I love STS but if you want to start out cheaper, I would buy gym style. When you are just starting out you might only use a 5,8 and 10lb dumbbells. You will get variation in your routine when you progress to heavier dumbbells. I used a step for a short while as bench. If you enjoy lifting though, a bench is so much more comfortable than the step. I went through the entire STS without a barbell-just use dumbbells. I also have 12, 15, 20 and 25lb dumbbells.
