Self Tanning Help!

If anyone else out there has had this problem or knows how to avoid it, please let me know!

Whenever I use self-tanning lotions, such as Coppertone, after about 3 or 4 weeks the color starts to come off in patches, so I end up with these orangish blotches all over my skin. I don't usually exfoliate when I'm using the tanners, so I don't think that is the problem.
I really want to use these tanners, but it is pretty embarrassing having those nasty tan spots all over me.
Can anyone offer any advice??
How do the pros use the tanning lotions?
Thanks,
Cari

Hey Cari, Did you mean it last 3or4 WEEKS or DAYS?? Ive never seen one that last THAT long! I agree with Val, sunless.com is awesome. Ive had the best luck with Neutrogena foam and lotion. Its reasonably priced and you can find it in the drug store or walmart. I REALLY helps if you exfoliate prior to applying the product and re-apply every 3 days or so. Sunless.com also has a great forum where you can post your questions. Good luck. Judy

It lasted about 4 weeks with reapplication every other day or so. Doesn't exfoliating rub off some of the fake tan?
And thanks for the link; the sight was very helpful!
Oh, Neutrogena gives me a rash.

I've used sunless tanning stuff for years. I've used everything from the very cheap to the very expensive. The only time I've experienced the "patchy" problem is when I didn't exfoliate. Every one that I've used recommends exfoliating before applying. This gets rid of the dead skin cells & keeps your skin healthy. Try using one of those scrunchy things that used to come with liquid bath soaps. You can pick one up at a bath & body type store for just a few bucks.

Good luck!

Exfoliation! You lose the color by sloughing skin so it goes off quicker in some places than others. Try exfoliating a couple times a week and using a loofa type sponge between treatments. I mix equal parts honey and corn meal and take them into the shower with me. It's a trifle messy but your skin feels like a baby's behind when you're done and it prevents those patchy patches.

Hi, I used to have this problem too. Now, I started using those new lotions (about $10) with the 2 tubes (a lotion and tanner) in one. I think one's by Coppertone and the other by Bain de Soliel. I love them! I haven't had any problems with them. I also always shave first, then moisturize, then after a few minutes of drying, I apply them.

Good luck!

I have been using self-tanning lotions and am happy with the results. I've used the expensive kind and cheaper ones with the same results. My only problem is the chemical smell. Any suggestions?

Use them at bedtime so you can sleep throuh the yucky smell. Apply 30 minutes before you retire so it will be dry.

Really, you apply moisturizer first? I always thought that it might affect the absorption of the tanning lotion. But I do hate not being able to apply my Nivea skin firming lotion. That stuff is the best!

Hi..I use a brand not mentioned in any of the responses. It's Clarin's Self Tanning Milk. I don't exfoliate other than a nubby washrag in the shower. The Clarins does not wear off in patches (at least on me). When I decide to go "natural" the tan just gradually fades over a 5 day period.
