Suggestions for Kickboxing???

Hey exercise lover! I'm like you......extremely loyal to Cathe but throw in different instructors once in a while to mix it up.

I tried Les Mills but found it a little repetative and maybe intermediate to advanced. It just didn't click with me unfortunately.

I bought the first 3 of Susan Chung and will def be buying her newest! She gives an awesome and challenging wkout. I love the pace, the moves and the metabolic weight work. She is an excperienced martial artist and fitness instructor and I love her demeanor. Excellent choice there!

Patrick new one was so much fun! He does the warmup then Heather takes over. She is up beat and energetic. I thoroughly enjoyed this!

Lastly I got Amy Bento kick, box and core surge. I did it 3 times and just didn't like it. She has some good moves, cueing was ok but I really didn't like the choreography which was dissappointing. The abs section was really good though. Goodluck with your new wkouts...I hope you enjoy them. I am loving kickboxing for total body work! It seriously works the core and you will see definition!

I guess that's maybe why Amy's was on sale, Tic93. I hate to return workouts, but I will if I don't like it too.

What is Susan's newest? If you get it, give a review, please. The one I have reminds me of my favorite Cathe kickbox from 4DS because of how she moves you around a lot (not so much standing there punching). My heart rate comes up when the legs are used. I got a good calorie burn according to my HRM.

Another thing I liked about Susan's workout is that she has a modifier on both sides of her! The guy is making the workout harder with more kicks while the lady on the other side is modifying for low impact. What a great idea!

So sorry I posted twice.....I am tired! I don't remeber the title of susans newest but I have no doubt its just as good! I like that she is a blackbelt and instructor too......you can tell! The moves are different from most, combos are interesting, abs and weights were challenging, even her stretch moves were a little different. All in all a very good choice to add to your library.

I think you will like Patricks too....nothing crazy or too difficult but you will work up a nice sweat. Def one of my faves too!

You've all convinced me to get Susan Chung's - I agree that changing instructor every so often is a good thing (obviously it's only ever a brief change ;) )
I've been doing some Ilaria Montagnani - I really felt them, even though they didn't get my heart rate up too high.

Justine

I posted a review of Susan's new release (Sweat). It's a great challenge, and she's an excellent instructor. Gives lots of form pointers.

Hey exercise lover, check out the review posted by "swimmer" in the open discussion forum. It's titled "a couple quick reviews". Thats Susan Chung's newest. Swimmer gave an excellent breakdown. I only have Susans FIRST 3 workouts but I have no doubt that her newest is just as good. I especially appreciate her personal experience coming through in her moves. As well as the fact that she has 2 people modifying, one making it a tad easier and the other "kicking" it up a notch. If you're wondering wether or not to get any from Susan....I say GO FOR IT! Consider yourself enabled. You won't be sorry you got them.;)

Aww, thanks tlc93. I agree---you will not be disappointed w/Susan's workouts. I have to admit, too, that I really like the guy who is part of her crew! He can crescent kick like a champ.

Ha, Ha I agree! I'm jealous! I can only do a knee crescent! I really do like her workouts! They are authentic and challenging. Gives me a goal! I have a heavy bag and love to use it. Hubby got me pink boxing gloves for Christmas. Nothing like punching and kicking the crap out of something!

Swimmer....based on your reviews, info and advice, I took advantage of todays Daily Deal and bought Cathe's MMA boxing wkout. I think I have a sickness......spend, spend, spend. I justify this purchase because I am returning the Amy Bento wkout. Makes sense right? Next purchase will be the newest Susan Chung!

Keep the reviews coming! They are extremely helpful!

I've ordered all Susan Chung's based on these reviews  Well - I had to pay the postage to the uk, so it makes it worthwhile buying them all in one go. Right?
Can't wait.
Justine

(PS having a tall girl in the class swung it for me - some moves are tough when you're 5'9" - that's my excuse)

I was wondering how Susan's workouts differ from each other? If I buy a second, it will be different enough so that I don't feel I'm doing the same workout? Know what I mean? Thanks for telling me about swimmer's post. I'll go read that right now! Enabler!

I'm actually interested in this, too. I bought RapidFire 3 based on this post and did it this morning--I loved it! Great workout! Now I want to buy the other 3, but before I do, I'm interested in how similar they each are.

BTW--RapidFire3 has LOTS of premixes! When I saw the premix screen I felt like I was looking at a Cathe DVD! Pretty exciting!

