The Most Depressing Movie EVER?!?

The most horrifying, depressing, sad movie I have ever seen in my entire life is Schindler's List. That period of time was arguably the ugliest, most disgusting face of humanity (or lack of) and tragedy this planet has ever seen. Nothing hurts my heart more than the Holocaust, and this movie just did me in.

I almost picked up the book the other day, but decided not to put myself through that emotional turmoil again.

I was going to name both of these also!! Even though it is one of the darkest movies I've ever seen, I really do appreciate RFAD and it's one of my favorite movies....though I do need to follow it up with a dose of something mindless like Real Housewives or Project Runway! Darren Aronofsky actually directed this and The Wrestler, not to mention The Fountain which was also pretty depressing.

The Mist was depressing and I've been traumatized since I've seen it. Every time I see mist, I get goose bumps and expect something to come eat me.

Donnie Darko was pretty depressing IMO. Also, I cried like a baby during the entire run of P.S. I Love You; I might have taken 10 min breaks here and there but that movie was just emotionally draining.
 
Another vote for "Requiem for a Dream". It was a very good movie but very sad. The image of one of the end scenes vividly sticks in my mind. It really is an eye opener to people who think that addiction is mind over matter.
 
"Heartburn" - omg, I was SOOOOOOO sad after seeing this movie and it was many years ago!! But, it was kinda worthwhile to see Meryl sing in that one. She is just amazing.

"Up" made me cry a lot. I've never sobbed like the way I did in the beginning of that movie. But, I found it very uplifting in the end.

Hmmmmm. I can't recall any other depressing movies. I try to stay away from those types of movies.

ETA: Agree with "Requiem for a Dream."

Oh, and I recently watched "The Reader" and was so heart broken at the end. I watched Revolutionary Road and The Reader in the same night and found The Reader to be way more depressing and heart wrenching.

ITA! RFAD is really hard to watch, but I've seen it several times because it's so darned good. I have never even tried drugs, but I am completely fascinated by many drug and/or alcohol related movies and TV shows (RFAD, Breaking Bad, Cocaine Cowboys, etc.).

"The Mist" stayed with me for a long time after I saw it. I have never seen "Donnie Darko" (I know, I know).

These are all movies I really like, but I cry a lot during Steve Martin's "Shopgirl" every time I watch it, as well as "Proof" (which I think is a really good movie!), "28 Days" (the rehab movie, not the zombie movie), "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?," and "Mask" (the Cher movie, not the Jim Carrey movie).

Yes, that ending is so sad. And the way each of the four main stars curl up into a fetal position during the movie's climax, wow, just thinking about it gives me chills. Man, that movie is draining. But it's so well done.
 
Another movie that totally did me in was "Marley and Me". I read the book and cried for hours after I finished it. I knew I shouldn't have gone to see the movie... I have a Yellow Lab who's 9 yrs old and starting to slow down a little...need I say more? I cried through probably the entire last half of the movie and couldn't stop crying afterward. I tried watching it again a couple months later at home and the same thing happened.... Cute movie, but they just dragged out the death scene a little too long....and because of that I can never watch it again!

Requiem for a Dream is by far the most depressing movie I have ever seen.

Melissa - I have always avoided watching Schindler's List because I thought it would be too disturbing for me - content like that would haunt me for weeks. I recently read a children's book about the Holocaust and it was so horrifying to read...like you said, the lack of humanity was just appalling and it's very difficult for me to believe that something like that could actually happen. :(

The Mist bothered me for weeks but I have to add another movie not mentioned...... The Wicker Man by Nicholas Cage. This move seriously had me depressed.

The movie Precious actually left me disqusted. It wasn't a good movie and had horrible content. :mad:

The original movie was really good as well (though it had a few corny 60's things in it).

I hear you, I cried at the tv trailer! How bad is that. It just hit me, that girls face was just so sad. No kid should be that miserable.
 
Agreed with The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Cold Mountain, . . . Steel Magnolias, Legends of the Fall, and Bridges of Madison County make me cry like a little girl. I am Legend, . . I don't know why I keep watching that movie too cause I did not really like it, . .liked the book more.
 
The Other Side of the Mountain... the one about the paraplegic skier. I never cry at movies. I just don't. But this stupid little movie had me doing that kind of crying where you do the big heaving sobs. The original movie, not part two. I thought maybe I was just in a special mood but years later I caught it on the late, late show and was determined that I would not cry and, yep, it happened again. Beats me.
 
The Seventh Sign with Demi Moore, I started crying in the first 5 minutes and never stopped. I was depressed for days after watching Cold Mountain, I loved Judd Law in it but have never been able to bring myself to watch it again. About the only movie that I have ever seen DH tear up at was My Girl, anyone remember that one?
 
O.k., you guys are probably going to laugh...but I cried all the way though...Babe. Yup, I'm a sucker for animal films, I tear up when they are cute and cry when they die. I was in tears from the very beginning when Babe said goodbye to his mom as they were taking her off to slaughter.

I also cried all the way through The Perfect Storm. I cried from the opening credits when they showed that wall with all the ships and crews that have gone down to the ending credits. I freakin' hate crying at movies. That's why my favs are always martial arts or horror films.
