STS-thinking of shelving it. :(

Cathlete
So I finally did my 1RM's and started STS a few weeks ago. I completed the 3rd week of meso 1 on Sunday and haven't touched it since. Thinking of putting it on the shelf. I am leaving for a beach vacation tmrw and up until today was absolutely dreading it because in 3 weeks I had gained 5-7 pounds, bloated up like a balloon, lost my ab definition and felt like I was going to split my pants because my legs and rear end were so huge. I know about the whole water retention deal when you first start a heavier lifting program then what your body is used to but having it get increasingly worse with no end in sight for 3 weeks was just too much for me! I stopped and have been doing cardio only this week. The weight is dropping off now and my body is beginning to feel/look more like it's former self again though I'm still not totally there. So anyway, my point is...if this is what STS is going to do to me then I am not interested in finishing it but if you can honestly tell me that at some point all of the yucky stuff will turn around and I will likely be happy with the end result then I will give it another shot...but probably not until swim suit season is over.

Thoughts? TIA!

All I can tell you is the first time I did STS, the weight suddenly started falling off me around the last week of Meso 1/first week of Meso 2. I understand you not wanting to start again until after summer is over though!

I would not think meso 1 would create the same kind of water retention that heavier lifting does, the first phase is lighter and more circuit like to me. But if you went from no or real light lifting to meso 1, then I would guess that's possible. That stinks that your body reacted like that, I would stop too!

One question, did you do the other 3 days of cardio in addition to meso 1? If you were doing a lot of cardio before, then reduced it too much, maybe that's contributing to some of the issues. I'm really just guessing here of course :)

I really enjoyed STS, but my second round of it honestly did not produce any noticeable results, but that was my fault, my cardio was nearly non-existent, and my eating was bad. The first round though, I started seeing real body changes during meso 3. I don't remember having any kind of opposite desired effect like you are having with this.

I find this very interesting because I didn't have any of those issues with STS! Of course, I was already at goal weight when I started. I didn't budge a single pound either way and had just minimal changes in measurements, although my muscle definition improved. I'm assuming everyone responds differently when starting a new program. Sorry you had such a response! I hope you'll give it another try once you're back from vacation and give it time to see how your body responds long term.

Have a great vacation!

I lift heavy and have never gained weight like that. I think it almost has to be something else. Lifting weights may make you bloat for a few days, but not weeks on end. Very strange. And like Dela said, the first 4 weeks of Meso 1 is endurance training, not heavy weight lifting.

I'm sorry to hear you will be shelving STS. It is the best program put together to date. I know it's frustrating when you see weight gain, though, so I understand where you're coming from.

Thanks ladies...

To answer a couple questions....

Prior to STS I was in the habit of splitting up each work out into cardio and weights. I would work out for about an hour and do half cardio and half weights/toning. It was indeed very high rep/low weight lifting more often then not with things like BBL, Jillian, Jackie Warner, Tonique, etc. I did 1RM's for upper body and am lifting incredibly heavy compared to what I have been doing for the past several months so for me Meso 1 feels like a heavy weight lifting program as opposed to an endurance program. I have no time for cardio on STS weight days (no energy either) so I do 3 days of cardio and try to do an hour each time so time spent doing cardio is about the same as it was. It's just arranged differently.

I don't know if this adds any insight but I figured I would put the information out there just in case it's helpful.

Thanks again.

ETA:: I did a P90X rotation a few years back. I lifted heavy. I got awesome results so I am truly baffled. I never felt this way at all during that program. I love STS in terms of the work outs. I really want to be able to finish it. Oh and one other thought about the cardio...I have been forced in the past couple weeks to bring the impact down to almost nothing due to an injury. I know you can get a good cardio w/o with out impact but it's not what I am used to. Maybe this is having a negative effect???

It sounds like you are doing everything right, 3 days STS + 3 days cardio is exactly what was prescribed.

I don't think the low/high impact difference would make you GAIN weight.

