The insurance denied my pre-authorization for orthotics.........

:( }( Now I have to call the doctors office tomorrow and see if they said why. I may call and see what I can do. With my luck they will pay for the surgery but that won't solve the problem since the mechanics of my foot is off too. The problem will just come back.:( I am not sure we can pay for the outright.

Plus I now have to have 4 teeth filled. UGH!! I am just falling apart and to think on Saturday(13th) I will turn 40 what a present I am getting.

I will let you know how it goes with the insurance and the doctors office.

Hi Annette,

Insurance can be such a big problem! My mom works for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield and always tells me about the ridiculous procedures they authorize and others that people need badly that take forever to authorize or don't get through at all. I hope it goes well at the doctor!40 could be the start of something new and fabulous, so don't discount it just yet!

Mine told me they wanted me to try OTC orthotics first. Find out if that is why, and then tell them you've tried and they don't work. I don't know if you have tried, but I have, and...well they don't work!

My orthotics are going to be $350. I told my Dr. to go ahead and do them because I am going to want them whether insurance covers it or not. It is expensive, but if they aren't right you can bring them back for adjustment or whatever they call it. You buy some expensive ones from the Good Feet store, and they don't work, they'll just tell you tough titty.

Doesn't that make you so mad. They will pay to slice you but not for preventative messures! I got my first pair in '99 at $250.00 and my last pair last Spring at $425.00 and they still wouldn't pay. I have had three pairs! My very unstable feet continue to change in spite of my less rigorous cardio and the foot specialist told me I need to stretch the now ailing right foot buy a ridiculous contraption off the web to keep my foot flexed while I sleep. (Sigh...) And that's it! I know somethings going on with that foot and I want to fix it but it looks like nothing will happen until I develop PF or the arch goes. So I am back to my podiatrist! LOL!

It was sort of funny because I asked the orthopedist about taping my right arch for balance during yoga since taping was very effective in the past but I don't do it well. He didn't know how but the podiatrist was in the office and I got to see him-two doctors for the price of one! LOL! He was the podiatrist who made my first orthotics and he taped my foot very well. Taping, if you can do it, is amazing. It creates stability in the same way as an orthotic, stabilizing the plantar facsia, and I am hoping I can deconstruct this tape job and then do it myself for both feet if I have to! I am so frustrated! I know I should't workout through pain but if the alternative is not working out, what then?

I was lamenting all the people with good, stable, neutral feet who don't want to use them and here I, am eager to go, and my feet hate exercise!

Hang in there, Annette! I hope you get everything worked out to your satisfaction! And remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! ;)

Hello,
I was just wondering why you need orthotics. If you have posted why before I must have missed it.
I will tell you my story--you will probably think I am nuts--but here goes anyway. I went to the podiatrist last year around this time. I explained how I was having trouble with my plantar facia. Every few months I would experience extreme pain along the entire bottoms of my feet and would have to take a couple of weeks off to let my feet heel. He recommended getting Superfeet inserts for my shoes at the local medical supply store. I did. They cost $27 a pair. I bought 2 pair. One pair for my everyday shoes and one pair for my workout shoes. Yes, my feet seemed to feel better. But after about 6 months I wanted to add running to my workouts. After only 3 attempts using the couch potato to 5k from the coolrunnings website program--which meant running 60 seconds then walking 90 seconds for 20 minutes with a 5 minute walk to warmup and a 5 minutes walk to cool down--my plantar facia began to hurt and my ankles and knees and hips all began to hurt. I decided to stick with step aerobics and that I would never be able to run without pain. Also at this time I began experiencing pain in my knees while doing my weight workouts and had decided I would no longer be able to do leg presses, squats, and lunges. At least not without knee pain.
My feet kept hurting even without the running so I decided I needed new shoes and inserts. I even posted on this forum asking about good shoes to workout in. I spent $100 on new shoes and inserts. Wore them for a day and was still in pain and so I took them back and got a refund. Then I got on the runners world forum and put in a search for "shoes". One of the posts that came up talked about how todays running shoes are not good for promoting good running form. There also was a link to a web site that promoted running barefoot: runningbarefoot.org I checked out the web site and haven't worn shoes since.
It has been 6 weeks and my feet feel and look terrific. They are healthy and strong. I do my weight workouts (including leg presses, squats, and lunges), step workouts, and run--yes I can now run and am up to 1 mile--barefoot. And I have no pain!!! I wouldn't have believed this could happen if I was not experiencing it myself. Without shoes you learn to walk and run differently with much less stress to your entire body. You go ball/heel/ball rather than heel/ball/heel. Plus without shoes on all the muscles, ligaments, and bones in your feet actually get a workout every time you move.
I used to think I was strong and healthy and that my feet were my only downfall. Now my feet are probably stronger and healthier than the rest of my body. I know I will take a lot of critism on this forum for saying barefoot is better and healthier, but for me I know this is true. And it didn't cost me anything to prove it to myself. That is more than I can say for all the shoe companies out there trying to sell me the perfect shoe.
My four boys ages 12,9,6,and 3 have also been barefoot for the last 6 weeks and are loving it. I never have to tell them to put their shoes on so we can go for a walk. We amaze ourselves each time we take a walk and realize how much easier it gets. It takes time for your foot pads to thicken so that you can comfortable walk on any surface without discomfort. But each day it gets better and better.
You may just read this post and decide I am crazy. And that is fine. But I am so sick of reading these posts about how everyone is having to spend money and get surgery and cortisone shots to fix the problems that shoes have made for them. Just remember people that don't wear shoes don't usually need to go to a foot doctor. Foot doctor's are for those who wear shoes.
Just my 2 cents--take it or leave it.
Heather--Having a great barefoot day!

I love to go barefoot but only in the summer,it is too cold here in the winter to go barefoot, you must live in a warm climate. Of course everybody else says to not go barefoot if you have PF and yes that is what I have plantar fascitis. I have been dealing with this since October of last year. I have 3 boys myself and 1 of which hates to wear shoes,LOL!! Maybe he is doing himself a favor. I will have to give working out barefoot a try, though I am in alot of pain now and my foot hurts worse with no shoe on. I also have a mechanics problem with my foot. The big toe is set lower on my foot so my foot actually has to turn out in order to be flat (for the other 4 toes to lay flat) so I appear to have a much higher arch than I actually do if my foot were to set correctly. The doctor said that I have a great foot for exercising but that the turn out would make me prone to ankle sprains.

Thanks for the input!:)
