Summer trip - Yosemite/Lake Tahoe

Well, we've ditched our plans for the beach next summer for a Griswold trip out west:D Since DH watched the PBS shows about National Parks, he's salivating to go to some - and me too!

We are in the planning phases of flying out (no Griswold drive past the largest ball of twine, etc) to either Vegas or Reno. I originally intended to fly to Vegas and then drive down to Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP and then up to Yosemite and back. An RV forum I belong to recommended flying into Reno and taking in Lake Tahoe and then go south to Yosemite (and perhaps pass up the other two NPs)

I'm seeking thoughts or opinions from you west coasters or anyone having gone to any of these places. We are planning on getting a campsite at Yosemite FIRST as these usually book up within 5 min. of the opening reservation day (YIKES!) and then booking the rest of the trip around it. Renting an RV.

Yosemite is definitely a stopping place. Any thoughts on Lake Tahoe? Things to do? We are not big boaters and was wondering what there is to do around the south side of Lake Tahoe (other than take in the gorgeous scenery - wow!)

We are really excited to see Yosemite - sounds jaw dropping phenomenal.

When are you planning in making this drive? The reason I ask is that the Tioga Pass generally opens after Memorial Day weekend. However, if it's an unusually high snowfall this year, then chances are that the Pass won't open until sometime in June.

Having said that, Yosemite is my absolute favorite Park to visit. Lots of things to do and lots of rocks to climb and trails to explore. :)

Lake Tahoe is also beautiful. I haven't been there in the summer, but am sure it's a great place for water sports and hiking.

I HIGHLY recommend you reserve your camp spot NOW in Yosemite. They quickly fill up months in advance.

Happy hiking. :)

Thanks, Lorrayne. I've read about Tioga Pass and realize it's a challenge and not open until sometimes in June. We wouldn't be going over until June 5-7th or so...so,I guess we're hopeful

And, yes, I realize Yosemite is hard to get into. We can start calling at 7am on Jan. 15th for the time spot that we'll be there. Some say they book up within 5 minutes...yuck!

Thanks for your input!

We went there for a family reunion in June 2006. We started in Yosemite and stayed in a lovely hotel that wasn't at all hotelish if that makes sense. It was on the south end of the Yosemite Park entrance, outside the park. It was really very nice and you felt more like you were at home than in a hotel. Then we went white water rafting one day and went hiking the MANY trails through the park the second day. My brother lives in Reno and has great knowledge of Yosemite, Reno and Lake Tahoe. We were very lucky to have him help make good arrangements. We went to Reno and stayed at the Peppermill Casino. It was fine. Went to Larry the Cable Guy concert and drove up to Virginia City and man it's just beauty like I've never seen before and then you get to the VA city, the western city part. Awesome. We took a day trip up to Tahoe and took a sail on a catamaran. Tahoe is really awesome. If you go to Tahoe, even in June, take a jacket. Nearly froze my butt off on the boat. We went horseback riding. That was only ok. The trail ride was not very exciting.

Yosemite was awesome. Don't miss out on the white water rafting. Great fun!
Have a great time there.

If you go during the week and not on the weekends, it's usually not that difficult to get a site. Are you looking at a place like Curry Village or one of the hotels? Weekends get tough, but I've often made reservations a few days before going. And if you're going early June - it's before the California schools are out, so you'll probably be fine. And yes, Yosemite is gorgeous - one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The falls will be gorgeous this year, and especially in June.

Looks as if we're going to get a lot of snow this year - it's an El Nino winter, so that means more rain/snow - which we desperately need. So, know that as well. If you plan to hike Half Dome, the cables may or may not be up - depending on the snow fall.

Tahoe is incredible, too. I love it up there. The Northern Side is quieter and more picturesque in my opinion, and I prefer to stay on the California side - near Tahoe City. The Nevada side is fun - with Casino's etc, but there is smoking everywhere including in restaurants - I can't stand that. There are great places to rent everywhere. You'll have fun. Enjoy your trip! Take pics - lots - and post them here.

I love Yosemite! I'd try to avoid it on weekends if possible as traffic jams can be a major headache depending on the season. We were there in October and stayed from Monday and left Friday and we were glad we did as the traffic coming in the park by Friday afternoon was a significant difference than the lack of it during the week! Definitely hit Mariposa Grove and visit the Awahnee Lodge, it's beautiful!

Another from CA and all the other posts are spot on ! Beautiful, loads to do and actually, probably two of the best places in the state for mountains and water/falls. Yep - that's why the camping/hotels fill so quickly ! :p

You will love it !

Thanks for the tips!

We will be camping in an RV and I think we will plan on attempting early to the middle of that week so perhaps it will be less crowded.

The older I get, the less I like crowds. That's why Disney is OUT - no interest. I'll take a camping trip to a national park anyday over that!

Thanks!

Not familiar with Yosemite..., but been to Tahoe many, many times.

Most of the ski resorts offer hiking, horseback riding, etc...on their trails during the summer seasons. The south shore of Tahoe has more activity to it. On the NV side you can do the casinos and shows, if you're into that. On the south shore, you have Heavenly, Sierra At Tahoe and Kirkwood. Heavenly is enormous and can easily take you several days to hike.

And if you're a seafood fan, I highly recommend Jakes on the Lake in Tahoe City. It's delicious and worth the drive! http://www.jakestahoe.com/

Have fun!
