Traveling out of Country

Hi Cathe and Friends:

I am traveling to France for 10 days. The problem is I won't be able to use my tapes (I will miss these the most!!!) Any suggestions on how I can keep fit while traveling abroad. My husband said we will be walking at least 15 miles a day site-seeing. I want to keep my strength in tact though. I did purchase workout bands (3 bands of different strengths). Any suggestions on how often I should use this and should I do sit ups to keep my upper body toned (daily)?

Don't want to lose what I have gained...Please help.

Thanks and Bonjour!

Hi Marla,

I too am going on a long vacation this summer ( 18 days) without Cathe or my weights :'(. Several of the gals here at the Forum advised me to get some bands and tubing. I run so I'll definatlely do alot of that, push ups, walking lunges ( maybe while holding some luggage) and a tubing/band workout that I saw outlined in a fitness mag. I am at the moment lifting VERY SLOW and HEAVY, attempting to build up a bit. I have been on this slow/heavy thing for 12wks and plan on continuing for the next 10 weeks or so--varying the sets, excersises, and alternating between Bodymax, MIS, and PS series---using that pause button ALOT, to slow everything down. I have been able to lose 5lbs. and gain some much needed muscle. Yahoooooo! :-jumpy:-jumpy:-jumpy Hopefully, with all this work I'll be able to keep most of my muscle, add definition, and keep my weight down ( maybe a couple of pub pounds :-wink) and ultimately enjly my once in a lifetime vacation. Hope you can do the same!! Good Luck!!!! DebD

Believe me, walking alone can give you more than enough cardio! That is the main thing I do on vacation, but I use music tapes. Just pack youy shoes and socks and tapes and player, then pack your tubing, and you will have enough to stay fit over vacation. Please don't underestimate the power of that tubing! I just did leg extentions with my Lex Loop(a new product from Spri which is an Xering with cuffs), and it was great!

Comment allez vous?
I have a band workout that I could tear out of my last Oxygen mag and send to you, if you would like. It features Debbie Kruck ( who is fabulously fit ) and has band exercises for a full body workout. If you would like to have it, my e mail is [email protected]. Send me your address and I'll send you the pages.
Au revoir..
Amy

Dear Amy,

Is that the chick in the blue-jean cut offs? I cut that out too to use while in England this summer. Good call. I tore it out and put it amongst my things to pack. I agree with HB on this one-- a good pair of running/walking shoes/push-ups/sit-ups/tubing...and your set! THEN when we get home our new Cathe tapes should be in the mail! Our muscles will love us for the break and new rotation. DD

Hi Marla! How exciting! As for keeping fit, walking 15 miles a day will be a heck of workout. Unless you are currently walking 15 miles a day, then you can be sure that this will be a challenging workout for you. As for strength, your body will not lose strength gains that fast, so here are a few maintenance exercises that will keep you in great condition.

Do the following mini workout once every three days:

1) 5 minutes of ab work

2) A set of as many push ups as you can

3) Three sets of 20 dips off the end of a chair or coffee table

4) 3 minutes of non-stop free standing(meaning using no weights)squats

5) 2 sets of 20 free standing front lunges(per leg)

6) 2 sets of 20 free standing back lunges(per leg)

7) Fill up a duffle bag (you're bound to have this on vacation)with a few heavy books and do 2 sets of 15 reps of one arm rows (per arm). Simply lean over on a chair for support, reach down and grap the strap handles, and start rowing.

Have a wonderful time!

Thank you Cathe and everyone! I am looking forward to my vacation but I will look forward to coming home and getting back in my regimen. Cathe, I am printing your recommendation for keeping fit; thanks so much for responding, I know you are very busy and your responding is greatly appreciated.

Yes! That's the one! If only I could look that good in a pair of shorts that short...oh well, that's what goals are all about.
Have a great time in England!
Amy

Dear Cathe,

I know comparisons are odious, but I defy any other video fitness instructor to be as considerate of her clients. You have a gift. I wish I could gift you as well as you have gifted me ( I know that so many here feel the same way). May you continue to have the success you now enjoy. Thank you. Deb Dailey

RE: Traveling: Try "AQUABELLS"?

Hi, Marla! You have my undying envy to be travelling out of the country!

In addition to the other suggestions, you may want to invest in some "Aquabells" - these are a plastic dumbbell-shaped set of thingies that you can pack up in your suitcase for the trip, fill up with water when you get to your destination, and use them for weighted resistance work for upper and lower body. Then you empty them out and pack them for the trip back home. I believe you can fill them up to a total of 15 lbs. each bell. I learned of these in the Northwest Airlines "Skymall" catalog (www.skymall.com); I'm sure they have their own direct marketing website but I don't know what the web address is. If I had to travel I'd probably get a set myself - I hate going without my weight-lifting!

Good luck!

Annette
