What do you all think of Ensure?

I just saw a commercial for Ensure High Protein...and maybe I'm just having a chocolate craving but it looked deelish ;). One of their claims is it's only 5g of sugar. Do any of you drink Ensure? Or is it something I should stay away from? It seems like it would be easy when I'm short on time at work.

Several years ago my sister-in-law gave me one to try. It was probably the nastiest tasting stuff I have ever tried. IIRC, it had a very strong taste similar to evaporated milk that was slightly disguised with some chocolate flavoring and sweetener. Yuk! I haven't bothered to read the label for the nutritional value of it, but unless they've made some serious improvements in the taste of the stuff, I don't think I could down it no matter how nutritious it might be. But I would also point out that everyone has different preferences in food and drink, so others might not find it so awful. I would just suggest that you purchase a single can/bottle and try it first.

My SIL had some health issues and her doc recommended the stuff. She did tell me that if you put it in the freezer and drink it when it is really, really cold it isn't quite so bad.

When I think of Ensure...I think of a drink for very old people who are going downhill...and fast...because they cannot take regular food(my gram who had alzheimer's was supposed to drink it). So something in my psyche screams...NO NO NO!

Therefore, I will drink chocolate milk and be happy :D

But that's just me...so...whatever floats your boat!

I remember LOVING Ensure when I was a teen. Don't know why, everyone seemed to hate it

You may like it or not. It's one of those things. I would try and buy one can (if they sell it individually). I worked at a pharmacy for 15 years and it was one of the best selling products. Boost also tastes similar and they have a hi-protein line as well.

Me personally, I don't mind the taste, but the price is a bit too high for my budget.

I drank it when I was too thin and trying to gain weight. It wasn't bad. I made milkshakes with it so I could add more calories that way.

I think it's pretty good nutrition. It's definitely not only for old people going downhill.

Thanks guys! I forgot to write it on my grocery list this morning so guess what I forgot to look at! Maybe next week haha. Thanks for all your input! I agree with the elderly drinking this stuff! Most of my patients have it at least once a day! I remember my mom also drinking a boost a day when she was trying to gain weight. I don't want to gain weight! So maybe it isn't such a great idea!

It contains a lot of ingredients you can't pronounce! Seems extremely processed. I would look for something with fewer ingredients that you can pronounce.

ITA!
And the main ingredients in the regular formula are sugars.

I just use a whey protein powder that is only whey, stevia, and some vitamins. Its easier and cheaper than those premade drinks. I just have a little (snack size) ziploc baggie and a water bottle, drink some of the water so there is room for the powder, slowly pour the powder in, put on the lid (tight) and shake. Its not as cloying as those premade drinks.

Save your money

I used to drink Ensure last year....the chocolate plus calcium kind. For me, the chocolate tasted really good. It is not just for "old people"...I would drink one in the morning when I was rushed for time. I workout at 5:00 a.m. and sometimes I would drink 1/2 of the bottle before a high intense workout that early in the morning.

I stopped drinking Ensure this year because I've been trying to cut back on my sugars as well as eat more natural foods. It had quite a bit of sugar for those small bottles! (18-25 grams depending on which flavor you buy).

Several months ago, I saw that they made a new, High Protein kind, and of course it peaked my interest! I bought the Chocolate 4-pack to try and regretted it. First, the ingredient list is an essay of chemicals and stuff I couldn't even pronounce! Yes, it is 5 grams of sugar, and they use Splenda. I try my best to stay away from artificial sweeteners. Finally, the taste...YUCK! It tasted very chalky...definitely not the flavor of the original chocolate Ensure drinks that I was used to.

So, my opinion is that you should stay away from it. Like you, I thought it would be convenient for me to take to work, but it's not worth it to me.
