what do you think of when swimming laps?

>What do I think of ... If I am alone in the water, I usually
>count my arm strokes and listen to my heart beat. If there is
>someone in the next lane swimming, I am usually thinking about
>swimming better then they are.

teehee depending on who is in the next lane, I could be thinking about not getting hit in the head or kicked in the stomach!

Sometimes I like to concentrate on my stroke and feeling the muscles work. I know exactly how many strokes it takes me to get from one end to the other, depending on what equipment I'm using at the time. If I'm really tired though, it will be one or two more, and if I'm feeling very energetic, one or two less. but normally it's always the same.
Usually I don't care about swimming better than anyone else, since it's almost always the same people every day. BUT sometimes a new person comes in and will make a big splash and take off at the same time (another pet peeve) swim fast for one or two lengths and then gasp for breath while I just keep going and going and going. I always know who is going to do this before they even get in the pool, even if I've never seen them before.

There are a few really competitive swimmers at my pool, and I love to try to keep up with them. I find when they are not there, I tend to have a slower paced work out. I love the challenge!!!! And I don't do a bad job keeping up.

Do you have a waterproof MP3 player?. I looked at them when they first came out, but they were kind of pricey. Are you happy with yours?

You can buy a waterproof pack to put it in. I had one years ago for my cassette player (that dates me). I can't use it though because I'm prone to ear infections and MUST wear earplugs; I have to wear them even when I shower.

setting goals makes me want to go back to see if i can beat it.

There is no one size for every gym. Most YMCAs that I have been to are 75 feet (25 yards) but not all. I've been to some Y's that are 60 feet. Some pools are 50 meters, which is over 150 feet. Every one is potentially different. If you want to know for a particular gym, you have to ask them. And never, ever accept a claim of "oh, we have an OLYMPIC sized pool". I've seen "Olympic" sized pools from 50 feet all the way to 50 meters (over 150 feet).
An Olympic sized pool is just that - the size used in the Olympic games. And that is 50 meters, nothing else.

PS just wanted to add that when you measure distance, it's never measured in feet, it's always in either yards or meters.

This is why Masters requires the meet hosts to measure a pool if it is to be sanctioned for records. Too many variable sizes.

i also consider that or other people. sometimes one area seems warmer than the other. i next time i will bring a ruler to figure out the length of the pool.

Are you thinking it's warmer because someone peed? Usually you will see it if it just happened. If it's warmer in some spots, generally it's because that area is closer to the water jets. I cannot imagine any adult lap swimmer doing this. If they did and anyone else were in the pool, you would see the yellow....just like when kids do it.

As far as the length of your pool, why not just ask?
What kind of gym is it? Any place that takes its swimming seriously will know.

My Mp3 player is an Oregon Scientific and they are not pricey. Actually you can get one with a twice the memory of mine (can't remember what mine is right now) for what I paid 2 or 3 years ago. It is well worth it! Finis makes one that looks like the sound is better than the OS.
