Why don't people understand?

I'm trying to teach that concept (diet as a lifestyle choice) to my children (ages 3 and 5)...
It is so hard. They already attach "all or nothing" meanings to the words diet, healthy, snack.... Overall, I'm pleased with how well they eat and the choices they make (my 3 year old is particularly good at eating only what she wants/needs and will ask for seconds on fruits and veggies and completely turn down sweets). But it does get challenging when my 5 year old thinks he can't ever have meat or treats because they aren't healthy!!!

I'm just looking to teach the balance and choices! Katie

"Bodily exercise profiteth little".....Ugggg...

My friend from church says that to me all the time!! And while it IS in the Bible, I find her recital completely annoying!! So, what, I should eat like crap, not exercise, thereby not take care of my body, which God gave me??? Oh my.... Let's just say I understand your frustrations. So few people really GET IT. But, we must keep plugging away!!! :) :)

RE: Donna, here's my favorite...

You know, I never ran accross that in the Bible, and I am in NO WAY contradicting the Word, but possibly the inventions of Baskin Robbins, Pizza Hut and McDonald's and oh yes, let's not forget my very favorite, cheesecake were not forseen, or should I say, the overindulgence of these was not forseen, so bodily exercise was thought unnecessary. Plus, they worked a lot harder physically back in those days! Carrying around huge boulders has to be the equivalent to tons of overhead presses! Digging and such was also very manual labor. We got softer over the ages, a lot softer!
Just a thought! :)

RE: Donna, here's my favorite...

It's possible to prove nearly any point using the bible, and it's usually done OUT OF CONTEXT. I wouldn't listen to whoever said that because she/he is just looking for an excuse NOT to exercise. Right?

RE: And...

I certainly love the Bible and I will leave it at that.

I can't remember the name of the hormone that is released from our brain when we exercise. Somebody help me out. Anyway, that hormone makes me a much happier, more friendly, and relaxed person. Without exercise and that hormone release, I am a much grouchier, self-centered, whiny person. Thousands of years ago, people naturally released this hormone thru daily living because they had to work so hard. Now that we have it relatively easy (physically), our bodies still need that hormone release. I figure if God put that hormone there to be released which provides natural stress relief, then I should take advantage of this gift he gave me. In fact, wouldn't I be silly not to take advantage of it?!

RE: There are dark days ahead

I can't add much to this wonderful discussion that hasn't already been said. But I too grapple with frustration on a daily basis, especially at work, where I am the only consistent exerciser (and group fitness instructor) in the joint. Sometimes the comments are chiding, some teasing, some bewildered, some clueless, and a precious few admiring - but they never stop coming.

We are in a sick culture, my friends, one that rewards consumption, removes any need to move physically in daily activities, and yet at the same time despises body fat not because of health implications but because of aesthetics.

What we Cathe Crowdettes are is lonely - because consistent exercisers make up only about 20% of the American population, we don't find like-minded people very often. So we come here, and thanks again to Cathe for creating this forum! We need the association we get here, one that rewards and encourages effort, because we sure ain't gonna get it out in the general population.

I think the sedentary epidemic, of which obesity is only the most visible manifestation, is only going to get worse, in spite of cute little squibs on NBC and "60 Minutes" that have been on recently. So let's stick together, and let go of trying to carry the message to people who willfully don't get it!

Exactly!!!...

They worked their hineys off oh so long ago!

And a little FYI...it's 1 Timothy 4:8!!! ;-)
I looked up exercise in my concordance, and it mentions the word ascetics..which means one who practices rigid self-denial, esp. as a religious act!

Where's my Valentine's candy...... LOL

Oh, I don't listen to that...

And yes, it's just an excuse for her to not exercise. Believe me, I have to just look at her stupidly and smile, lest I say something not-so-nice!!!!

RE: There are dark days ahead

Don't forget that Bible also says that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made," and in God's image no less!

Sixty-one percent of the population is overweight. Never have we had the opportunity to live so long so healthily. But that says nothing about the smokers and folks who aren't necessarily overweight but don't exercise or eat carefully.

My husband was talking about some guys at work who were taliking about the perils of being overweight but who eat fast food all the time. I had to be the bearer of the bad news that someone would have to gain 150 lbs to get close to his risks since he smokes. I also have a sister who smokes, drinks half and half and consumes up to 18 sodas a day. And will not hear a word about how unhealthy she is! The list goes on and on!
Happy Valentine's Day!

