substitution for platemates??

I haven't been able to buy STS yet, but I am trying to prepare for it while I'm saving up for it. I've looked into platemates and paceweights, but they are both kind of expensive, so I was wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper alternative. Do they make just plain magnets in 1/2 pound increments that you could use? If so, where could I get them? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know whether this is the answer you're looking for, but I'm doing just fine without the magnetic add-ons (can't use them anyway, as my weights are rubber/rubber-coated). I am using various ankle and wrist weights for the microloading. It takes some setup and I'm sure is a bit more time-consuming than the magnetic ones, but they work just fine.

For example, yesterday I was doing chest presses with 67 pounds. I put 60 pounds on the 5-lb bar, and then slid a rolled-up 1-lb wrist weight onto each end of the bar to create the weight that was called for on the workout card.

Thanks Nancy. I have wrist weights already, so that's good to know. What do you use for dumbells though?

For dumbbells I wear the weights. You're still lifting the same amount as you would with the magnetic weights, it's just on your arm rather than attached to the dumbbell.