Hey

You've got me really excited now. I've looked at Susan Chung's clips on Collage a couple of times but have never bitten. Thanks for the reviews, I think I might have to go shopping. Love kickbox and I think my body needs shocking after Christmas! :)

I thought Ilaria's Powerstrike 6 was my favorite kickboxing workout until I got Patrick Goudeau's (or really Heather Corndorf's) Kickbox Burn. That was easily the winner for my Purchase of 2013 Award. It really is a great workout. It's fun, you work up a good sweat, and Heather is a great instructor.

I'm so glad to know this one from Patrick is so good! I bought this one too, but haven't tried it yet. Thanks for that review. Can't wait to try it.

I too LOVE the Patrick/Heather workout! It's not Imax type of hard but you do work up a nice sweat! As with any Kickbox...the instructor almost always says "you get out of it what you put into it". So with Patricks....I jab HARD! It really is a fun and fast paced (no dread) type of workout.

I can't really comment on the differences in Susans yet because I'm just learning them. I can say that she has a bonus bag segment on some but not all of them, and they all have an abs section. They have an easy to follow format with no kick, turn, kick jump craziness. That alone makes it easy to follow so you can concentrate on the move and give it power. Her cueing is not always there but you won't get lost (like I did w/ Amy Bento). Easy to modify too!

If you like any of Cathe's or Patricks kickbox you will def like Susan's. There is enough variety to keep your attention and YES...PREMIXES!!! Yeah! They are challenging and fun!:D

I tried out the second of the three non-Cathe KB workouts I purchased recently. I LOVED Susan Chang's Rapid Fire:Results and reviewed it earlier in this thread. Today I did Amy Bento's Surge and Core. I'll do Patrick Goddeau's Kickbox Burn next.

Workout selection is such a personal choice. I noticed one person in this thread likes Amy Bento and one returned this very workout! It's like Cathe's step workouts., I guess. Some like dancey step workouts and others like the athletic types. I actually really enjoyed Amy's workout today. She's absolutely nothing like Susan -- certainly NOT a black belt. That said, she's a lot of fun! The music was really good and motivating, and Amy made me laugh a couple times. I was looking for variety in these new-to-me instructors, and now I have at least two very different KB workouts. I worked up a good sweat and really used my lower body almost constantly (very little just standing and punching). The combos make you think, and she did leave me scratching my head a couple times. I love it that she has a lower-impact modifier behind her. That really helps me. The core workout was interesting and different. One review I read on Amazon said this workout has the LEAST spin and kick type moves of all Amy's workouts -- probably a good thing for me. I think I'll keep it! It's a good Saturday morning kind of workout.

All of you who ordered Susan Chung workouts PLEASE come back here and review them! I'd love to know which other ones to buy of hers. Also, if anyone knows please explain how they are different from each other. I'm interested in buying more of hers and would love some guidance.

I was wondering if the rapid fire 3 is similar with a cardio aspect like Cathes rock out knock out or her Hard strikes? I love them and want to get more like this!

I also purchased the addicted fitness DVDs they are heavy bag DVDs. I haven't tried it yet I have been sick, but I previewed and they look like it has good cardio in them as well!

I don't think Rapid Fire 3 is like Rockout Knockout. I really think Susan Chung is different from Cathe--and different from the other kickboxing trainers I love as well (Ilaria, Chalene Johnson). Structure-wise, I suppose it could be like Hard Strikes. Still very different tho. But Rapid Fire 3 is set up with 4 high energy kickboxing combo blocks that last about 30 minutes (not counting the warm up), then you get another 10 minutes of strength work and another 10 minutes of core work. Plus there is a heavy bag bonus. But IMHO, it is all very different from what Cathe creates. Which is good! I love variety!

Hello Cathletes! So, because I started this thread I wanted to help with the reviews. I suggest going to "advancedworkouts.com" or "videofitness.com" and look up Susan Chung. The reviews are pretty descriptive. There aren't a lot of reviews but I think that they give a good picture of what the wkout is like. As I said earlier I'm just learning them myself but from what I have done so far......they are awesome! I don't have her newest yet though.

I did "rock steady, rock hard" yesterday morning and just looked up the reviews......really accurate! If you have a heavy bag and want a dvd that uses it, make sure to check for it because the reviews don't always mention it. Of her 4, I think 2 have a bonus bag segment.

For Susan being someone fairly new to the "at home workout" world....she did an excellent job!

Excerciselover.....I'm glad you liked Amy Bento's! I agree that there were some nice moves and I almost kept the dvd for the ab section alone! It was really effective! But I just couldn't do parts of the choreography and got pretty frustrated with it. Make sure to post your thoughts on Patricks Kickbox burn.

The heavy bag segment in Rapid Fire 3 is good. Usually, I don't care for kicking the bag, but the way Susan incorporates kicks doesn't annoy me. I haven't tried the heavy bag bonus from Rapid Fire 1.
