shave or wax?

Ok, it's that time of year again... summer's upon us (though you wouldn't think so with the weather we've been having in NY). Anyway, I'm cringing thinking about shaving my bikini area... and I did just buy a new bikini... so I'm thinking about waxing. I have never had a wax before (had a friend who got a brazilian and said it was yikes!). Are you guys shaving, waxing, or (horrors) going au naturel????

> or (horrors) going au naturel????

OK, I hate to be the nerd who has to ask this, (and reveal myself as such) but is shaved/waxed bikini area standard these days? Year round or just summer? And you do mean the part that goes under the bikini, right? Not just top of the thighs... I would venture a guess that few of my 40ish stay at home homeschool mom friends are shaving/waxing there either, but are we the only ones?

I guess I should get up to date w/ this stuff. I might be dating again soon...

I have always shaved for fear of the bikini wax but I am going on a cruise in less than 2 weeks and now that you mentioned it I am considering working up my nerve and "going for it" for the cruise...YIKES!

LOL

Wax, wax, wax. The pain is temporary, it lasts a long time, and no razor burn and itching, which I always had a huge problem with.

I attempted to wax that area several years ago, the pain (I have a LOW pain threshold) was horrific! I have been waxing my underarms and lower legs for about 12 years now and there are now large patches of skin on the legs where hair has not grown for 4 or 5 years. I am going to Vegas tomorrow so I was dreading having to tackle the bikini issue, to shave or wax??? So, I had all the waxing supplies laid out, got some ice packs and iced the area to be waxed. It made a HUGE difference! Just some slight discomfort. I use the kind of wax that heats up in the pot and I was surprised that it even worked since I thought that the muslim strips would not adhere to the wax because the warm wax hardened quickly once it came into contact with the icy cold skin but it did work!

Legs and bikini, I wax. Underarms, shave.

Waxing gets much easier in a rather quick period of time. I'd never go for a Brazillian, though! I see no need to be completely hairless...

I have it professionally done. About once a month. I started in February. I used to take some Tylenol on my way over, and plan to scurry home to a big glass of wine! ;) Now it doesn't warrant either.

This is a big issue for me because my hair is very black, thick and coarse and my skin is fair. My biggest problem is that I CAN'T STAND to grow the hair on my thighs long enough for it to be waxed. I am a compulsive shaver, and to avoid shaving even for a day drives me crazy. So the hair is never long enough to be waxed. So I just wind up shaving. x(

Someday, I am determined to save up enough money to have my whole body lasered, but until then, I'm stuck with those unsightly red bumps that come from shaving and have no idea what to do about it. Maybe I should try Nair? My skin is so sensitive though, I'm afraid of burning it.

This is a never-ending problem for me.

I wax my bikini area myself, using one of those pre-waxed strip kits. The pain is no worse than stripping off a band-aid. It lasts for weeks. Shaving always left me with ingrown hairs.

Nancy...I have the very black coarse hair too. I also shave my legs about everyday! I do use cortisine cream on my legs after I shave to avoid the bumps there. Shaving the bikini area just gave me the red bumps, but Nair has changed over the years and as it never worked before, it does now. As I tried waxing my legs once...I won't do that again. So like Judy said find a happy waxed customer or give Nair a try (it didn't burn me)....:)

For red bumps and irritation from shaving and nair, I use Bikini Zone Medicated Creme. It is expensive compare to how much you get in the container, but it works well.

Thanks luv2tri! I just ordered some from drugstore.com...great prices..:)

I've attempted waxing. This is definitely NOT a do-it-yourself job for me! After ripping off the first strip of cloth...half way!...I didn't want to continue, so there I was with a cloth strip hanging off me with dried wax on. I think I finally cut it off!

But with waxing, don't you have to wait for it to grow a certain length before you have it waxed? So it would be nice and clean the first time you had it done, but then you'd have to wait until it grew back some to have it redone, and there would be some '5 o'clock shadow' effect, wouldn't there?

(FYI: it's "muslin")

I recently went to Hawaii and didn't want to worry about "strays", so I jumped all the way and got a Brazilian! It wasn't horrible, but I have a fairly high pain tolerance. The lady I go to is very professional and very experienced. I have liked the results so much that I'm going to keep going. No razor bumps, slow regrowth, etc. The funniest thing is that a friend of mine who went with me kept calling the wax job a "bavarian"!! We all got a good laugh at that!

Yes, Kathryn. That is why I can't deal with waxing. The ONLY way waxing can work is if you start with long hair. I can deal with the pain, but not with all that long hair growth. I'm amazed that anyone even thinks of waxing as a viable option at all. I assume that people who go for waxings have nothing more than blonde "peach fuzz". Oh, how I despise those people. x(

A question for Carole. I too have really thick dark hair and get really bad razor burn on my armpits and bikini line so much that I can't really wear a bathing suit or sleeveless shirts because it is so embarassing. Years ago I used Nair and it was a joke. Now that you said it actually works, I was wondering if there was a certain type of Nair that you use or just the original. I would really appreciate anything you have to say so that I can try it and maybe get to wear more tank tops and stuff and not have the embarassment or pain of those bumps and ingrowns. Thanks in advance.

Toni, I don't have the problem with armpits...I use the Nair with Baby oil...there are few differnt kinds...I am usually okay unless I do it right before a long run...then I get bumps...:)

I'm in the same boat as you, Nancy. I end up with the 5 o'clock shadow by the end of the day even. I can't imagine letting it have to grow out between waxings. Those people who have peach fuzz are evil ;-) :p !