It is truly amazing isn't it?! My friend is writing an article for Shape magazine that will follow her weightloss story for a year. She and I have discussed how it is that people can't hear the idiocy of such comments as this one made to her upon hearing that she was writing the article (working with a nutritionist, personal trainor, therapist and more) - "Oh - you're GOING to look so nice!" They thought it was a compliment.

All I can say is..."Open mouth, insert foot (ankle, calf, thighs and whatever else seems to fit) and proceed to chew!"

I am an athlete

LAST EDITED ON Feb-15-02 AT 11:24AM (Est)[p]athlete- A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts. (dictionary.com)

This is what I think of my "exercise thing". Simply put I think of myself as an athlete. I don't participate in competitive sports (yet!), but I think that life is the greatest and most difficult sport of them all. How can a Cathe exerciser not think of herself/himself as an athlete while panting and sweating to videos like Cardio Kicks, MIC, Interval Max and Power Max? How can a Cathe exerciser not feel strong after finishing a PS or S&H video, MIS, LL etc? People can't understand what they don't know. They have no idea of how hard we work. I was reading the other day that people think high of those who workout as long as you don't get a lot into it or talk about it 24/7. So if people ask I don't go into details. I might mention I work out a couple of days a week and that's about it. But the constant questions get annoying after a while. I really don't get into detailed conversations about what foods I eat, and what exercises I do and they get the idea.

I really hate the fact that people think exercise is a temporary thing. That people do it and quit after awhile. Most people do. But us Cathe followers know better. Right now as we watch the Winter Olympics we can see that fitness comes in different sizes. Small, Medium and Large strong and muscular frames. I may never compete in any Olympics, but I feel that I train and eat like the olympic competitors do and I'm proud of it.

PS My body is my temple and that's why I take care of it. If I don't nobody else will. I don't think God would want us to be lazy and eat like gluttons.

Well said, Rose!

You're right! We're responsible for our own health. Speaking of which....I'm off to do Powermax!! :-jumpy

I don't talk about my diet/exercise to anyone - I doubt even my mother realizes what I do - except to comment on how 'thin' I'm getting (yeah, right, ma - 5/7", 150 lbs. is not thin!).
I occasionally get the "have you lost weight?" question - I just smile and say, "no, I've just been working out - but thanks for noticing!" (It's the truth - I'm at the same weight, but 2 sizes smaller.) If they ask me if I'm on a 'diet', I'll say no, I've just been working out.
I never mention 'diet' because everyone's always looking for an 'easy' way to lose weight - and they think diets are easier than working out. So, though I have changed my way of eating, it's not a diet in their sense of the word, so I don't mention it. I'm not going to change the way they think in a 10 second conversation, so I'll just let them assume I'm doing it the 'hard' way by working out.
Unless they specifically ask for details - then watch out! I'll give them an earful...

Your friend should read the whole paragraph that passage comes from (here's the [link:www.bible.gospelcom.net/bible?passage=1TIM+4&language=english&version=NIV&showfn=off&showxref=off|NIV version,] here's the [link:www.bible.gospelcom.net/bible?passage=1TIM+4&language=english&version=KJV&showfn=off&showxref=off|King James)]see verse 8, but read the whole thing.

It's saying that physical discipline is only the surface of the real discipline, and that in later times people will say that vegetarianism and other ascetic practices are the only ways to get close to God, but that they will be missing the point. This passage is especially meaningful to those of us who do appreciate the value of good self-discipline!

Gotta love that Bible.

Everyone is looking for a quick fix. Once I am asked the how question I say prety much what you say. They all look at me (every single one of them) and say...."I can't give up the food". Eveyone is looking for a quick fix, that's why all these cheesy gimicks are selling very well year after year. My husband always say's when people ask him how I did it, (NOT that I'm "there" yet), but he say's "It's a lifesytle change" and "she works very hard". People loose interest real quick. We are all creatures of habit and don't want to change what's comfortable... good or bad. It's a sad thing really.

That's why those stupid ab belts are selling so well....a no sweat, no effort way to get in shape. I have to laugh. Like the people in my church who are selling weighted shoes that are supposed to raise your metabolism 25%! Don't we all wish?!
