Weight lifting gloves

Hello, does anybody use these? I see the new videos coming out seem to get some mileage out of wraps and gloves, but I have never used them before. I am not one to fret about my hands, but I have noticed my grip can be bad when I get sweaty....as we tend to do with Cathe!

What is a good brand/price? I have looked on eBay and they surely run the gammut. I was just hoping for some pros and cons. I think I would also use them in my mountain biking. Are some better than others, and what do they use in the Cathe vids? Also, does anyone know what wraps they are using in the new ones, and the purpose?

Thanks,
Dani

Hi Dani! I'll take a shot at answering your question.

I use my gloves mainly to help with grip on the weights. When my palms get sweaty, it is harder to lift the heavier weight without worrying about it slipping out of my hands. Safety first. If I get hurt then that cuts into my workout time and therefore will set me back from what I am trying to accomplish.

I did not spend much money on mine. I bought mine at Wal-Mart a couple of years ago for I think $7. It does a great job for what I use it for, but if you are going to use them for mountain biking as well then you might want to invest a little more money and maybe check them out at a sporting goods store. They should have different kinds and brands and maybe a sales associate will be well informed about them to give you some good advice.

Good luck.
Kristi

I just bought a pair at Wal-Mart myself. I have used them once, they seem to bunch up on my palm so my dh thinks I got too big of a size. I am getting callouses on my hands and fingers from lifting, is this normal? That is one reason I got the gloves but now I think the gloves will make it worse, sigh, I don't know what to do. Where I am getting the callouses is not where the gloves covers so I don't know if I would need a complete glove and not the ones with the fingers out or not. I hope someone else answering this thread can shed some light on the subject for both of us!

They do sound like they might be too big, especially if they are bunching. I get callouses if I forget to take my wedding ring, and a ring on my right hand off. ( Not to mention I can tweak a bend into them and have to shape them back....Yikes! ) I don't care so much about them in terms of how they look, but like Christi said, it is more for safety. I do feel like I will drop a weight at times when my hands are sweaty. I would hesitate to use a glove with full fingers because your finger tips are really necessary for sensation and grabbing.

Still curious what others use, and what Cathe suggests.

Thanks so far!!

Hi, Dani--

I always wear gloves when using weights. My hands get really sweaty, and the gloves help me keep my grip. I haven't bought any in a while (I usually get them as a birthday or Christmas gift), but I don't think they're that expensive. I would think any sporting goods store would carry them. The ones that are made for weight lifting have a little bit of padding on the palm that seems to make it more comfortable on your hand when you're holding heavy weights, and they have the fingers cut off so you can still feel your grip on the weight. Also, they come in women's sizes, which is good. My hands are pretty small, so I would never be able to wear a men's size.

The only time I don't like having them on is when doing push-ups and planks. When I put my hands down on the floor with the gloves on, they actually slip a little in the gloves, and it feels a little unstable on the floor (I need to stop being lazy and just take them off before I do those things ;)). But I never feel that when I'm lifting, just when I'm doing stuff on the floor.

Kristi, if yours are bunching up on you, I would think that they might be a little too big. They should fit perfectly; maybe try a women's size, if you haven't already, or just go a size smaller.

Good luck!

Marie :)

I bought mine at Walmart about 3 years ago and never lift without them. I've never had them bunch up. I'm sure there are a lot better brands out there, but I don't have any problems with these and I remember them costing more like $4, but maybe they were a tad higher, can't remember. I can't imagine lifting without gloves and I think it would really irritate me to have to try, it's just one of those things you get used to. Kind of like a pad on my barbell - I know in some videos Cathe doesn't use a pad, but I think it would drive me crazy not to have it there.

And come to think of it.....I have a little weightlifting frog statue that stands on the TV when I lift and it makes me crazy if he's not in place when I start my workout......so maybe these are all just compulsive habits, but I gotta have um.

Briee

I'm not the only fanatic out there.....I believe Aquajock counts her icecubes so as to have the right ratio of ice to water....so a weightlifting frog isn't really that far off.

Hi There,

I bought myself some gloves, but found that they cut off my circulation and I didn't like the feel of them so I stopped using them. They weren't too tight, but just made my hands feel all tingly.

I guess I'm a bare-handed kinda gal!

:)

Hi Dani!

I have lifting gloves, too, that I bought about three years ago at Sports Authority for under $20. They are made by Harbinger and I've seen Cathe & crew wearing them, I believe, in prior videos. There were several versions available when I bought mine, at different prices. I chose one that was sort of middle-of-the-road in padding, and that was leather on the palm and otherwise is some kind of neoprene, that kind of thing.

