Vlad ate mouse poison!!!

My former coworker used to think that too until some rodents chewed into the wiring that led to the house fire that burned her home and killed her pets who were inside. Some form of pest control can indeed be a life saver. Just a thought.

My mother had a friend that ignored the problem. The infestation was so bad, the city condemned her home.
They gutted the house it was so bad.

Nan...let me assure you that he will be just fine...how do I know? My dodo bird greyhound did the exact same thing last Thursday  Rushed him to the vet...they made him puke it all up and he was just fine! But, I do know how you feel. I was about to have a total nervous breakdown over it! I will be OK!

We had a cat that ate a poisoned mouse. The cat died - in my lap - in the midst of convulsions, leaking from everywhere - it was a horrible death for him.

The best way to deal with mice is to have cats.

Not always. My neighbor had a cat and it didn't help him.
They kept smelling this strange odor in their kitchen. Didn't know what it was. He found out when he remodeled the sun room next to the kitchen. He found a wall full of dead mice. That is another problem with poison. You are giving the mice an opportunity to die inside your walls:eek::eek:

thanks for some tips with the peppermint spray. i don't like posion b/c not only can pets eat it,but even if the mice eat it they will wind up hiding in the walls dying there and leaving the home with a very nasty smell. i don't care for traps b/c the kid and the cat won't think nothing of going near it. unfortunately its what we had to do at the time. i don't like glue traps either b/c get yourself stuck on those things nuff said. will have to hip dh to that idea though. although since we have had sam no evidence of mice here. sam will chase and chew anything that moves(that include your toes)

while i am not for the torture or killing of any animal i would set a trap for my own husband with he carried disease these rats carry. i am just not willing to take the chance with a child that already has medical and developmental conditions. and condemned homes great point, here is something from just a few months ago at a grand city about an hour from here. http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/177865 they neglected to do anything about the problem and ppl nearly lost their livlehood and trust of customers. they are lucky they were not to point of being shut down permanently but their business has suffered.

Not to mention the fact that rodents can carry the hantavirus: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hanta/hps/index.htm

Too many accidents can happen with poisons...I concur that the quick kill, and infestation prevention in general, is best.

I will have to try the peppermint thing. Vlad will eat peppermint. I always tell the poor dogger he has "a stupid in his head" but he is so sweet. I got a call from the vet, lm on my vm, he is happy as pie and wagging his tail and being extra friendly to everyone. So much for my big:pmean:pviscious:pferocious:p Shepweiler. Kill 'em with kindess, I guess.

I had some icy hot on my hand last week, he sniffed, liked the peppermint smell, and licked it!!! He was doing a good imitation of "peanut butter" tongue for a while after that. So, he will eat peppermint, but at least it wont make him sick!! or dead:(:(

We have mouses who seem to want to build houses in our sunroom. I can't say I blame them b/c it is cold outside. But, I don't the mouses in MY houses!!!! DH bought some sticky traps and some D-Con mouse poison. The dog hangs out in the sunroom when he is wet/snowy so he doesn't track in the house. I TOLD DH (D doesn't stand for darling today) not to put the D-Con out there. He said he wouldn't leave the dog out there. Well, this morning he left the dog out there for like a minute and Vlad ate about a 3rd of the small box of mouse killer. We looked it up on Google, said D-Con has a sweet smell to dogs and they are prone to eat it, but he should be ok. To DH's defense, it was shoved waaaaay back in the far end of the room behind some flower pots. DH called the vet this morning, said to feed him some hydrogen peroxide so he will yack it up and bring him in. DH fed Vlad the peroxide, he yacked at home and again on the way to the vet in DH's new truck (serves him right). Vlad is at the vet now, they are keeping him for observation but said he will be fine. We are supposed to pick him up at 6:15 tonight. *sigh* What a morning!!

That is scary! The same thing happened to my mutty mutt a few years back. I had put out d-con in the yeard under the deck thinking that my dog was too big to get under there. I called him to come in and at first he didn't respond, so I called again...I was about to go out and get him when he came trotting up and something in my gut made me yank his mouth open and there was the proof...blue gunk in his teeth. I rushed him to the vet and they pumped his stomach and told me that if I hadn't brought him in he would have died from internal bleeding...BOY you talk about a guilt trip! They also gave me some vitamin K to give him over the next few days. I felt so bad that I had put my dog through that. The up side, the second we got home, I let him out to pee (and went with him) and the first thing he did was look for some more poison eat!;-0

He's home now, seems to be bouncing along without a care in the world, or a clue that he had the whole family in a panic today. Vet gave him Vit K, Charcoal, and fluids while he was there. He came home w/ more Vit K to take for a wk or so, and some doggie pepcid to keep his stomach settle after all the yacking he did today. I have to call and make an appt for Fri or Sat so they can do more blood work to make sure all is A-OK. Other than that, she said he should be ok, it happens more often than people think. Keep an eye on him in case he starts to look ill, but he should be ok:D:D:D:D

Aw, poor Vlad. Thank goodness he is going to be fine. I hate to see our pets distressed or sick. Give him a nice big pat on the head from me...and maybe even a little massage behind his ears. My dogs loved that :)