Oh you know what though!? I forgot! I was doing Tonique too! I thought it would offset my tendency to get bigger legs from lifting anything heavier then 10# w/lower body and this was cutting into one of my cardio days. Not totally though as Tonique has a big cardio factor in it....Who knows. I am sooo confused! :p

Wendy, I am as confused as you:( (remember my post about my arms)? I stopped in the middle of Meso 2, and I am following your recommendation to use more reps/lighter weight. I actually dusted off Muscle Endurance and did the upper body pre-mix. I forgot how fun that whole workout is! When/if you decide to try the STS again, let us know the results. Good luck!

Yes, I do remember your arms post! Keep us posted on what happens with that. I hope my suggestions help you! My upper body (chest/arms/shourlders/back) was fine with the heavier weights in STS so I have no issue there but everything from my abs down apparently HATED it!!!! :(

Hi Wendy! I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling so bloated lately. While I don't think it's due to STS directly, I think it could be related to the fact that you are introducing your body to a new training approach. Your body will retain water as it acclimates to the new workouts....this is basically a natural body reaction to the recovery process. Because this system is so new to you and the fact that every workout is so different and you are lifting more weight than you typically were used to, there is most likely just a longer recovery and adaptation phase you are experiencing. Once you get the first mesocycle under your belt and find your groove in the program your muscles will recovery a little faster.

Other things to consider is if you are eating higher sodium foods, having your menstrual cycle, not drinking enough water per day (especially in the summer), not working out as intensly with your cardio or currenly experiencing a lot of stress or change in your life. Many of these elements add up to water weight gain.

You mention that you are injured, and I truly am sorry to hear that, Wendy :(

But perhaps (just food for thought here) it is a few things working here 1) the stress of the injury plus obviously not being able to sweat as you are usually used to with your typical cardio workouts and 2) the fact that you are introducing yourself to a new workout program and new weight increment, and 3) the additional recovery time needed as a result of this, has over a three week period caused you to retain more water.

Also it is possible that the fact that you stopped and went back to what you are familair with reduced some stress for you and so now you are more relaxed and losing the water.

Again, just some food for thought and not suggesting this is exactly what is happening to you but it could be a possibility. If it helps you to hear what happens to me at all, I can fluctuate 4 pounds day to day when I introduce my body to a new program and if it is during my cycle I can fluctuate up to 6 pounds within two days. Thank goodness its temporary and even if it isn't any fun while its happening, in the end I come out better for working through it.

Lot's of luck to you and keep us posted :) Have a nice vacation....go relax...ahhhh! Hawaii did me wonders :D

Thank you for your response, Cathe.

I have reconsidered. I think I will give it another chance and move ahead with STS once I return from vacation. After all, it's only 3 months...you can do ANYTHING for 3 months, right? :D

If I give up now I'll never know what kind of results I could have gotten and knowledge is power!;)

Quick question...for Cathe or anyone else who might read this....when I restart the program should I jump back into M1 W4 and then skip the recovery week since I am essentially taking one now or should I skip the final week of M1 and just move into M2??

Thanks again! :)

I haven't read past here on the thread so maybe someone mentioned this already, but if this was your rotation before STS, you were burning a LOT more calories as your weight lifting was basically AWT and you were doing cardio daily. So, you were getting significant calorie burn for 90 min. 6 days a week.

During STS, you don't burn a lot of calories during the workouts (except maybe on leg day). Plus, since you say you have no energy on your STS days, you probably aren't moving as much in general & therefore, burning fewer calories during the rest of your day. So, you're only burning calories for about 60 min, 3 -4 days per week AND you're moving less in general 3 days a week. I think that's why you were seeing some weight gain. :(

Hi Wendy!

I would restart from the beginning. You might also consider dropping back on the weight you are using in the first week before hitting your actual weight based on your 1RM tests. This might help you ease your body into the program a little more slowly and, hopefully, you won't experience such a rapid and large weight difference.

Have a wonderful vacation! Can't wait to hear how it's going when you start STS again! :D

I agree with Tricia. I would start back from the beginning. Not sure when you get back from vacation or when you plan to re-start but I am planning on doing the STS/ShockCardio rotation come August 1st if you (or anyone else) is up for a check-in. Enjoy your vacation.

I'll join in with you! I was planning to do the program again.:)

After thinking about it, I've decided to restart STS (from the beginning) in September.

Thanks for all of the advice/ideas!!!! Much appreciated!

PS-vacation was fun!:D
