what do you do when stressed

I run when I'm stressed! The more stressed I am, the more I run. That's why stress makes me lose more weight than I should. Fortunately, my stress level is down further than it has been in a couple of years and I've been able to keep my weight up! :D

It depends where I am. If I'm at work, then bite size candy bars or trail mix are on my hit list. If I'm at home, I will pummel an imaginary boxing bag . I've also been known to "vent" while I'm driving.}(

I'm sorry to hear your struggles lesliemarie. Stress can do terrible things to our minds and bodies and it is difficult to control. Aren't you the one that suffers from fibromyalgia? I think you responded when I was talking about my chronic fatigue from the west nile virus. Things like that certainly don't make it easy.

I also find a good book great for stress relief. As far as exercise could you do some pilates or core work? Sometimes I have trouble with my ankle and have to stay off it. I do more upper body then.

I'm curious about this...how does taking laxatives help you when you're stressed? Any time I've taken them, they haven't changed my mood at all except to give me a sense of urgency to get to the bathroom.

I do have an herbal tea that's a laxative and it also has chamomile in it, so it kind of has a mellowing effect. But definitely not with a regular laxative.

Forgive me if I'm prying. I'm glad that you're confronting your problem and really wish you all the luck and strength in the world to get through it.

I live in NJ and my ride to work almost every morning is a nightmare therefore I have become REALLY bad with that one! I have to learn to curb it...I really do, it's bad!

When I am stressed, I read positive books, I lift heavy weights, go hiking if I have the time. My favorite is going to a park with a creek and meditate to the sound of water and nature. If I am at home, I would do pilates or Yoga the breathing helps! If I am in a meeting with angry or negative people, I go to the bathroom, to do breathing exercises, and clear my thinking! I realized that is not the what happens that is stressing me out but my interpretation of it! The people that are agressive toward others are usually weak and they do that to appear to be strong! Things are not what they appear to be, what is behind it? I ask myself questions, why I am upset? What is really bothering me? Now , pay attention to your feelings and the response! Emotion: The body's reaction to your mind, change your thinking and you will change your life!

I used to do destructive things when I was stressed. I won't go into them because I want to be a positive influence on my fellow Cathe-ites!

First, I pray. Even if it's just a quick, litte "help!" - I pray.
Second, I BREATHE...really....deep....breaths...
Third, I channel the stress and frustration into my training...I determine to lift heavier weights, throw harder, more focused punches, jump higher, kick higher, stretch longer! As a matter of fact, in the midst of a stressful workday, I tell my co-workers that I'll really be throwing around the dumbbells after this one!

Dear Marla --

I'm also a "driving ventor". Vent="scream and curse" in my book -- and I used to be such a nice girl. Watch out -- I'm on my way home from work in a couple of minutes. People with the bite sized candy bars need to STOP bringing them to work!!!! ARGGGGG!

Petting my dogs immediately destresses me. I also take my dogs for walks. I take hot baths and read. The reading distracts me from my stressful thoughts.

I work out really hard. Or I run really far (all the while wishing I didn't have to go back). Or I clean obsessively and purge possessions.