They have really been great. I definitely think they've improved my form because I don't worry about my grip slipping and I don't grab my weights in a wrist-straining death grip anymore. :)

If I remember correctly I got the women's medium. The guy at Sports Authority let me take one out of the package to try it for size. They're just right -- snug but not tight. Not a big investment but a great tool!

Now, the wraps that Cathe is wearing in Kick Punch & Crunch look like something else completely, and I'm not sure what. Anybody know what they are, cost, etc.?

They are boxing wraps: long strips of woven cotton material with a loop at one end to put around your thumb, and velcro at the other end to fasten them after you are done wrapping. They usually cost somewhere between $3 and $6 dollars a pair.

I've seen them at Dick's sporting goods as well as some other sporting goods stores. They are also usually available (though may cost more) at local boxing gyms or karate schools where they teach cardio kickboxing. They're nice because they absorb sweat, and you can get them in all sorts of colors: I have both black and red.

Kathryn or anyone else, can you tell me the purpose in having the wraps as opposed to gloves? Thanks

Briee

Briee, thanks so much! I don't know if you have seen it or not, but one of my all time favorite movies is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I was imagining myself as Veruca whining to daddy that "I want a weight lifting frog statue, I want one nooooowwww!" How cute is that?! Where do you find something like that anyway?

I also second the question for the purpose of wraps for the new video. It is not like we are punching a bag or anything, unless there is a secret we don't know about. ;-) I can see it now, we all find out that you need a punching bag as the latest piece of equipment, and we are all running out and buying them to attatch to the bedroom ceiling (or your favorite workout area)! Maybe disguise it with a hanging plant during the day, throw a blanket over it...who knows.

Oh how I can let my imagination go........:7 I just love it when I crack myself up, so so so sad!

Ha! Dani, you are too funny. You cracked me up too! I also have the Harbingers gloves like KathyS and I am very happy with them. Mine have a wrap around wrist band also. (attached to them) My first pair did not and I like them with the wrist wrap better as they do help with heavy weight. Also, I might be wrong, but I think I remember Cathe saying the purpose of the wrist wraps were to help keep her wrist in alignment for the workout. Dani~I got my gloves at an exercise equipment store but I am sure any sporting goods stores like Dick's would carry them. You could call first. Also, the guy that helped me for size said they are to fit snug as they will stretch out with time. Good Luck!

Dani, I probably got the weight lifting froggy at some garage sale, probably some dogs chew toy....believe me it's not something you HAAAAVVVVE to have, but it's a psycological thing for me. Debbie's psycological "thing" is to have her weights lined up in order with the numbers facing up......correct????? I find that as I get more and more pregnant....I'm throwing my weights more and more...like you're not supposed to do when you set them down. And I too used to line them up, but that would mean lifting more weight at the end of the workout...which I am not presently inclined to do.

Debbie...thank you for clarifying the wrap.....so it's to stabilize ones wrists? Sounds like their "making me spend more money on stuff again". You gotta look cool!!

Briee

Briee!

GREAT memory. Yes, they have to all be lined up in order of poundage with ALL numbers facing up! Same with all my bodybars, they have to be standing on end, weight number facing me and in specific order from heaviest to lightest. Hubby works out with me at times and for SOME UNKNOWN REASON, he doesn't notice they are like that! Let's just say AFTER he leaves the workout room, I FIX 'em all! :7 Would love to see a pix of your workout frog! Which reminds me, when do we get to see pix of all those adorable kids of yours?????

I'm sorry Debbie

As soon as I can get everyone to sit still AND I can figure out this digital picture thing to transfer onto the computer....I'll send you pictures, I promise!!!! (have I said that before??).

O.K., I wonder if we are all just wierd or something, because I never thought of the obsessive/compulsiveness of my behavior until it is pointed out......I, too, line up my weights with the numbers all facing up only I have taken it one step further. I found that Sharpie has come out with the coolest little permanent marker for dark things, so it actually writes silver. It shows up, almost in this glowing sort of way, at the ends of my free weights. I have them all lined up, but I can also look at them from the ends and see the numbers, and they all have to face the same, and the sort of becken to me from the foot of my bed....just peeking out from under the dust ruffle. I think I am sick:p

Oh, and Briee, I spent a GOOD 15 minutes or so this morning doing a Google/eBay search for a weight lifting frog. How sad is that!?:)

I bought my gloves at Wal-Mart, I really like them. My hands get sweaty during weight lifting, gloves make it easier to keep a good grip on the barbell, especially during plies ... my gloves were about $7 and they came in small medium and large, and they have a velcro band on the bottom for a tighter fit.
