The Most Depressing Movie EVER?!?

House of Flying Daggers.

I kept waiting for the happy ending that never came in that one. Visually, a very cool movie though.

I won't watch I Am Legend because of the dog. I made my sister give me the spoiler after she saw it. I just don't need that crap.

Yep! Depressing! I am a SAP so many movies make me cry but I Am Legend got me good because I have German Shepherds! I watched Monsters, Inc. last night for the second time 'cause DH had not seen it. I am such an idiot because I always cry when Boo has to go home. :)

There was an alternate ending that I saw online that would have made the movie so much better. I did not understand why they did not use it.

Well, I'm still completely traumatized by that cartoon "Up". I watched it with DH last week and if we even discuss it we start crying. It really ended ok and all, but the first few minutes basically ripped out my heart and then later on during a scene with a scrap book, I started bawling again. It was too much for my hormonal self. ;)

Whoever mentioned 28 Days Later - Do you mean 28 Days? 28 Days Later is about man eating zombies which I guess could be kind of depressing. ;) It's one of my favorite movies though. I thought it was so well put together for a horror movie.

Liann...I loved 28 Days Later, too! I own it. Normally, I hate these kinds of movies, but this one had such a strong social statement. Did you see the alternate endings? Those were depressing.

Gayle...good! Never watch it. The fact that his only friend left in life is the German Shepherd he raised from a puppy (who his daughter handed him just before she died in front of his eyes)...and then he has to kill him with his bare hands. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?

Spoiler alert, people...I'm glad he dies at the end. At least he can be with his wife, his kid, and the dog.

If you haven't seen this movie and are a dog lover, BEWARE. I wish I had known. :(

I know what you mean. The dog thing was just heart wrenching.

"Hotel Rwanda" with scenes of mass genocide.

"Gorillas in the Mist" (when Segourney (sp?) Weaver's character finds the male gorilla with his head, feet and hands hacked off, I started weeping hysterically in the movie theater. The only movie that's ever done that to me).

Another movie with Sarah Jessica Parker's hubby in about chimpanzees being used as test subject in military tests of radiation poisoning (based on real tests : I've met the guy who was involved in them, then later quit to become involved in the anti-vivisection movement). They 'prettied up' the testing equipment and some other things, but some scenes were so sad.

(These kinds of moves are most depressing to me, because I know the cruelty and pain shown in them is based on something that really happened).

Project X...that was sad! I think I can take any movie as long as it doesn't involve something awful happening to animals. I can't take it.

I'm not much of a movie watcher, but some of the most depressing movies I've ever seen were:

Legends of the Fall

Mystic River

and..this one's probably silly, but it was disturbing to me: Star Wars Episode III (I can't remember the name of that one, but it's the one where Anakin turns into Darth Vader)

Erica

But Titanic was based on an infamous true story! Were you expecting the ship NOT to sink? I really thought they were somehow going to survive in A Perfect Storm - I was shocked when they all bit it.

I agree with you on both counts morningstar! I never did understand the hype with Titanic. I truly questioned whether I am missing the "girly" gene when I didn't like and get weepy with that one!

With A Perfect Storm, I was SURE they were going to make it out. I was upset after that one!

Carrie...don't get me wrong. I didn't shed a tear in this movie. I was just so depressed. To hear stories about the Titanic is one thing....but to watch it being played out for 3 hours (and pretty convincingly despite a not-so-convincing story line between Kate and Leo)...OMG! I think the scene that got me was the string quartet that continued to play until the very end...and then they got up and calmly shook hands and parted to go try to save themselves from an inevitable fate.

PS...How in the WORLD do you manage to survive 3 hours or horror only to freeze to death because you and your girlfriend couldn't figure out how to balance on a piece of wood clearly big enough for 2 people. Are you kidding me?!?

It was disturbing to DD because Anakin lost his hotness. :p

The most horrifying, depressing, sad movie I have ever seen in my entire life is Schindler's List. That period of time was arguably the ugliest, most disgusting face of humanity (or lack of) and tragedy this planet has ever seen. Nothing hurts my heart more than the Holocaust, and this movie just did me in.

Lol, you know it's going to sink, but you still end up kind of rooting for it. A Perfect Storm was based on a true story too. I already knew they were going to bite it because the actual event had only happened 9 years earlier and I remembered the news reports. Still found myself rooting for them though.

If we're talking about fiction, I agree wholeheartedly with the mention of "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas." The fiction movie that made me cry the most during and after is "Requiem For A Dream."

For documentaries, I cry during almost all of them.

Yes! Great movie.

I agree, "The Wrester" was a really good movie.

Have you guys seen "Beyond The Mat"? It's a wrestling documentary and one of its subjects, Jake the Snake, served as the 'inspiration, if you will, for the writer of "The Wrestler." It's very sad, but a good movie.

"The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" had me sobbing too.
