Vitamins

Hello girls, I wanted some advice on what vitamins and or supplements I should take. I'm 49 years young, eat healthy, of course exercise 6x a week and am about 125lbs. I dont know if this info. matters, but just in case. THanks for any help you all can offer. Lori

When I was asking the girls here what they thought of the STS series, they added to eat clean and take my vitamins, so I thought maybe I needed to. Lori

Unless you have a medical condition or a confirmed vitamin/mineral deficiency vitamins are basically a waste of money. If you eat a reasonably healthy diet you should be getting everything you need from your diet, more is not necessarily better. If you eat not so well vitamins will not make up for the lack of vitamins from your diet.

If anything t may be worth considering taking additional magnesium because our produce is notoriously depleted of magnesium (I like Natural Calm, you disolve it in water and can adjust your dose since it is a powder) and vitamin D because most people have insufficiency or depleted levels. You may want to ask your doctor to check when you get blood work done. Vitamin D levels are not routinely checked unless for certain health conditions if you don't ask. http://www.modernmedicine.com/moder...d-State/ArticleNewsFeed/Article/detail/589053

If you don't eat fish at least twice a week you may want to consider taking fish oil capsules.

If you really think you need to add additional vitamins or supplements find a vitamin that is based on whole foods, an example would be New Chapter www.newchapter.com. They are available generally at health food stores or much cheaper online at www.iherb.com or www.vitaminshoppe.com.

I take a multi and fish oil, but if I had to take only one, it would be the fish oil.

I played around with other supplements a while back but have since phased them out.

I take a calcium supplement, Omega 3s & biotin. The first to prevent bone loss, the second to increase hair & nail growth. :)

On the advice of another forum member I recently started taking branch chain amino acids & L-carnitenes to promote muscle growth & repair, it seems to have made a difference in strength building, but I've tweaked my routine a little too, so maybe a combination of the two.

Can you tell me what brand you got of Omega 3 and biotin. And also chain amino acids and L-caritenes? I'm totally at a loss of what to buy. Thanks alot!! Lori

Oh jeez, I don't really know what brands........the omega 3s & biotin I get from the drugstore, I just look for the highest dose & whatever's on sale. The BCAAs & L-Cs I got from bodybuilder.com. I'm relatively new to these supplements & there is quite a bit listed on the site. I guess what you can do is look at the dosages compared to the price, & also whether you prefer pills or powders.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.....

Dr. Oz was on Oprah the other day and he said he takes a multivitamin, calcium, vitamin D and fish oil .

I am looking for a multivitamin right now but don't know what I should be looking at/ for with them??
Any suggestions ??

I buy from Andrew Lessman. He offers a boat-load of stuff, but I just use the fish oil and his Hair, Skin, & Nails formula as a multi. His "Secure" soy protein shakes are awesome too (though I just switched to whey, so no more for me :( ).

Once I'm done with the H,S, & N formula, I may switch to one of his official multis.

On the advice of several Dr.'s, I don't take a multivitamin. Neither do my children. After discussing our diets they said we were getting more than enough in our food. And we use the 20 min of sunshine daily for Vitamin D (which helps calcium absorption). We eat fruits, veggies, fish and protein.

Here is an article that explains why to take whole foods supplements rather than isolated/synthetic vitamins.

My friend is an herbologist and she told me that New Chapter is one of the best brands, it was also recommended by my naturopathic doctor. I take several of their supplements but for a diagnosed condition and under the supervision of a doctor. They have several multi vitamins, this one looks pretty good because it does not have excessive amounts of vitamins. Too much of a good thing is actually bad :eek:http://www.newchapter.com/products/every-womans-one-daily

I don't take a multi vitamin, I add a powdered green to my smoothie HealthForce Vitamineral Green http://www.bestjuicers.com/vitamineral_green.html
