I just have to share with you all. Here is a synopsis of my father-in-law:

He served from January 16, 1943 thru September 14, 1945 in World War 2 . He served as a medic with the 35th Division, 134th Infantry Medical Detachment. He was honorably dicharged as a T5 " staff sargent". He served in the European Theater in Normandy, France. In Holland in The Ardennes Forest Region, In Luxemburg Belgium at the Battle of the Bulge then crossed over the Rhine River and continued in Germany untill the end of the war. He returned to Akron after the war and has been a resident of Cuyahoga Falls since 1952. He graduated from the University of Akron and worked for 40 years as an engineer for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. Looong story short, ooops too late (wink) he was to receive a bronze star after he returned home but it never came. His daughter,(my DH's sis) thru lots of research was able to track it down for him!!! Being Veteran's Day
tomorrow, my husband E-mailed a newscaster in our area explaining that we had his bronze star and if he knew if there were going to be any special events in the area honoring veterans. It just so happens that he wrote back and said PERFECT timing....they are having a huge event at the Akron Civic Center tomorrow nite with returning troops from Iraq with WW II Veterans attending. My FIL does not know it but he is going to be escorted up on stage by my husband and will be pinned with his bronze star by the newscaster who has done two tours of duty in Iraq himself!!! I can hardly write this without the tears flowing as my husband is sooo emotional already about it. It's going to be a tough walk up on stage. They are reserving the front row for our family. This is going to be such a thrilling/emotional/proud moment for us all. Here are some of the other medals they sent him:

Bronze Star

Good Conduct Medal

American Campagne Medal

European-African-Middle Eastern Campagne Med

World War II Victory Medal

Combat Medical Badge 1st Award
Honorable Service Lapel Button

Thank you all for letting me share a happy moment. I am having surgery done tomorow...a tooth extraction, bone graft and eventually an impant and crown due to biting on a walnut shell inside of a muffin! Say a prayer that I will feel fine afterwards to be able to attend. If you are in the area, I have a feeling it will be televised on the Akron news tomorrow nite. Eric Mansfield is the newscaster who is doing our presentation. Thank again all for letting me go on & on!!!

Oh Debbie that is so wonderful!! I am so happy for your father-in-law. That is such a wonderful story.

Debbie, that is so wonderful. I was tearing up just reading your post! I know these men do not feel that they are hero's in any way and can be so humble. It is great that they are honoring your father in law this way, and I sure hope he enjoys his special surprise night. I also hope you are there to see it with the rest of the family!

Give him a hug from all of us who are greatful for the service to our country!

What a fabulous occasion!!! that is a fantastic honor. thanks for sharing that with us! good luck with your surgery also. I hope it goes great!

Debbie!!!! That is such a wonderful story!!!!!

I will say a prayer that you will feel fine after your surgery. Please keep us posted and let us know how it went.

:)

I'll be thinking about you!

Oh Debbie, how wonderful! There arn't many verterans left from WWII era and I don't think we can do enough to honor them. I'll be looking for the story online tomorrow. I sure hope you'll be feeling well enough to go--I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

Please post again and let us know how it went.

Oh wow, Mama Deb, what a great story! Your FIL certainly deserves it. Sending you healing vibes for your surgery tomorrow.

Pinky:)

Debbie, what an amazing story! I read your post and then read it again out loud to my husband who is active duty and couldn't finish it without crying. Your FIL is an inspiration and should be VERY proud of his service. I'm guessing he will be very humble though. DH's father and mine both served in WWII as well, so I understand the importance of the recognition of his service. He so deserves his bronze star and I'm so happy he will finally get it.

Yes, please post again and let us know how it went. And pictures too if you can!

I asked my DH who's a history and military buff about the Bronze Star and he said it's a big deal and they don't hand them out too easily so you should be very proud of him!! :)

BTW, my father and father-in-law also served in WWII.

WOW!!! What an awesome story. Does bring tears...How wonderful your FIL will get recognition for his outstanding record.:+ What a great man. Thanks you so much for sharing..:)

Good luck with the surgery. I've had alot of dental work done in my mouth and I will pray for you to feel good after so you can go...:)...Carole

Thank you all so very much. You all have me crying! I still can't believe the wonderful timing and how this all fell into place. As one of you stated...he is a very humble man and would not want any fuss made about him at all. I am hoping it is not too much for him. He is 84 and has a very hard time walking now. Just watching him approach the stage will be soo emotional for us, his family. My MIL is the one who was always upset that he never got his medal and I am just thrilled that Dave and his sisters took it upon themselves to make this happen. Thank you all so much and I will surely pass on your comments to him. I hope to have a pic to share also. HUGS 2 U all!

RE: Also...

Debbie...no doubt this will be one of the most touching and memorable moments of his life. What a blessing to have it all work out so beautifully. Thanks for sharing and we'll be praying that you are able to attend.

RE: Also...

Thank you to your FIL for his service.

My father, similar record, kept his service to himself. When we saw his headstone at the VA cemetery it said silver star recipient. There was no mistake but his service record burned in a fire along with 100,000 others. We never found out why or what he did for the silver star. He never even received the medal, our congressman finally got them issued to the family.

Please bring some tissues or a hankie for your dad, it will be an emotional moment.
Dave

Debbie, you and your husband are two in a million! Your FIL is going to be beside himself. What a special moment it will be for all of you!

Best of luck with your surgery -- you'll do great!
