Weight issues.

Hi Cathe,
Thank you for your wonderful workout programs. I follow your Fit TV programs 5-6x a week. I'm 38 yrs old and have been fit most of my life. In the last few years i stopped exercising and gained a considerable amount of weight. I went up from a 118ls to a whopping 157 lbs! I panicked and started working out and have been very regular since Oct '06 working out for atleast an hour a day. My issue is despite the fitness programs and eating sensibly i still weigh 150lbs. That's way too heavy for my 5' 4" frame. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks a lot in advance!

hi not cathe but how are your clothes fitting?? sometimes the scale number is inacurate to your actual size.lean active muscle tissue takes up less space as fat,but will weigh the same so although you may way more then recommended(i also takes those charts with a grain of salt) you may be actually quite healthy, and the 150lbs may be mostly lean muscle mass esp. of you workout at a good intensity and eat well.

I agree with Kassia. Throw the scale out and purchase a tape measurer. Losing inches is easier than losing pounds. And being fit and happy is more important.:)

I am so glad you posted this. It makes me feel less alone. My situation is similar to yours and I have been feeling very distressed lately. I am 36, 5'1" and weigh 162.5, but my body fat has dropped from 28.3% to 14.5% (measured by a nutritionist using calipers) since I found Cathe and her wonderful workouts. I work out 6 days a week and eat especially clean during the week and on the weekends, with only an occasional treat (like a Starbucks Grande Frappucino blended light)on weekend days. I have only lost 10 pounds during the process, but I have gone from an XL to a medium in tops and from a 16 to a 12 in bottoms. I look at my old pictures and I look like a completely different person now, but I still have the feeling inside that 164 is too heavy for my height. I enjoy weight work and believe I have lost the body fat because of that, but I wonder if I should have concentrated on cardio first-it's as though I have done things in the wrong order.

Thanks to both of you ladies that have responded to the original post! Your comments made me feel a lot better!

Thanks for your positive response ladies. I did lose 2 dress sizes - from size 14 to size 10 and am on my way down. That was encouraging to me but the weight loss wasnt much. Thats why i wondered. :)

I'm short too...just over 5'! Over the past 10 years, and three kids, I gained weight that I haven't been able to shed. (My youngest is three!) I've been faithfully working out for about two years, but only recently have I been working out really aggressively (about 6 days a week 5-6 hours cardio and 2 hours weights). Strength training has helped me look much leaner and feel better, (especially now that I fit back into my size 8 & 10 jeans)--but I'm also frustrated that the scale hasn't budged much. I don't care how much muscle I pack onto this frame, I know I shouldn't weigh more than 120. I understand everyone's advice about throwing away the scale, but it's so depressing when the number on the scale doesn't match the way you feel--or want to. :-(

Wow! Your body fat percentage is amazing! Getting in to the teens is really low for women. (You can see my trainer's abs and she's higher than 14.5%). Not to demean your progress in any way, but make sure you're getting good readings. Calipers, even in the hands of a professional, are often inaccurate.

To keep from relying on one source, you might consider getting a Tanita scale that tracks body fat percentage, as well as weight, hydration and daily caloric needs. It gives a better all around indication of fitness. I just got one and LOVE it. (Something to focus on besides weight.) I'm almost your exact height and age (37) and although my weight and pant size are smaller, my fat percentage is in the low 30's--much higher than yours! You should be proud of your accomplishment. You must be very lean indeed. I 'look' pretty solid, but I'm very busty. x(

I would question that measurement. I am 5-4 and fairly muscular. I got measured when I weighed around 145 was a size 6, and was about 21%. 14.5% seems a bit too lean for your height and weight and size, and I bet your nutrionist made a mistake.

As far as the Tanita scales, I feel they measure on the high end, but are a good guage of progress.

I am 5'3" and weight 150-155, depending on the weather. I don't think 150 is too mucb weight at all for a 5'3" height. Just because you're a few pounds over where the Evil!Charts! say you should be doesn't mean it's not right for you!

I'm sure you are a lot better off than someone your height, 118 pounds, and doesn't exercise at all. That person may fit on the Evil!Charts! but it is meaningless without fitness. JMHO

Hi not cathe, just putting in my two cents. There have been a lot of great replies here. My point of view is that I have been going through maybe a similar situation - I was very fit and also lean much of my life - then gained 30 pounds in two years, and then was trying for several years to get it off (I am 50 now). I was working out and working out, cardio and weights, feeling better and getting slimmer somewhat, but not really losing the weight. I did not lose much of any significant weight or body fat even with all the regular exercise until I read Tosca Reno's book on eating clean and then also BFFM. And when I finally started eating clean, the pounds started coming off. Since January I have lost 15 pounds; I still have 15 to go but eating clean has changed everything. I now BELIEVE I can lose the weight I want to lose. BFFM is probably the most helpful book I have ever read on the subject (Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, you can find it on the internet or search for it in the forums to see more comments).

Hope this helps. I know how depressing it can be to be working out all the time and the scale keeps looking back at you with the same old numbers.

Aim for nothing, and you'll hit it every time!

I second the burn the fat, feed the muscle. Consistency is always key in losing fat but remember you can shrink in inches and not see much weight loss. Can be frustrating...sometimes :(

Thanks for your tip Ann. This is what is great abt this forum. I get to hear from people who have been in my shoes and are ready to share what they did to reach their goals! I am going to order BFFM. I am healthy but i want to feel lighter too and losing 30 pounds would definitely make me lighter. I believe i can do it.

Deborah,
I, like you, happened upon Cathe's DVDs and had very little equipment, so I bought some dumbells. I do all of her workouts with dumbells. I don't like step arobics, so I avoid them at all cost. (I'm WAY too clumsy for that). But just using the dumbells, I have dropped weight and gained muscle. (size 16/18 after my second son's birth to a size 8 now.) I am SOOO glad to hear from the other ladies that the scales are deceptive. I weigh 10 pounds more than I did when I got pregnant with my first son, but I feel leaner, and I didn't know why the scales weren't on par with that. Now I know. Whew.

Keep plugging away, Deborah. It seems like an up-hill battle at first, but soon it becomes a way of life. I am sad when I miss my daily Cathe workout now. I find that working out and building muscles not only helps my body, but it's an amazing stress reducer.

Good luck!
