing either one or two body parts a day using Gym Style and Slow & Heavy and at least 1/2 hr. to 45 min. of cardio 4 days a week. I have gained some good muscle mass/tone and I was wondering if I would lose that doing your November rotation? I feel my body needs a break from all the heavy lifting I've been doing, but I'm fearful that I will lose muscle tone and strength. What is your take on this?

Thanks!

Hi Debbie,

Well, I sure don't look like you. ha ha. :D You look great, btw! I have been doing mostly S&H and GSL for awhile now, and was wondering the same thing. I have definitely seen a change all for the good. I was just telling my check-in buddies yesterday that I've noticed muscles I never knew I had! LOL!:D

Would adding a body part per day defeat the rotations purpose? That's what I was thinking of doing.

Debbie,

I'm so glad you posted this because I am wondering about this too. I've been doing strength training and putting in about the same amount of cardio as you have and love the results. I've been eating as close to nature as possible too (so-called "clean eating") and I don't want to lose the definition I have.

So we're balancing two ideas here :vary the type of workout to see consistent gains versus "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Great question, and one that I was thinking of posting myself. I have been doing the Gym Style for the last 4 weeks and am now moving on to the PS series. I am seeing some great strength gains and definition. So this is something that I have been pondering also.

I'm not Cathe, but I just wanted to say you look incredible!!! What kind of cardio do you do? Oh and I don't think it would hurt your muscle tone, it's only for a month, right? Not sure though but you look great!!

Not Cathe here, but I would think you probably would lose a litte bit of the strength. But with that said, I think it is really good to mix it up a little now and then. You look like you have a lot of muscle mass and you do pretty heavy weights. Like someone else said, it is only for a month and you could just use this month as more of a cardio month but still keeping some muscle tone. Your body is so strong that I don't think it would take long to get back the small amount you lose. I know that it is hard to do something new when you have come so far.

Debbie,
For a break....how about considering doing 2 weeks of the the November rotation then going back to your regular rotation for 2 weeks and then finish out the November rotation. It would stretch the November rotation to 6 weeks....but you won't lose any muscle gains ;-) and your get your reprieve. I think that's how I would do it.

Just a thought,

I think you are safe. There's a point of diminishing returns when it comes to heavy strength training and staying with it in the long run isn't always the right thing do. Chaning up your workouts actually gets muscle to respond again when it adapts to a regular type of work which can cause gains to level out and put you in a plateau whee you see no results any way. You can follow a new rotation and maintain muscle mass quite nicely and will lose it only if you don't use it. :)

Hi Debbie! I think taking a break is an excellent idea and you will come back to your heavy lifting so much stronger. You have been lifting heavy now for 5 months. A break to let muscles respond in new ways and recovery actively is in order. Enjoy! :)
