Sculpt first???

Cathlete
OK I've heard it a couple of different ways but I wanted to run it by everyone here.

Does it matter if I do sculpting first then cardio or should I do cardio then sculpting.

I noticed Cathe's new dvds coming up are designed to do cardio first. But in Barry's Bootcamp they do sculpting first.

I heard that if you do sculpting first you will get rid of the waste (lactic acid buid-up) by doing cardio directly after.

I hope someone knows something more about this, it's just plain bugging the heck out of me;(

Carrie

Lifting weights first uses up your available glycogen so then if you are going to do cardio afterwards your body will be immediately focused on fat burning since the glycogen supplies have already been depleted. This is why weights before cardio is very good if you want to drop bodyfat!:)

OK, I need to drop body fat first before building muscle, so if I lift weights first I'll drop body weight faster than if I did cardio first??? Is that right???

So when Cathe shows us her new 4 day split routine, she's focusing on building muscle, because she does the cardio routine first before the sculpting, and I should do just the opposite to drop the fat first. I think I'm just confusing myself more;(

Thanks for the replies:)

LOL, poor confused girl.:7

Do the weights first. This will help you drop bodyfat.

You would build muscle this way too but in order to do that you *usually* need to NOT be on a calorie restrictive diet and if you are looking to lose weight you are probably watching your calorie intake.

You CAN, however, gain lots of strength, endurance and get awesome definition while working on dropping body fat.

GOOD LUCK!:)

>Wendy,

I'm still a P/T "in training" but I'm gettin' there!;-)

The one thing about doing weights first that you want to be careful of is that it also makes you tired. You may not give your all to the cardio portions, or do the cardio with poor form. Be disciplined and careful. For those who are challenged more by cardio, sometimes they get both a better strength and cardio workout by doing cardio first.
Like all other fitness stuff, I think the best thing to do is periodize your workouts and mix things up. Do strength first for a while, then mix it up. Both methods of training are great, but you will adapt to either and the law of diminishing returns will eventually set in.
Ahhh, variety truly is the spice of life :)

Thanks to whoever started this thread. I always thought it was more beneficial to do cardio first. I tend to do cardio first anyway because i'm afraid if i do weights first i will be too tired to do cardio and then end up blowing it off.
how important is it to do weights before cardio to lose bodyfat? does it really make that much of a difference if you are trying to lose weight? i still need to lose around 25 pounds (I am 5'6 and weigh around 175) and have been stuck for a few months. i have been trying to mix things up. i have made some great gains in my upper body but my lower body still looks like huge dimply mush. yeah, i know. i paint a pretty picture. anyway, i also feel that a good cardio workout before i lift is a great warmup to the weights. thanks in advance to all who reply.

No one approach is definately going to work for everyone but it's definately worth a shot IMO. You may also want to cut back a bit on the amount of cardio you do if you do it more then 3x per week. That can also help to drop body fat believe it or not! It has worked for lots of folks around here! :)

Thanks for replying to me!!! I do do cardio more than three times per week and am scared to death to cut back!!!!! I will try that this coming week and let you know what happens. I am so stuck right now that I will try anything! Thanks again!!!!

ps: I forgot to ask - how long do you guys recommend my cardio sessions be? i try to do 45-60 minutes of cardio on mny straight cardio days and only 30-45 min on the days when i am weight training only because of time constraints. Thanks again for your advice!!!!

How many days per week do you weight train? You might want to start by just cutting out the cardio on those days and see what happens.
:) The other days you can do 60 mins of cardio per session if you want. I don't often go for 60 mins anymore because I've realized I don't need to but you have to play around with it. Again, different things work for different people. I usually stick with 30-45 mins of cardio and even do an occasional 20 min session!

I have been doing the GS workouts for almost 2 months but have been thinking about changing it to total upper body work 2x per week and Legs 2x per week, with straight cardio days in between. I try to workout 6 days in a row and then take off the 7th day. What do you think?

Then you would be doing cardio 2x per week if I am understanding what you are saying which is fine. You can do 2 60 min cardio sessions per week and concentrate on weights the rest of the time.

Awesome! Let me know how it goes for you! I hope it works!:)
Oh and a bit of advice so that you do not get discouraged if the scale doesn't move...TAKE PICTURES before you start and then take them again after a month! The pics do not lie and they will tell you what the scale does not! TRUST ME!!!!:+

Okay, I am going to start this tommorrow!!! (Today is my day off and boy do it need it!!!) I will let you know how it is going in a month or so. Thanks again!!!
