What size dumbells do you ladies use?

I bought a barbell set last night - yeah! finally after using dumbells for so long. I also picked up some new dumbells. Out of curiosity, what range of weights are you using?

I have 5, 8, 15 and 20 dumbbells. I've been looking for 12 pound ones-no luck so far. I'm interested in adjustable dumbbells. Pros and cons on those.

My Troy barbell loads up to 60 but 50# is the max so far that I've lifted safely over my head.

I use everything from a 4# dumbell for the last set of front raises and tricep kickbacks to maintain meticulous form in PUB (for the first sets I use 5#) to a 30# dumbell for one arm rows and pullovers (MM and GS). I need a rack for my dumbells, I try to keep them tidy but still find myself tripping over them or hunting for the right one when I want it in a hurry.

The amount of weight I use (and anyone) depends entirely on the workout. There are some workouts and exercises, like Jari Love's shoulder work, where I will use 3#. Others, like P90X lat rows, where I can use 35#.

I have weights that range from 2# (for shoulder rehab work and some functional workouts) to one 35# dumbell (for 1-arm lat rows, so I don't need a second one!).

I hope you don't fall into the trap of thinking, "Wow, X, Y and Z use ### pounds, so I should too" or get discouraged because you are using less weigh than others.

It takes time to work up to the 'big weights' and you will gradually buy more weights as you need them (like I had to get my 35# weight when I got into P90X). At the very beginning of my home workout training, I just had a set of Heavy hands that I could adjust from 1 to 3 to 5#. Then I added weights to get to 7#, then 10#....

why are # signs next to the number weights. Like 7#? Wow, you would think since I'm a teen I would know slang and appreviation talk:p :p .LOL

Adri,

The # sign when talking about weights means pounds. So, 35# means 35 pounds.

I think it's great that you're so interested in fitness at your age. Good for you! Keep up the good work!

Hi Adri:) # stands for pounds or lbs.

Laurie:)

oops...posted at the same time as Suz:)....now I'm wondering Adri, what do the boxes below your signature represent?:)

Db ranging from 3-45lbs a set of adjustable db set at 60lbs a piece -a small barbell set at 40lbs a medium bb set at 74lbs and a bb set at 110 lbs.And more wts to add.I have collected alot over the 15years of workout:p

I have 5#, 8#, and 12# (and then I can use the 12 and 3 or 5 together --not the most comfortable hand position, but it works for now). Hoping to work myself up to higher weights though.

I have 3, 5, 8, 10, &15# dumbbells. Like Kathryn, I use different weights for different workouts and body parts. Those work well for me. I've been encouraged to go heavier, but have yet to bite the bullet.LOL.

I have 3-15's, but my barbell set came with little bars that you can put the barbell weights on to use as adjustable dumbells. I use those when going heavier than 15. Maybe you can find some that will fit you barbell weights.

I also have 5,8, 10 and 15. I wanted 12# but my dh said no go heavy and get 15#. I want a bb but don't want to spend the $$.

I actually have from 1 lb to 52.5 lbs. I have 2 adjustable sets so the possiblities seem endless. I also have Bowflex Select Tech Dumbells (which I use mostly) that go from 5 lb to 52.5 lbs. I'd say for me 5-25 lbs get the most use these days...:)

Hi Deana! I did PUB this morning using 5#, 8# and 10#. I was thinking I might need to go up in # on some exercises, but when I took my shower, I could barley use my arms to wash my hair, lol ;)
