I think they make you feel tough, but they also help stabilize the wrist, and they absorb sweat. They are machine washable, but they tangle up unless you have some way of keeping them from doing so. Same with drying. I've tried washing them in a lingerie bag, and they tangled less, but still some.

As for wraps vs. gloves (another poster's question): wraps absorb sweat better (and you'd be surprised at how much your hands sweat when you do kickboxing!). They are also less stiff.
 
I wear gloves when doing weights (unless it's a light weight workout). The ones I have are Schiek, which I bought because they are non-leather (vegan here). They have cool little "fins" behind the finger parts that you use to take them off, which helps keep the seams from tearing. They also have a padded palm, a wrist wrap, and are machine washable.
