Troy Lite barbell question

Cathlete
For those of you with Troy Lite barbells: can you use typical metal plates with the bar or do you have to have the rubber coated ones? Would metal plates damage the bar?

Thanks for the info,
Becky

Hi Becky!! :7 :7 I think metal plates would scratch up the bar. I have one and the bar has some kind of black coating on it that will scratch up easily.

Someone else can chime in though.

Thanks, Dani! That's what I was afraid of. I want a new bar but I don't want to have to buy new plates. Ugh.

well, if you don't mind it getting scratched, then it wouldn't be a big deal. Mine was already a little scratched when I received it anyway. I wouldn't think metal plates would scratch it anymore than the metal spring clips that hold the weights on. :)

Hmmm...food for thought, Evily. I don't mind a little scratching, I just don't want to gouge the rubber or anything. Thank ya for your input! :)

The coating on the bar is not rubber - it's very thin, like paint. It's destined to become scratched sooner or later. :)

For those of you interested in a cheap alternative to Troy Lite bars...I bumped a thread from long ago regarding a cheap look alike (it's in the video/dvd forum). I bought two when they were on sale for $15.99 each INCLUDING shipping. I noticed they went up to $29.99 so it's not quite as good of a deal, but shipping wasn't too much if I remember correctly. I like mine. I hate to switch weights during workouts, so I keep various loaded bars handy.

I think the rubber-coated weights are SOO much better than the metal ones, they are worth the investment. My metal plates rusted, but that will never happen with rubber plates.

Briee, I like to keep a couple loaded barbells handy too. I haven't been able to do that in a quite a while, though. My current barbell has threaded collars that aren't perfectly tooled, so it's extremely difficult to change weights. Mainly I'm just looking for a bar that uses spring loaded collars and thought Troy Lite might be a good option. Thanks for the info. I'll try to find that other thread.

Becky

P.S. Kathryn, there's no way I can afford new plates at this point, but the bar needs to change.

Lunacat, this barbell set comes with the rubber plates that Kathryn is speaking of. I LOVE them. They also use the spring load clips at the ends. I would lose my mind if I had to "unscrew" a bar to change weights (well - more than I already have). If you get two sets at 29.99 each...the shipping would be free!! Just a thought - 160 lbs of rubber weights and two barbells-how cool is that. A girl can't have too many barbells ya know!!

Thanks Briee! Do you happen to have a link handy for that deal?

Becky

ETA: Um, never mind. I used that whole "search feature" thing and whadaya know, found the info! :+ Thanks again Briee.

You can unless you are anal and can't stand the different types co-existing on the same bar. Happens, you know? Don't tell Briee that I got my biceps veins okay? The fact that I used working day labor in my yard to do so is beside the point. Is this the day I saw down that poor ugly tree in my front yard or will that make me look like a she-man? :D

Rather than add one of those long links that make the post weird I am saying this here and post the link below in a new post.

This was $20.00 bucks with $5.00 shipping if memory serves. The shipping is $6.00 or $7.00 bucks now but it's still a great deal:

I got mine at Walmart .I got a Danskin Barbell .I forget the price but if you have a walmart its worth checking them out .

You're welcome Lunacat....go get that bar!!!!

Bobbi...you are kidding right????? I've got 44 acres and probably a million trees and there is nothing that would make my dh happier than my cutting all the firewood for this winter...just for a bicep vein. BUT....I don't believe it...you're gonna have to prove this one. I will send you my email and I want unaltered close up pictures of this so-called vein with your face attached to the arm of said vein. NO running to AJ's to borrow her arm with your picture attached.

You know how crazy this makes me don't youx( x( x( ????? And to think...I was going to tell you that I've missed you, but now I'm too irritated.

How about this lady.....I got my squat rack, actually a complete "cage" for heavy squats with the most awesome pullup bar at the top with altered handgrips, but I'd trade it in a minute for biceps veins. You snot, how could you! That's it....you can't be an ecto anymore....so there.:p :p :p :p

Why couldn't I have read this yesterday as I cut down a tree with a handsaw and removed the stump with a handsaw, a large screw driver, a small trowel and a shovel and my small, but cut, arms had bulging veins? I have a cell phone since last Sunday and I can upload pics to the 'net. I have the vein, Briee, but if you placed my arm next to AJ's, it would just be laughable. I'm lean, baby, but as far as I am concerned I got schnookered in the muscle department and these should be huge but they are not. *raspberry sound* And I'm the ultra ecto, the uber ecto but I am on the go go, on a roll, organizing so we can put in new kitchen floors and French doors and paint this old house. Forty-four acres and no bicep vein? Briee!
