The Better Fruits?

I know that some fruits are better for you than others (all the ones I like are more fattening), but I can't remember off the top of my head which ones. A co-worker was eating up to 2 bananas a day and her mom told her that wasn't a good idea. BUT...I must say, it's better than all the other crap she's been eating, so I want to encourage her to keep it up.

So what fruits are better for you than others (meaning less sugar, etc.)?

Thanks!

Suz

All I read for women my age (43) in perimenopause say keep bananas to a minimum because of sugar content. I was using a banana every day in my Protein Drinks and found that once I stopped using them so often that my blood sugar stayed level until my next meal (2-3 hrs later).
So far thats really I've read to avoid and again it is the suggestion based on my age.

Im believe apples and peaches are low glycemic. As far as apples, I believe Granny Smith's are lower than Red Delicious.

Suz,

If I remember correctly the highest fruits on the glycemic index (insulin spike/sugar) are ripe bananas, pineapples, raisins and watermelons.

Here is a small list of fruit and their glycemic indexes.

Apple
38

Orange
44

Peach
42

Banana
55

Watermelon
72

if you do a google on glycemic fruit indexes you will find a wealth of info.

berries are always a great choice. I like bananas on w/o days.

I am over fifty, and I can lose weight eating up to two bananas a day, although I usually don't eat two. However, I have a banana every morning with my oatmeal. The other fruits I eat are berries, apples, oranges, cherries, watermelon and plums. I have never paid much attention to the glycemic index, and I have always lost weight when I combined a a good nutrition plan and cardio and strength training.

The best are berries (high in antioxidants and low glycemic, also contain pectin, a fiber that helps you feel full and keeps you regular), pears, peaches, apples (all lower glycemic, and containing pectin).

Higher glycemic fruits (bananas, watermelon) are better mixed with some protein/fat, like bananas in a smoothie (I like to cut up ripe bananas and put them in baggies in the freezer, taking out chunks to put in my vega chocolate smoothies).

Thanks for all your replies. I know that if she would work out and eat sensibly, that would solve her problems. But I can guarantee you she won't work out and she most likely won't eat much that's good for her. That's why I was hoping to at least encourage her with good fruits instead of those filled with too much sugar. :)

I agree with what's been said by others, and was going to give you the same list that Melody gave you. HOWEVER, everything is relative. I don't eat watermelon, pineapple or bananas, but I would be very happy to see my DH eat any of those things instead of chocolate-covered raisins (his favorite snack). If those fruits satisfy someone with a sweet tooth, I'd rather have them eat fruit over cookies and candy any day.
