Will I ever "get" the choreography??

Argh! Maybe I'm expecting too much of myself! I used a couple Cathe step tapes years ago, got lazy in general, but just tried Body Max again last week. No real problems there, I loved it. But today I tried Low Impact Circuit, and the 2nd round of stepping just had me all flummoxed. Step, step, turn (behind the step??) step step turn, ending up on the other end but on which foot....? I've slowed the player down to 1/4 speed, and I still can't get it. Maybe it's because I had a stressful day, and I was tired? Or maybe I'm dense? is there some sort of cheat sheet to the steps, like those old dance-step things from Arthur Murray? I need help!

RE: Will I ever

Preview it a few more times, walk it through without the step, and actually say it like you just wrote it. You will get it. And, when you do, it might be your favourite. If you can do BMX2, you can do LIC.

Hang in there!!

I don't know if this will help you or not, but there's an interesting site with some moves listed on it. Click a move and it will explain and show you how it's done (it's not every move Cathe will do, though). It's at http://www.turnstep.com/Moves/index.html

When I'm learning tricky choreography it helps if I just do a little bit at a time. Like when I was learning Rhythmic Step, I'd just try one combo at a time and maybe tack it onto the end of my regular workout. I would just focus on learning each little piece of the combo until I got it down. I also don't try to learn new choreography on a day I'm tired or not quite motivated enough to have patience with it. Maybe try it on a day you feel completely fresh and up for a challenge. I find LIC to be really fun and I hope you can enjoy it some day, too!

RE: Will I ever

When first learning, just zone in on the feet. Everything else does not matter, it is feet, feet feet. I just finished LIC, and watching her feet you always turn IN toward the step to start your walk. So when walking to the left, you are facing your TV, turning in, makes you lead right. If you start that move with the right foot, you will be OK because the turns do not switch your feet, it is a walking move.

So walking left, turn IN and lead right. Walk right, turn IN and lead left. Try it slowly, walk, walk turn, walk walk turn with out the video and see if itmakes sense.

RE: Will I ever

I still have a hard time with the walk-walk-turns. I don't know if the rhythm just feels off for me or what. I do know that when I come off the step for the first walk, I put my foot out away from my body instead of just stepping down with my feet together. I don't know if that makes sense, but it seems to work for me.

RE: Will I ever

Trust me - no one is more inept than me when it comes to step moves, but I DO eventually get them.

You will, too. Keep plugging away. :)

RE: Will I ever

I'm so uncoordinated that I had a horrible time just doing the "slap and claps" that turn up on a few of the videos. You know, slap your thighs and then clap as you step off behind? How sad is that?!

BUT...by learning a combo at a time, I can now do all of Cathe's choreography with little thought (which makes the work so much more fun). It will come for you too. One thing that helps me a lot is reminding myself that the footwork is always natural: right, left, right, left, etc. If I'm turning and then stepping, I know I have to step or turn with whatever foot would naturally be next. Does that make sense? I'm not going to step with my right, but turn to the left. Well, it makes sense to me anyway!

RE: Will I ever

Funny, I did that one Saturday too. :)

I CANNOT get any kind of walking/turning at all. Ever. I just walk & don't turn. I don't think it takes away from the workout at all, other than maybe being slightly less dancy & fun. But hey, whatever gets you through the DVD.......;-)

RE: Will I ever

For me help to count it out. Each portion of a step routine is based on a count of 32 - or 4 sets of 8 counts each. For example a step knee would be one-two - one when you step up and raise your knee, two when you step off. All new moves start on odd numbers and finish on even. For the more complicated moves, I'll watch it carefully and count it out, then try it. It does help - but I still stumble a lot. It's okay - the higher the learning curve, the greater the sense of accomplishment.

RE: Will I ever

I am amazed at how Cathe does this and teaches us using the opposite leg for herself, and the music, all that goes into this, How does she pick out the music? I wish I could teach and do this.
I am amazed at myself for being able to pick this up.
I used to get so frustrated, now I realize this takes a few rounds of practice and just doing it.
When I can listen and hear her cues and not look up at the TV.
It feels so good and is fun. Each time that you do the same workout
tape. The better you will become. Just keep doing it.
Didn't mean to but in.

Christine,
I hate to sound like a bratty know-it-all, but actually the count is one-two when you step up and lift your knee (one for the step up, two for the knee lift), and three-four when step back down with each foot. Sorry to butt in.....

RE: Will I ever

Ok, the WEIRDEST thing happened yesterday!! I went to do LIC, and when that section with the step step turn came up....I-just-did-it!! I hadn't even practiced more, it was just like my feet took over, and ta-da! :7

Thanks everybody for all your help, and I love that turnstep site too!!:)
