Videos limit you???

Hey, Janice! In answer to your question of how I do rear delts with 21.25 lbs per hand . . . very carefully and deliberately!

A few things to keep in mind:

No muscle group ever works in complete isolation. And rear delt lifts, especially when you have a palms-in position (palms facing each other) not only recruit the rear delts but also some larger upper back muscles including the upper traps and the rhomboids. In fact, I only relatively recently added in the rear-delt set in which the palms face out, which isolates the rear delts even more, and immediately noticed a greater challenge to that area.

Also, I worked up to the weight loads I'm currently using over a long period of time, performing essentially the same basic routine consistently (as opposed to this ongoing every-six-week switcheroo that a lot of people advocate) and incrementally increasing weight loads as I felt comfortable. Please, please do NOT try to jump into the weight loads I've listed above if you are not close to those; you'll only injure yourself. I'm not trying to sound condescending when I say that, but increasing loads more than a certain percentage can be very, very risky.

As far as why they are the same throughout the workout . . . I dunno. It just seems simpler and more time-efficient to use one set of dumbbells throughout the workout.

Hope this answers your questions -

This is a very interesting topic. I have learned so much from this conversation. My only question is to A-Jock, what do you do for your lower body for strength training? It is truly amazing the weight loads you can lift. I can only hope to one day lift this much, but it will take years to do this.

RE: A-Jock Speaks

A-Jock, Would you please post this over in suggestions for Cathe's next videos?? If you don't I will, hahaha.
Awsome workout! It seems there are a lot of us who would like to increase out weightload and not do as many reps all the time that are in most of Cathe's workouts.

Hey Janice,

I agree; I'll certainly hang on to the workouts and use them periodically, but I may have to be brave, turn off the DVD player and start doing some heavy lifting on my own. We have a Total Gym that allows me to do some cool stuff I can't do with free weights - like pull ups - so I need to incorporate that more often.

I want to look like the chick carrying the rocket launcher in Matrix 3, but I've got a long way to go. Maybe I can try AJ's upper body routine.

But, as far as Cathe goes for cardio she is definitely advanced. I'd recommend her to any "Advanced" excerciser concerning cardio for sure or any advanced excerciser who doesn't want to be a body builder.

I'm not looking to gain muscle at all (I have enough muscle), just enhance and keep lean and toned. I love Slim Series for this reason and I love Cathe's new BB strength workouts.

Editing to say...I love working out at my gym for variety but I mostly use the cardio equipment there. :)

A-Jock, 21.25 pounds for rear delts and triceps! Holy guacamole! That's awesome! Boy, do I feel like a wuss! lol! I know you are about the same height as Cathe. Do you have the same magnifico physique? My chin hit the floor when I read that. I won't tell you how low the weights are that make me cry! :)

Bobbi - not to make you cry even harder, but I always do cardio and weights in the same session in my land workouts, AND I always do my weights AFTER cardio.

I get real, REAL tired of the Didacticas out there who say there is one best way to work out, and there is only one way to achieve your goals re strength v. cardio capacity.

In fitness as in all else, "To thine own self be true." Find YOUR own best method.

Question for Amazon A-Jock

Hey A, your routine makes me whimper, girl. I will publicly admit here and now that I will never, ever get to your weights on some (okay, most) upper body parts. Your anterior and posterior delt work is mind-boggling. I can't imagine completing 2 reps at that weight! And biceps -- holy cow! I work extra hard on them, but I've never even made it to a 15-lb dumbbell without having screaming wrists immediately. Your bicep routine with 20's is just flat out amazing. I bow to you, oh buff one! :)

Question for you -- on your back work, is an overhead supine lat press the same thing as a pullover? If not what is it? And what is a bentover back press?

I just sucked the air through my teeth! Following that with a long, slow whistle! You are a machine! I have loved doing Slow and Heavy with BB cardio but I have made the cardio pretty short in deference to my foot. I think doing strength first might be a great way to kick it up when this gets easier and it had better get easier. I pray it gets easier every night before I go to bed. ;)

I am staying with the heavy work indefinitely and I really love to hate it. However, my definition of heavy is somewhat altered having read your post! Slow and Heavy and the Power Series and PUB/PLB with 8, 10 and 12 rep sets allow real focus and I need that. My biceps are coming along nicely but my confounded shoulders remain pathetic. The rear delt and tricep are particularly puny. In the past, I have enjoy changing things constantly, mostly because I get bored easily as well as injured constantly. Damn biomechanics! But this heavy training is very satisfying and I hope to see some real muscle laid down on the body. I didn't choose a chicken icon because I love chickens. Oh, no, it's the resemblence my legs, my limbs, bear to that scrawny-legged and, might I add, delicious creature! :)

Bobbi you really made me laugh about the chicken. When did you start to lift heavy? I just started doing the slow and heavy yesterday as you know from the previous post. I want to start shaking things up a little because mostly I did was endurance with here and there strength so I want to see more muscle tone on me by the summer but who doesn't right? I probally start adding PS. I already do the Pyramids which is one of my favorite strength. Well hopefully we will have what were looking for with the heavy weight lifting}(

RE: Janice...

OMG!!! LOL Jillybean! You made my day!!

Well, to be honest, with or without muscles, people are usually still afraid of me. I just want the body to go with the personality!!!:)

Janice

Now I will have to get a load of that chick in the Matrix. I always thought Angela Bassett (what's love got to do with it) or Linda Hamilton (need I say it?) looked awesome. If you vacuumed all my fat out right now, I may look like them underneath!!! Does that count??? Ha!!

AJock...I would NEVER try to lift your weights right off. I would follow the plan, but with my own poundage. Thanks for the warning though...

I'll let you all know if I find anything else out interesting regarding this topic...

I started to get serious in November albeit carefully serious since I took such a long break. I was amazied how quickly my body responded! I wnent up in small increments but this past week I went crazy and just upped to see what would absoultely fry me, total muscle failure. I must be sick, I loved it so! Of course, I am moving like my granny right now!

Hey, what do you mean you laughed? I am serious. http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/crying.gif

Ok, that's a lie. I am never really happy being too serious but it is indeed true I have chicken legs!
Bobbi "Chick's rule!" http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/chicken.gif

Oh Bobbi I didn't mean it like that just the way you said about having the Chicken avator:) I hope I didn't offend you..

Good heaven's, no, Barbara, you didn't offend me! I was teasing! I'm sorry. I was full of it yesterday, if you know what I mean? Feeling my oats, which is refreshing for a change! They really don't have a smilie I consider "serious" so I opted for that cry baby. My legs may be skinny but they are like rocks! Everyone in my family has been giving them a squeeze which is pretty wierd when you think about it. LOL! When I quit running and then stopped lifting, my husband used to grab my calf and shake his head. They all really like it when I work out and have firm albeit small muscles. I never stop trying to develop bulging muscles but I also know there's only so much these babies can do. I get that muscle envy when I look at Cathe and the crew amd I would love to see A-Jock but you have to use what the good Lord gave you and in my case that's pins for legs as my dear old dad, who had a pair that looked much like mine, use to call them. :)

What I would really love is a six pack! But I am not even going to get started on my abs! LOL!

Hey Bobbi,

I can identify. In junior high, I had to wear a dress to school one day - horrors -- and I actually had a girl following me down the hall pointing and laughing and yelling "chicken legs!" loud enough for the entire school to hear. I have yet to live that down.

I've been searching a long time for a program designed specifically for hardgainers. I think I finally found one and am starting it right away. It's designed by a guy that's struggled with these same problems for years. You may want to take a look:
