Thyroid - anyone have experience with thyroid problems?

I've been told for a few years that I should get my thyroid checked, but I just kept putting it off. Well, yesterday, a spiritual healer (yes, I believe in energy healing) told me, quite seriously, that I should have my thyroid checked. He said that it isn't functioning properly and looks "pimply". He said that this isn't something I should try to heal through holistic or naturopathic methods and recommended a medical professional, but he did say he didn't think it was cancer.

With that said, I started my research on diseases of the thyroid and plan on setting an appointment with my doctor (I might even call today and leave a message just so I don't have to worry about calling from work).

What spurred the healer to tell me this was that I asked him, "Why can't I lose weight?" I feel like I've tried everything and no matter what I do, the weight will not come off. If I do lose a few pounds, it comes right back on and then some. I've tried exercising a lot, a little, intermittently, strength with cardio, all cardio; low glycemic diets, supplements, food enzymes, vitamins, counting "points" (WW), etc. My food choices may not be perfect, but they are the best they've ever been...and yet I've gained 5 pounds in the past 6 months. I am caffeine-free, drink lots of water, very little soda, eat very little sugar, and ingest no artificial sweeteners. Yet, I am now the heaviest I've ever been. The best success I've had was when I did a cleanse last year, but even so, 3 months after completing the cleanse, all the weight was back on. I felt better, though, so all was not in vain. So, please no advice on diet, supplements, and exercise: I've pretty much tried them all.

So, I had already come to the conclusion that a medical reason exists for why I am not losing weight, so when this guy told me yesterday about my thyroid, I was like, "Well, it makes sense."

I've looked at all the thyroid diseases and disorders, and while what he described sounds like "nodules", my symptoms aren't in line with that diagnosis. That doesn't mean I don't have them, though. I have several symptoms of hypothyroidism, and 3 out of 5 obvious symptoms of goiter, but also have a couple of hyperthyroidism symptoms. MOst indications point to "hypo" and goiter, possibly both.

At this point, thank you for reading this far. Here's what I'd like to ask: Has anyone had experience with these conditions? What can I expect during an examination? What kind of recovery can I expect from treatment? Should I see a specialist or is my family doctor sufficient? What have been your experiences? Did you start losing weight after the condition was treated? What other general information do you want to share?

Thank you for taking time out of your Easter Sunday and eating marshmallow Peeps to help me. Happy Easter, everyone!

RE: Thyroid - anyone have experience with thyroid probl...

Well, first of all Happy Easter to you. In my opinion a lot of women have thyroid issues. There is a blood test you can take I believe. I was very sleepy and my hair was dry and thin. Yes I do carry a few extra pounds but my Dr didn't think my thyroid was the problem.
I know the thyroid is very important and controls a lot of other things going on in your body. Get checked see your Doctor. I am on sythroid 1.25 and feel pretty good but when I start feeling very tired I get it checked. It took a while to find the right dose for me.
So see your doctor and don't try to figure this out by yourself.
Best to you

Catwoman, many of us here on the Cathe boards have hypothyroidism. The incidence of it among the women I know is actually amazingly high. It is very easy to live with. The doctor just prescribes synthroid, which is a synthetic thyroid hormone, and you can live a perfectly normal life. I take a very low dosage pill every morning, about a half hour before breakfast, and have been doing so for decades.

I don't know as much about hyperthyroidism. It does seem to be less common, and I know it requires more treatment than hypothyroidism.

Good luck with your doctor's appointment.

I have hypothyroidism - diagnosed about 4 years ago. For me, my symptoms were depression and constipation. Once I got on the synthroid, the change was almost immediate.

I can't say that I experienced weight issues with it. It came on right after I had my daughter and took 2 years to figure out there was something wrong. (When I was constipated for 2 weeks straight and wasn't able to fix the problem with fiber therapy). I was able to drop the weight that I'd gain when I'd pay attention and exercise.

I think that everyone experiences it differently. Your family doctor will be sufficient. It's an extremely common disease and fairly easily controlled. I have to get blood tests every 6 months to make sure the levels are good, and if needed - adjust the prescription.

I also think that there is a crossover in symptoms between hypo and hyper, so let your doctor figure it out.

Catwoman, I would definitely recommend you go to a doctor or practitioner who specializes in bioidentical hormones. I had the same situation a year ago (after standard doctors failed to recognize the issue for more two years).

What was key about the doctor I went to was that he looked at the entire endocrine system as a whole. I had not only hypothroidism but also adrenal fatigue. He pointed out (rightly) that even if the doctor had treated my thyroid symptoms I would have still had the same difficulties if I had not treated the adrenals as well.

I have spent a year on a very low dosage of Armour Thyroid, Cortef (for adrenals), and testosterone and progesterone cream for hormone imbalance and I feel 100% better. I have leaned out by 21 pounds. The doctor noticed immediately at my 1 year checkup.

I wish you the best of luck!
