VHS vs DVD

If money weren't a consideration, would anyone opt for Cathe's tapes on VHS instead of DVD?

(I would love to hear from people who bought Cathe DVD's and already owned the VHS's. I'm trying to decide if I should take the plunge and get a DVD discount package.)

Thanks!

Hello Dogonyx,

I started with VHS then broke down and bought a DVD player JUST so I could get Cathe on DVD.

The DVD is SOOOO much easier to use. With Cathe you can mix and match so much that you can create your own workouts. The DVD really makes that possible.

When I had the tapes I would find myself queing up the tapes the night before so I could start my workout with (for example) CTX kickbox, then stop at the end of the cardio section, and do the weight work for triceps from the other ctx tape then switch back to the first tape and etc.

Now its just instantly go to the section I want and go back to wherever. None of the awful rewinding either. The dvd also makes it easier to skip to the different sections (routines) of the step workouts so if you are doing, say, step works, and you're pretty good at the first section, with a dvd you can do the warm up and skip to the second or the third and learn that part without either doing the first part or fastforwarding.

I have found ONE disadvantage. Once, while doing cardio kicks, my power went out. I was in the cardio section. With a tape, the tape would have mechanically stopped at the point I was at. But with the DVD, I had to forward through the workout to get back to the point where the power went out. However, it was only THAT section (chapter?) of the DVD and NOT the entire thing.

GET the DVD's. Get them ALL!

Stargazer,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough response. I'm gearing up to take the plunge. Last night I was looking through the Cathe catalog and dreaming of what to mix and match for a workout. Then, I started thinking I better get a 5 DVD player (but I'll hold off on that for awhile)!

(A friend of mine who frequents a Camero website and I were laughing today about how excited we get when someone responds to our posts and how rejected we feel when a post is ignored. We figure a sure way to stop a message thread is for us to respond to it!) :)

Former VHSer

I also had all of Cathe's videos on VHS and made the switch to DVD JUST for Cathe's workouts. I sold my VHS copies to finance the DVD switch. For a long time Cathe was the only one who made workout DVDs I was interested in. NOW CIA and Christi have begun with DVDs, as well as the Firm. So hopefully there will be more and more advance workouts on DVD. Either way I'm sooooo glad that I did this. I love the picture quality, the mix and match possibilities, and the convenience of no RW or FF. :) When I ordered DVDs in Cathe's last pre-order, it was even worth waiting longer for the DVDs than others were waiting for their VHS. Given the option, I'll always buy DVD now!

Now if those Firms would just show up in my Best Buy . . . ;-)

I just got the S&H DVD. It's very convenient since you can pick which bodypart you want to work, and even which exercise you want. I'd get the strength DVDs because you can go to a certain exercise easily, you can skip some you don't like or when you're short on time, and you can mix it all up to keep things fresh.

I don't have cardio DVDs and I doubt I'll get any unless it's somehow split up like CircuitMax and IntervalMax.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-10-02 AT 10:02AM (Est)[p]DVDs are the way to go. As far as I'm concerned, there is no comparison.

Yikes!!!

I just did it! I ordered the big 23 pack of DVD's. Part of me is excited about the anticipation of future workouts and the other part of me is freaked out because I can be cheap (but you get the bulk savings plus the S&H savings).

I'm hoping now that I will be motivated to start training with weights. Since my swimming career in college, I have only been doing cardio type stuff. Seemed to me like that was the best way to keep in shape and lose weight (or try to). I'm glad I've found this website to broaden my horizons.

Thanks for all of your input. I expect I will be thrilled with my purchase. I already have thought in my head of how I can do a spreadsheet where you can pick what workouts you want to do and it will add up the number of minutes of cardio, weights, total, etc.

Thank you again!!

Shelley :)

RE: Yikes!!!

dogonyx,

After reading your questions on DVD vs. VHS, I also took the plunge. I thought my husband was going to blow a gasket. He has always told me that I could never replace all my VHS tapes for DVD's since it would cost us a fortune. I have over 150 VHS tapes now.

I ordered the 23 DVD's at 1PM on Tues. 04/09 and I received them within 48 hours. I was so excited to try it out that I could hardly sleep anticipating my new workouts (I could pick and choose). Well, needless to say, I am totally hooked. I should have taken the plunge months ago. I am jumping from one workout to another and doing abs I never did before. I totally love it!

I hope you are enjoying yours.

RE: Yikes!!!

Your investment will give you fabulous returns. I did the CTX Upper Body Slit today...great workout! When I took the dvd plunge, I really wanted to order the total package but felt completely guitly about the expenditure, instead, I ordered the CTX series (which I didn't have on vhs). Of course once I got CTX I wanted them all. I should have just gone ahead and ordered the complete package, as I would have saved some money. Cathe is wonderful and I am eagerly anticipating the workouts that she has scheduled for production later this year.

RE: Yikes!!!

I'm so excited for you!

I ordered mine last Wednesday and got them on Friday! I love that service. :)

Unfortunately, I was out of town on Friday and Saturday and got sick (cold) on Sunday/Monday so I have yet to experience the thrill of using my new DVD's. (Although I did watch Leaner Legs and do an ab section last night.)

Wait 'til your husband sees the results of those DVD's! He'll be begging to buy you more.

RE: Yikes!!!

how funny - I'm contemplating this very same decisioln (although you've already made yours). My birthday is today, so I'm trying to spend my money already. My problem is - I don't even have a DVD player yet! And that is where my question lies - do those of you who have the programmable DVD player actually use it? Also, did you previously try and do multiple tape routines with your VHS? See, once I put a tape in - that's what I do. i never got into the FF to another section - pop in another tape thing. So would I even use the programmable function? I've got about $200 of money that I will be able to use. Now, I plan on getting the whole Cathe DVD pack - and then trying to sell my VHS to recoup some of my money. Any advice from anyone here? Especially on the programmable function - 'cuz if I can get a decent DVD player for under $100 that gives me more $$$ to buy DVD's with. Thanks!

RE: Yikes!!!

I have a programmable five disk dvd player. To be honest, I have never programmed a workout since I bought it last Fall, even though I had intentions of doing so. Changing from dvd to dvd or chapter to chapter is so quick and simple that I haven't found the motivation to learn how to program. My dvd collection is growing quickly and I will probably work on my programming abilities soon, just to see how I like it and if it's really useful for me.

If you don't want to spend the funds at the moment for a programmable dvd player, my advice would be to get a reliable, basic single disk player. You will love the options that dvds offer, regardless of having or not having the programming capabilities. You can always upgrade down the road when you are ready. I really don't think that you will regret the transition to dvd one bit!

RE: Yikes!!!

Up until recently, the only Cathe tapes I owned were step aerobic tapes. I didn't really skip around in them per se, but if I felt like doing a workout longer than one tape, I would find myself taking a long break before starting the second one. (Even I can't figure out what's taking me so long in the bathroom!) Now, I'll be able to program my DVD's to start a second "tape" and I won't have that procrastination period adding a lot of time to my working out time.

I haven't tried the CTX series yet but by looking at it, I'm thinking that I would want to mix & match some of those. You might want to look at the summary of those to see if you share my opinion before you make up your mind about a DVD player.

One more thought...maybe on those days where you just don't feel like working out, programming a bunch of shorter workout sections might keep your workout livelier and more motivated.

Good luck with your decision! :-jumpy

I also took the plunge! I have all of Cathe's workouts on VHS and also bought them on DVD as soon as they were released. It was an expense but for me it was so worth it. I have no regrets...My husband thought I was insane!
